Hey guys! Happy Saturday!

So I've been thinking a lot about this Weretober, and what direction I'd like to go in for it in terms of style and mood. Ultimately I want to go in a direction that's "darker," much more like the pieces I did years ago, where proportions were sometimes somewhat skewed slightly, the colours were very muted (almost greyscale) and there was a lot more... ferocity in the creatures themselves (for the most part - I understand that there will be outliers 😂). I want lighting and contrast to play a bigger part in the composition and also want that "grit" and crispiness from the textures (which is why I've brought it back into my workflow lately and have been re-experimenting with them so much.)

I've gathered a number of pieces that I think would fit what I'd like to aim for (Funnily most of them are from 2021 😂) but I think the Werewolf piece from back in June and the more recent Skullberus are probably the closest thing that have come to that "sweet spot" of merging my current style with my earlier stuff. (Though I'd still maybe like it to be a bit more muted in terms of colour)

I love Halloween month. Spoopy season has probably been my favourite time of the year ever since I was a kid, and I'd like to bring some of those elements back for this year that I felt were maybe missing in previous years.

Ultimately I want this Weretober to ultimately be fun, not just for me, but for everyone else as well! 😊

So now that I've said my piece and expressed what I'd like to do, I really want to hear what you guys want to see! Do you guys like the sounds of the direction? Would you guys make any changes or additions? Do you have any questions at all?

***

On another note, I want to bring something up that may or may not be upsetting to some people. I've had a discussion some some friends about this as well but I'd still like to bring it up with you guys and see what you think.

I believe that it's safe to say that I'm not an art streamer, and I will never pretend to be one. With that said, I have tried to bring that element into patreon on multiple occasions (Mostly during Weretober) to try and "spice things up" and also make an opportunity for you guys to see me drawing live and also so that we can interact in a more direct manner. And I've tried to maintain that tradition despite it making a fairly exhausting challenge even more stressful (To the point where it has negatively impacted me physically in past years) because I felt like you guys might enjoy the streams.

I also want to be CLEAR that I'm not blaming anyone for this, and not trying to make it out like a "oh woe is me" sort of situation 😂 I'm fully responsible for it, and have just come to the realization that my body just might not be able to handle the extra stress of streaming (along with all the technical hiccups that seem to come with it during a month-long drawing challenge 😂) (cough cough... last year's 2 hour technical delay for the VERY first stream despite me having tested it several times days before 😂)

So... now the question is, would you guys be alright with me not streaming for this weretober? I know some of you seem to enjoy the streams, (Personally I feel that I'm pretty boring 😂) so I'm flattered if you actually do. But I'd like to know if it's a deal breaker for some of you, and the streams are super important.

That's all I have to say for now. Once again, I'd really like to get your guys's feedback if you have the chance, and I want to thank you all again for the incredible support and for taking the time to read this 💙

Hope you all have a great Weekend!

I THINK THE DIRECTION UR GOING FOR WITH THIS WERETOBER IS PERFECT AND ID PREFER U NOT STREAMING IF IT MEANS YOU WONT FEEL STRESSED AND CAN GO ALL OUT WITH YOUR PIECES 😭🤎 PLUS I HAVE THE TIMELAPSES I CAN WATCH AND U CAN ALWAYS GIVE ANY EXPLANATION ON THE IDEAS U HAD FOR THE PIECES IM THE DESCRIPTION SO IM GOOD AND IM SUPER EXCITED WOOOOOO

Illusorywilds

“I just think they’re neat” lol but seriously, I’m a big fan of the old stuff and the new stuff. The timelapses have always been super great for learning how to draw these types of things. So if timelapses are still on, then just my one opinion but streams won’t be missed by me for this challenge 😌

RemysArts

Taran, do what makes you feel good. I'm sure that those who like and admire you don't want to see you stressed or feeling bad. The best thing for you is not to do the streams. Preserve your mental and physical health because they are much more important.

Matt

If I know anything it’s that your instincts as an artist always seem to be right. So, a darker, grittier weretober sounds fun and look forward to seeing what you make. Your time is precious, although I love when artists show the process, I think you should prioritize what you need. Don’t want to make your favorite month too restrictive where you can’t enjoy it. I’m cool with you not streaming.

Murphyus

First of all, you take care of you. If streaming comes at your detriment, then it does us no good because it does you no good. We're here to support you, and I think that should guide us and our expectations. But to get to the start of your post, I personally have a soft spot for tf's/were's where the body is more distorted and hedging away from human. I'd be thrilled if you allowed yourself space to push some limits this Weretober and see where the spooky takes you.

zankies87

I think thats a great plan bud! Id say keep most pieces dark themed but one or two could be "lighter" (like a goodball werewolf or a were creature getting stunned by a flashlight) to bring variety for yourself or just the theming in general. Bht otherwise dark themeing would be awesome! If pieces are like the skullberus, its already perfect hehe. Id also say keep backgrounds simple. For streaming, id rather you not have such a stressful time with weretober. It really ate away at you last time and only a few people showed up consistently. Plus you post your time-lapse constantly which others can use like a livestream.

Fang

I’m a big fan of your older work too, so it’s great to see you implementing it recently and for weretober!! And please look after yourself and your health, the artwork you give to the community is more than enough 🙌✨

tfiddlerart

I appreciate it bud! Also… This gave me an idea 😂

The Timelapses are a must, and will definitely be present 😂👍

Five raccoons in a trench coat

I love the theme! I feel like the second image alludes to a more expansive story/lore, and I really like the pieces that give a glimpse into the personality or characterization of the subject. I'd love to see more! I think the gritty/dark theme gives a lot of opportunities for dynamic pieces or interactions between subjects. Would love to see how your characters react to these settings! For the livestream, totally fine for me if you skip. Self care is important and I'd prefer you focus on art you enjoy than fret over setting up streams. Love your work! Very excited for spooky season! 🎃

T James

What about incorporating some mechanical elements into character design. Im not sure if you have ever done anything like that before and it might clash with the weretober theme. But I think it would be awesome to see something like steam punk prosthetic limbs, they could have interesting light sources and cool steam effects. It would also be a good excuse to add even more texture contrast with the metal contrasting with fur. As for streaming, if you feel like you dont want to live stream during weretober then dont it 🙏. Burn out is real, you already work so hard i cant imagine how you mange it. Take care of yourself before you take care of us, prioritise your health and sanity over everything 🫶

tfiddlerart

Well… not always… (damn minionkini)😂 I appreciate it though Matt. I’ll definitely still be sharing the timelapses, so there would be that at least 🙏

Pspspsps

I would definitely love the darker, eerie approach for this Weretober! It should be interesting and perfect for the season xD I wouldn’t mind not having streams this year. I’m actually not a big fan of watching any sort of stream, i get bored easily, I don’t like setting around for hours waiting for something interesting to happen lol but I did enjoy your streams, it was nice to hear you talk about art stuff and other stuff. Also don’t call yourself boring or I will.. Smack you ]:<

tfiddlerart

I appreciate it Raz 😂 And fiiiine, I won’t say I’m boring…. … I’ll just think it 😌

T James

I did not mean to say " then do it" with regard to streaming, was meant to say "dont" 😅🙈

Elysianaut

The direction sounds great and honestly whatever is easiest for you. Streaming is a big commitment and it'd be more than understandable to not go through with it this year.

Ozzan

In terms of direction for theme it ultimately comes down to what you feel like doing in the end. I do find the inspiration to revisit your earlier approach to the challenge a great way to compare more directly how you’ve evolved as an artist. The darker and exaggerated approach sounds pretty neat regardless! In terms of streaming, well this is my first year supporting you so I don’t know how previous years went. If I were to suggest a compromise, it’s that you stream only once a week (during the weekend). Since I work full-time I’d only be able to make it on like a Friday or Saturday if you do it. Either way, from what I gather, you’ve stopped streaming and switched to providing timelapse videos instead, which works perfectly fine for me. Like others have mentioned already, do what you think best since the point is to have fun anyways :)

Pspspsps

Yo welcome Taran! xD And No! Don't even think of that thought ]:< 🩴 Cuz your awesome x3

tfiddlerart

All good 😆 I’ve have my fair share of typos 😂

Benji

I'm just thrilled to see your art, man. Every time. I am more than content with seeing replays/timelapses to see you work your magic. Also the themes seem awesome, I'd love to see some really gothic wolf peoples :)

Sinibun

I have been loving the more textural and expressive stuff recently. Beyond hyped for weretober this year! I humbly request a scary hyena/gnoll for the list if you're not tired of them.

heyokjc

I’d definitely be down for that to be the direction you take for this year’s Weretober pieces! Those “darker” and more gritty portrayals of the were-creatures were always really cool to see, and it’s been great having those sensibilities coming back in a few of your most recent illustrations! And no need to even ask about foregoing the streams, we can make do without them. Your health comes first and foremost! We don’t want you doing anything that will impact you in a negative way!

jonny

I love the spooky direction! Go for it, good way to mix things up. I don't think you should stream if you don't enjoy it. Even just streaming art on discord to my friends influences how I draw, it can really mess with the way I work, it really is something you have to be comfortable with

Collinsbro45

I am always down for whichever direction you take your weretober pieces, so a darker, more moody focus is well appreciated! As for not having streams, while I do like them, I much more prefer that you are happy and not doing something you've found is not what you enjoy and is detrimental to your well-being. If you chose to do one or two, it will be appreciated, but no worries if you don't want to!

nadie777

I second what most have said. First of all, just for yourself, please don't push you to so streaming if that impacts your health and/or mood negatively, or you just feel it's not your thing. Furthermore, your mood and your love for what you do reflects in your art, I think, and so I believe that, even if we didn't care for your own wellbeing (which I think is not the case for many of us), we would still be interested in you dropping the streams to redirect that effort into your pieces. Plus, you already said that the timelapses will be there, so double reason (triple with the previous one) to not force yourself to do that. Also, I like the aesthetics of your latest pieces, and from the older pieces, so yay for reviving and "updating" the vibes! Someone already mentioned it, and it sort of may go along with the "with some exceptions" thing you said (just sort of), but maybe some goofy-spooky piece in between darker ones would be cool 👀

rcmaniac25

I personally only look at the wips and final pics, so a livestream isn't needed. As for the darker mood: do it. My mind sees a bunch of dark mood pics, and then one "happy goth"

The Biomes! Mod Team

I am fully on board with all of this! You're the artist and I trust your judgement. Plus this might result in more cool as hell prints I can get one day :D

jstar27

It's a shame the live streams never happened when I was available, but I do see you post the occasional time lapse. It's totally cool if streaming isn't your thing. It definitely isn't for everyone. I'd prefer if you do things that make you comfortable. Hope you get to take plenty of stretch breaks, water, and rest to make sure you don't dehydrate or make your wrists unhappy. I look forward to Weretober every year and this year is no exception. Happy drawing, Taran! ^^

Budge

No issues here whatsoever, your stylistic choices are always great and adding the stress of live-streaming to your process isn’t necessary. I think this is gonna be a wonderful weretober 💚

Em :)

Weretober. Make it DARK. BROODING. SINISTER. I want blood!!! Life comes first, man. Your body is what’s keeping you here, take care of it. Always. Trust your gut. It tells you important things like “livestreams have become more trouble than they’re worth” and “I wanna try that sushi place again”

Rodrigo

Yes, definitely go back to doing more muted black and white pieces if that is what you feel is appropriate for Weretober. There are 11 more months where you can do more colorful pieces and your body and mind might do well with that change. On that note *of course* don't stream for Weretober if really tires you out. I'll be honest and say I always had trouble watching since they were always held when I worked so I won't miss them necessarily as much as others. Do what feels good and healthy for you and prevent burnout.

Nicolò Piccinini

I think some of it may be in part due to the fact that you tend to always "show everything". Perhaps it would benefit if you went bolder with the lighting (or lack thereof) and left some areas in pitch darkness. For example, Skullberus would imho be way spoopier if the main lighting came from the cinders at the bottom of the image and looked like he was walking out of the dark with the implication of flames licking somewhere nearby, the main forms revealed by splashes of bright red/orange light (bonus points if the fire is of an "unnatural" color) You also wouldn't have much room to go overboard with showing local colors. The 2000W white led panel pointed at it just kinda dampens the spoopy factor a bit, you know 😂 I know it serves the dual purpose of being both a comfortable lighting for you to draw and letting you render all the anatomical volumes for us to admire, but it's kind of a catch 22. Then again, depends on how willing you are to dare, cause it's still going to be challenging regardless.

Koetti

Lighting and more contrast? I'm down for more daring and darker shadows. You could make some real cool stuff, like with some rim light bouncing off the shapes, maybe even give shadows a bit of an edge

Pascal

I would wish to see some more of your recent workflow , I can study more how Taran work during this month

Eden Sanders

Yeah, it's okay if you don't stream. We just LOVE seeing the art! (Maybe if you stream, it should be of you doing something that doesn't require attention, like petting a cat or eating a bowl of cereal)

Eden Sanders

And I'm STOKED for the darker tone of weretober this year!! We are super excited

Shoop

The direction for Weretober sounds amazing. I don't feel too strongly about the streams, sounds like the work might be better if you skipped streaming

SolTyMcMalty

Dark Taran era is gonna be great, but I do wonder... What if scary version plus friendly version? Sounds like something you'd be able to play around with, but whatever you decide for yourself, I trust.

ReisHusky

Hey Taran, I just saw this! I’m completely on board with the direction you want to take, and I’ve really been enjoying your newer style lately. Please take care of your neck and back, and don’t push yourself too hard 😂 The streams definitely aren’t a must. I think people mostly just enjoy getting to hang out and interact with you. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to this year’s Weretober! My one tiny request would be more gryphons and dragons. moos and werewolves are always very welcome too xD

LlKkO

I liked to catch up and hang with you on streams :> but you don't take enough breaks to rest so i think that's a good idea 😌 and if u call urself boring im gonna punch cypress 🐊👊🐮
