This month's Live Lesson: "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure

At the beginning of class, we'll review last month's lesson on "Losing My Religion." Music is attached to this post.  Please post a homework link if you've had a chance to work on the tune!

This month, I'm excited to revisit "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure, a song that you'll find on my album Ukulele Days, check out my version here. This arrangement is a great introduction to the concept of chord melody, and we can explore how to incorporate that chord melody with both strumming and fingerpicking.

While my version is all picking, I think this is a fun song to strum. If you've done a deep-dive on Patreon, then you know that I have taught "Just Like Heaven" to my San Francisco class back in 2016, and Patrons have access to that lesson here.  You can also strum along with the class here.

We'll work in layers of learning the strumming, then chord melody, then picking, and then picking with chord melody. There's a fancier part not covered in this chord melody that I'll challenge the intermediate-level folks to tab out for themselves. Transcribing parts is an important lesson in learning how to create chord melody. We'll cover that next week in our intermediate session.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

Hi Cynthia! Here is my effort at learning LOSING MY RELIGION. This is a very challenging song for me! I love this song and am determined to play it well. I recorded two videos of my effort: The 2:38 min video is me trying to stay in tempo with the metronome. OMG! I play like I’m deaf to the MN! I found playing the chucking island strum to the MN was super difficult. Please tell me how I did with that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf8kFI7IzaI The 4:33 min video is of me attempting to play at a tempo that FEELS like the’ official’ tempo. If you have time to evaluate only a tiny portion of this one, I would be most appreciative! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt5aD8qXp4E Thank you so much, Cynthia!

Cynthia, glad to see you are re-visiting this one. Since you helped me get started years ago (and I learned to play this song from you)...I thought you'd get a kick out of this first-time, impromptu jam I did with some friends of mine in their studio. Listen for the cool swing version at the end. Cheers! https://youtu.be/DXN4h9y_SIk?si=BiL58WIf9WGtq3e3

Elaine Panke

Hi, I am looking for Cynthia Lin

Elaine Panke

Oh, if I could type.. sorry, I am looking for Cythia Lin's lesson on muting. The spreadsheet doesn't specify "muting" lesson, just the song titles. Thanks

Jenny Selig

She doesn't have one particular lesson on muting, but many. A classic older one would be "Fly me To the Moon" or "dream a little Dream of Me" -- but hopefully folks will chime in with other ideas. You can ask in the chat or FB group as well, if you like.
