Aloha, Patrons!

I'll see you Thursday, September 19th at 2:30pm Hawaii Time / 5:30pm Pacific Time for our monthly Live Lesson.  If you click on the video above, you’ll see a countdown for your time zone. (Find all Patron events on our Patron Google calendar).

If you can't join in live, the recording will be available to replay on YouTube at your convenience. Instructions for joining via YouTube are below.

This month's Live Lesson:  "Stuck in the Middle With You"

At the beginning of class, we'll review last month's lesson, "Respect" (Aretha Franklin). Music is attached to this post.  Please post a homework link if you've had a chance to work on the tune!

I remember "Stuck in the Middle With You" from the great "Reservoir Dogs" soundtrack, here's the original audio reference if you want to refresh yourself. I'm teaching it in the same key as the original, so you can play along with the original track.

This song is undeniably catchy. We'll work the rhythm of the chucking strum, and add some flair with the slide move (which you won't be able to stop doing once you learn it!). Hope to see some videos of you all trying this tune, and this song would be great for a collab video with uke friends!

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

How to Watch Live

1. Click on this direct link to the lesson: https://youtube.com/live/MswZigtBJVA?feature=share

For those who are new, please note this is a private link, intended for Patrons only.

2. Log in to YouTube to join the live chat, and please say hello!  I can't see that you're watching unless you chat.  If you have trouble using chat on a mobile device/ tablet, you may want to try on a desktop or laptop browser.

3. Feel free to post your questions to me, or to the community.

How to Watch Later

1. Watch the video linked above (it's the same as the live link).

2. Feel free to post your comments and questions below.

Konstanze

Dear Cynthia, first of all let me say that I appreciate all you're doing for us Patrons. It's so much fun and I couldn't imagine my life without uke anymore, and that's largely thanks to you :-). May I just make a little remark: For quite some time now I've been having the feeling that the songs you teach in the live lessons get easier and easier, compared to most of the songs (same tier!!) from 2022, 2023.... There are no new (i.e. interesting or ambitious) chords, no new strum patterns, no new riffs to learn. For quite some time now I can play all the songs by sight-reading, and while I do realize that you have to commit to all skill levels, I must say that the songs you chose in my tier a year or two back used to be much more intricate and interesting. I do remember "Don't look back in anger" with these three riffs that back then I REALLY had to practice, or "Girl from Ipanema" with a lot of new fancy jazzy chords AND a bossa nova strumming pattern 😍. Also "Hotel California" with a lot of different techniques and this great instrumental outro. Or "Just the two of us" - so many interesting and more sophisticated chords, great funky strumming. I play these songs all the time and really do miss that kind of stuff in the songs you've lately been choosing for the live lessons. Any chance you might return to this skill level, at least from time to time?? (you could always additionally provide easier chords/variations for beginners... and did so in the past)... Would be highly appreciated and helpful for making progress! :-) Thank you for considering it and all the best for your Europe trip 😊.

Greetings! How can I find the download for Stuck in the Middle with You? Love this one so much!

Thank you Jenny! Sometimes I'm able to see the pdf links and sometimes I'm not. When you sent the link, I was able to see the pdfs, but previously they were not there for me. It happens sporadically like that. I have a feeling it has something to do with me clicking a link from my email account, but I haven't figured it out yet.

hi Konstanze! thanks for your feedback, hopefully the new lesson for October gives you a little something more to work on.
