This is the episode that earned Owen Cooper his Emmy 👏🏾

For me this was saddest episode to watch. To see a kid that young groomed to adopt these unhealthy attitudes towards girls and relationships is just awful. In the small glimpses of vulnerability like when he talks about feeling ugly or being ostracised at school I just feel sorry for him, but then he spews all these warped perspectives on relationships or burst into a violent rage and you realise he’s absolutely in the right place.

Also the behaviour of the security guard was intentional. It was to show that even seemingly normal guys can cross boundaries and make women feel uncomfortable. He stares at her, invades her personal space multiple times, and tries to explain her own job to her as if she’s not the professional between the two of them.

I agree with Blake in that it’s weird having conversations about sexual stuff with kids that young but in the UK kids his age learn about it in school in a class called PSHE, and speaking as someone with a 14 yr old brother, trust and believe they’ve seen and heard way more than you think in the internet 💀

I like that they waited until episode 3 to show us this side of Jamie because in the first two episodes, we got other people's accounts of what happened. A couple of telling things about our society are how the guard was trying to tell Briony (The therapist) how to do her job. He also made a point to tell her that the other male therapist did a better job than she did. Also, Jamie spoke to her in ways he would never speak to a man. I personally don't understand how these questions that Jamie gets asked after killing a girl and displaying gendered aggression are that out of the ordinary? Even if Jamie wasn't a killer, a therapist or a doctor asking these questions is pretty normal. It's not like locker room talk. It's an adult with a degree and experience handling child psychology, asking questions. 13-year-olds care about how they're perceived and if people like them. This incel stuff is happening in real life and girls and women are being killed because of it. This is relative. Someone mentioned that secondary school in the UK covers roughly 11-16 year olds so I'm sure the energy is even more heightened.

Erin Doherty (the therapist Briony) also won an Emmy for this episode

yep! and well deserved too

I think Jamie's attitude and personality change (from 1st episode) could PARTIALLY be because of the time he spent locked up; 7 month inside can make a person go insane. His family sounded totally surprised by his crime. He got good grades in school. We didn't hear of any complaints from teachers about his behavior. Life behind bars is definitely affecting his mood. Blake keeps saying that Jamie is guilty because he was caught on camera in 4K. Remember, the detective said it was dark, and I think he said Jamie's face couldn't be seen. But even he felt the camera wasn't enough proof. He still feels there needs to be a motive, and he's not happy that they can't find the murder weapon. Even Luigi Mangione is still awaiting trial. For the record, I have no doubt Jamie did it. Who is telling Jamie that he is ugly? All the girls, other classmates, people on the internet he's never met? Incels were a thing as far back as 2014. Look up Elliot Rodger.

Did you mean Emmy? Aren't Academy awards for movies.

Halima

yes, thank you! my mind went blank thinking of the name of the award and I couldn’t be arsed to google it 😭🤦🏾‍♀️

I don’t think it was weird at all having this conversation with a 13 year old. This is reality, unfortunately. Jamie explained to Briony in detail how he victimized and planned to use another child because he knew she was at her weakest. That shows an understanding and it shows intent. That along with him saying that he didn’t touch her but he could have. “Most guys would have”. That’s all the context needed right there. Like Corey said, he has no respect for women. He thinks men are superior and he felt entitled to do whatever he wanted to Katie. There are so many male influencers who teach toxic masculinity and it’s scary. I think the whole point of this show is to bring awareness to that.

I’m 22 and I have both an 11 and 12 year-old sisters whom are in the seventh grade, although it doesn’t feel like I graduated that long ago our childhood couldn’t be any more different. Same as you Blake half the things spoken about in this episode I was totally unaware of at that age. when I was in the seventh grade I was busy worrying about catching the next episode of The fosters , scrapbooking, and making up dance routines with my cousins. Kids are exposed to so much more which only matures them faster. It’s easy to forget that not everyone runs their household the same way you do. My mother doesn’t believe in sleepovers or staying out past 8 o’clock if it’s not a school function, but my sisters know plenty of kids who wander around town well past 10pm. Some of the conversations these kids have you’d think they were between adults. What I think is most sad is that I genuinely don’t believe that they understand and grasp the gravity of their actions and the words that they say. When rape and sodomy becomes the butt of a joke or saying the N-word to get a couple laughs conversations needs to be had. Just for reference I live in a suburban town in PA so these kids are well off, good families, with good grades just like Jamie but unfortunately they consume really harmful content and think it’s ok.
