What a beauty, they donโ€™t call Lions the Kings of the beasts for nothing! Amazing art, the rendering is just splendid. Pspspspsps, kitty, kitty, kitty! :D

Eden Sanders

That scraggly mane is ABSOLUTELY divine! I'm really loving whatever new painting technique you're using on these large tufts of fur

DerpyDrake

oh man wow.. and i thought the dragon was good... this is crazy

Collinsbro45

That brushwork on the mane tho... Incredibly cool work here! The textures and brushes you've been playing with are so much fun to look at, and have been making some real bangers! It's a little touch, but the framing of his upper form by the cloud is such a cool thing!

THE KING!! Awesome work man. The bigger the pspsps, the bigger the cat you call, as they say. Taran, I see that you left the shadows relatively simple for this piece, which reads visually well overall. Where would visual information like texture generally be conveyed? An abundance of both light and shadow eat visual information, so I would guess halftones? You seem to selectively depict texture at the brightest of highlights, as well as the halftones. Your restraint--and, perhaps, your sense of artistic taste--are arguably your most underrated skills. ^^๐ŸคŸ

Will these be available as print on your print store? Would love to snag a few of em for my wall. XP

Lions are my favorite animal sooo....... OMFG HE IS HANDSOME! i LOVE HIM! ALL HAIL THE KING! AAAAAAAAAAA

Thanks Em! I think putting the textures in the halftone areas is a great general rule, but I think it also depends on the way youโ€™re lighting your piece and also what you want the main focus to be. For this piece specifically, I wanted the bright sun as the main light source, and any lighting in the shadows would be from either the ambient lighting from the sky, or the bounce light from the bright yellow grass. (Still minimal lighting for those though, since I wanted the shadows to contrast better). So in this case, because I want the areas exposed to the light to be tue focus, I added texture mostly in the midtones and also for the highlights. One good trick for REALLY making the textures pop though, is to add them right in the transition between light and shadows, by basically breaking up the shadowโ€™s โ€œsmoothโ€ edge and making it more rough. that way it gives the illusion of light catching a bunch of little forms which only accentuated those textures in the midtones and highlights. A great real life example you could look at is the moon: https://www.rmg.co.uk/sites/default/files/styles/full_width_1440/public/ROG_AMAT_Moon.jpg.webp?itok=BFH5dHOx If the textures were only in the brighter โ€œlitโ€ area, and not in the transition between light and shadow, the textures might still seem flat. So arguably, adding them in in that specific area is going to be the important if you want to convey a lot of texture ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Thanks Gruff! They will be eventually ๐Ÿ˜‚
