{Patron-only post}

aloha Patrons!

thanks for your votes - i'm excited to teach Leaving on a Jet Plane this month.  did you know that the Peter, Paul, and Mary version hit #1 on the Billboard charts?

i'm sharing the John Denver and Mama Cass version above because I love their harmonies, and also I'm planning to teach it in the same key as above (key of G).

i'm considering now how i want to arrange it - in the Live Lesson, i'll start with a strum-only version that's more beginner-friendly, and for an intermediate version, i am thinking that i will add some fingerpicking too.

MONTHLY CALENDAR - I'll start posting this every month, in our monthly vote post.  the details for each event will come in a separate post.

i'll share a chord chart by Thursday, in time for our Live Lesson.

  • LIVE LESSON is Thurs 9/14 at 4:30pm PDT for $5+ Patrons

for those who are new, every month I teach the vote-winning song in a Live Lesson for $5+ Patrons as practice for creating the tutorial.  i post a private video link, and you can log in and chat during the Live Lesson.  if you miss the Live Lesson, you can always watch the recording later.  click here to find all previous Live Lesson posts.

  • BEGINNER LIVE JAM is a special live broadcast of my NYC Ukulele Workshop on Thurs 9/21 from 3:30-5:30pm PDT for the $10+ Patrons

in my NYC Ukulele Workshop, we'll start with a Beginner-friendly strum clinic, and then jam on songs from my Beginner Songbook.  i'm excited to be with some NYC Patrons in real life for the livestream!

  • INTERMEDIATE LIVE JAM is Thurs 9/28 at 4:30pm PDT for the $20+ Patrons

in the Intermediate Live Jam, i invite the $20+ Patrons to join me online for an Intermediate lesson and jamming through Intermediate-level songs.  what do you all want to work on this month?  click here to find all previous Intermediate Jam posts.

thanks as always for supporting what i do.  hope you can join me Thursday for the Live Lesson, and Saturday for the 1K Patron Concert!

xo cynthia.

ps i am hustling to get the Here, There, & Everywhere tutorial done before I leave for NYC - it's gonna be a long one! :)

Sugar .

In the intermediate jam, could we cover transitioning up and down the neck? As in how you "jump" from playing a C chord up the neck to the A chord on the 9th (I think it is). I always feel like the ukulele is going to slip away from me! Thanks :-)

Phylicia

I thought last month's tutorial was announced to be What a Wonderful World? Did I get confused somewhere along the way?

Renée Forsythe

I love this video! I was 11 years old again....brought me right back to my bell bottoms and wide collars. (and a feeling of hope that seems to be missing from our country these days; which is why I PLAY the ukulele, but I digress...;-) )

Cynthia Lin

i'm going to do both - ill do here there everywhere this week, and what a wonderful world the last week of the month

Jon F

Hi Cynthia, any ETA for Stairway Part 2? Please?

Darlene Sullivan

So although I am pleased about this...for the third time now, where is the finished version of Stairway to Heaven? I would really prefer to have tutorials that, are finished, rather than unfinished ones. Should we just forget about Stairway?

Darlene Sullivan

Sadly, perhaps you are just too busy for us Cynthia?

Cynthia Lin

i am busy no doubt. trying to balance creating material that's good for beginners, promoting my new album, and developing my teaching series. it's on my radar to teach stairway, but there are a lot more people who will benefit from a Leaving on a Jet Plane tutorial, so for now it takes precedence. that's my logic, to help as many people grow as i can, hope you can understand! ps - if you post a video of yourself playing Part 1 of Stairway, that will help sway me :)

Heidi

Thanks for the time machine back to the early 70's! Great video clip. I'm looking forward to some fingerpicking for Leaving on a Jet Plane :)

Jon F

Hi Cynthia, I read your reply to Darlene below, but we already voted Stairway as the winner in July... I don't mind that you're breaking it into manageable pieces, but my wife is getting tired of hearing me practice Part 1 over and over (and over) and then "wing it" for Parts 2&3... Also I specifically upgraded to the next level so I could watch the live lesson, which is extremely useful, but frankly I'm not good enough to be able to do Part 2 (or beyond) without your examples of playing each section first. I'm not sure you realize how much the world needs your lesson of this epic song. If you play & sing it (even as a #100Song which will then supplement the live lesson) I have no doubt your audience/exposure will expand. You have many excellent beginner tutorials, and I've learned almost everything I know from them (you're the best!) But I ***never*** thought I'd be good enough to learn/play Stairway to Heaven and it's actually happening because of you. I've practiced it almost every single day since your live lesson and I've reached a wall without your next lesson. Please... there are others who feel the same way... One last thing, a condensed version of the song (did you see Heart's awesome version in the tribute at Kennedy Center?) is good, perhaps even preferable. Thanks for listening. :-)

Where can I find the chord chart & lyrics for Leaving on a Jet Plane for this month's tutorial? Thank you!

Shawn Charlene Garner

Just a friendly reminder, you can always purchase ukulele instruction books, other uke sites and/or take private lessons. Cynthia is only one person and patron fees are very reasonable. Just saying.

Jenny Selig

I'm with Shawn, and would like to add that, philosophically, I like the idea of the artist on Patreon (in this case Cynthia) retaining personal agency in creating her art. She's chosen to provide a valuable service to us at very low cost, but I see that as a bonus to my support. There's also a semantic argument here, based on the idea of "patronage" of the arts. I am supporting her as a patron, but I am not her boss, and I think there is an important difference. I like providing input but want Cynthia to retain creative control over her product. I also see it as a student-teacher relationship. When taking a class, whether it's free or I've paid for it, I can give a teacher feedback (and I very much appreciate that this teacher polls us to see what we are most interested in), but I wouldn't expect a teacher to change her syllabus or course necessarily, even if that was what most of her students "voted" for. Maybe it's because I worked retail, but I know "the customer does NOT always know best." :) I'm trusting Cynthia's expertise and direction. How the poll works is evolving, so it's surely an ongoing conversation, but I think Cynthia has been very transparent and open to discussing her goals of balancing the community's desires with what she can accomplish, and with her own teaching style we love! One other analogy I've made for myself comes from my participation in CSA (community supported agriculture programs). Sometimes I get more cabbage than I want. Sometimes the corn crop has worms, and I don't get any. But that's the risk I take when I choose to pay to support the small farmer. ;) Next month (or week or whatever), maybe I'll get an amazing bag of apples that will rock my world. It's a risk, the Patreon relationship, and totally optional. <3

Cynthia Lin

hi Jon! thank you - i appreciate your heartfelt plea. :) i think putting it up to a vote is the fairest way to see if spending my time on the tutorial makes sense, especially when there are other tutorials/songs i'm more interested in doing. i understand your urgency, but like i always say - when it comes to learning, it's important to be patient with yourself. keep working at it, breaking it down. mastering other tutorials will also help get you past the wall. posting a video of yourself playing Part 1 will help sway me! :) (you can post in the forum or in our facebook group!)

Jon F

Hi Cynthia, thanks for listening & replying. It's funny because a few months ago I wrote a comment telling you that I'm a Patron because what you're doing is great, and I want to support you in whatever it is you believe, and to not get stretched too thin. But I want you to do what *I* want... LOL. I totally accept your view when you say there are other tutorials you're more interested in doing. Music is personal, and STH (or any song) shouldn't be done without "feelin it". I can't help it if you didn't go to HS in the 70's to understand this song's impact :-) I'm enjoying every tutorial you're making, keep doin' what you're doin'. Meanwhile, I'll hope something will happen to inspire you for STH, so when that happens you will really rock out and I'll be able to see that in your lesson/performance! With regards to me posting a video of myself... sorry, that's a terrifying thought, I'm WAY too introverted. Thanks, keep playing!

Cynthia Lin

hi Jon! yes, i've been turning this over, and realizing that i'm not ready yet to teach this tutorial, otherwise i'd probably have done it already - it's not part of my musical make-up, like you said. i'd need to spend a lot of time with the song to dig into it, and i look forward to finding that time! a Patron vote would justify spending that time. i do see it happening down the road. :) thank you for your support and thoughtful messages!

Darlene Sullivan

To Shawn and Jenny... I appreciate both your comments. I too have worked retail for many years, so I do understand the 'customer' experience. And I must disagree, as any profitable business will attest, the customer does in fact know best since it is their buck. If there is an issue with perspective, a continuous and gentle shift in attitude is the only beneficial and financially viable answer. I have also been a PR professional for an uber number of years and have worked with and for many international conglomerates. And the basic universal rule of business is...if you are not prepared to follow through, don't advertise. I didn't set up the monthly voting, nor the rules for choosing. So when a song is voted for and then discarded for something completely out of left field for whatever reason, those following the process are naturally disconcerted. I am disappointed that Cynthia has chosen not to follow through on Stairway...particularly since it is an excellent song for the UKE. AND particularly since her version was especially inspiring. I am aware that there are countless other renditions, songbooks and teachers...I happen to like Cynthia. So that's it for me...as my great grandmother used to say to me...and you will like this Jenny...'I don't chew my cabbages twice'! LOL

Renée Forsythe

Aloha, Not only did Cythia’s Patreon tutorial give the tab for all of Stairway to Heaven, she went over the entire song in her lesson. If you change the video speed and review all the difficult sections, (as we have been taught) there is no reason you can’t master this timeless ballad. Cynthia even posted a link to the original song, you can play right along with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Be empowered in your learning and the spirit of ukulele!

Joan Stucker

I changed my subscription last month from beginner to intermediate and did not get an email about how to link in on Sept. 28 at 4:30 p.m. can you help? Joan Stucker, Palm Desert, ca.
