Aloha lovely Patrons!

Welcome to a new year of ukulele, and a warm welcome to all the new Patrons!  If you are a new Patron, please introduce yourself in the comments below.  Feel free to share how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have an uke club to play with, what songs you've been working on.  And if you've been a Patron for a while and want to share, please go ahead.  This is a good place for your questions too - fellow Patrons, feel free to help me answer any newbie questions.

Thanks to all of you for directly supporting my work and for creating a powerful and positive online ukulele community.

A note for newbies - I know Patreon can be a bit hard to navigate.  Please be patient and explore, and see the Community Notes at the bottom of this post for more info on joining our communities, especially our secret Facebook group which is the best place to get help.  I also recommend downloading our Patron App!  Details below.

First, an announcement...

All 2018 Live Lessons are now available to ALL Patrons

All Patrons now have access to all the remaining 2018 Live Lessons!  And going forward, each month's Live Lesson will be available for $5+ Patrons for the first month, and then will be made available for all Patrons the beginning of the following month.  Given the demands of touring and my desire for higher production Play-Alongs, I've realized that I need more time to release the Play-Alongs on my own schedule, and I'd rather the Patrons enjoy the Lessons sooner than later.  Have fun with these new lessons!  (Maybe a good time to review them if you've already played them!)

All other Live Lessons are already available to all Patrons or have public tutorials on YouTube.
Here's a handy YouTube playlist of all recent Live Lessons and all Patreon Live Lesson posts.

Please do tune in for Live events when you can - it's fun to spend time with you all online, and helpful to me to have your feedback!

Hi all, new Patron here. I am brand new to ukulele and sort of accidentally found it because my 5-yo son got a uke for Christmas and I started playing with it after he went to bed and now I’m already a convert! Cynthia, I love your YouTube tutorials that make things so easy to follow. My husband can’t believe that I can already play Let It Go and Stairway to Heaven. Anyway I need to buy my own uke so I can return my son’s Christmas gift to him, but I’m feeling rather overwhelmed with the breadth of choices out there. Wondering what brands are everyone else’s favorites? I think I have already determined that I need a concert size bc my son’s soprano uke is uncomfortably small for me. Anyway, looking forward to learning more!

Happy New Year!!! New Patron from Tampa, FL. I have a tenor, TK20-CE. I see myself as a beginner as I hang out monthly with a group of musicians who have much more experience than me, but it's still fun to jam even if I don't know it all yet. I also started a Ukulele Club at my school and am up to 15 7th/8th graders in our club. I stumbled upon Cynthia Lin doing Christmas tunes on YouTube, so with your guidance via video, we learned Feliz Navidad smooth enough to go "caroling" around the school during our December club day meeting. My club kids are excited about learning ukulele, so I thought I better jump in and educate myself, so I'm in the know when they ask questions or come to me with song requests they want to do. Looking forward to learning lots and having fun along the way!!!

Made the Seattle picture! Great Holiday Jam, 2 years running. I’m sure Portland has a venue for next year, but I’d make the drive again, it was fun!

Carol Byrne

Wooohoo .. made the Seattle photo. My FIRST jam... an not my last. It was so much fun. Also met some great people and we are getting together soon to just JAM! See you next time you are in Seattle!

Hi Cynthia, Cheers from downunder - When strumming a 'beat' with one light strum and one heavier do you touch all strings on each strum? The first one with a lighter strum and the second heavier? Thanks.

Hi there! I've been learning ukulele since Jan 2018 and have a Cordoba Concert ukulele. It has a beautiful tone and projects sound really well. I joined a uke group here in the UK Midlands called Market Harborough Ukulele Group, MHUGS (I love that cuddly name) for short. I'm the youngest in the group most weeks (47) so I'm learning lots of classic songs and drinking cups of tea along with slices of cake with some very experienced players and also some who how found the love of ukulele later in life. We have a guy with a mandolin, someone made their own double bass and even homemade ukuleles in the group. I did my first solo of "Kiss the Girl" just before Christmas and "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" as a collaboration. I found Cynthia's tutorials in my first week (lucky me) and have been strumming along to her cheerful videos 4-5 times a week. So I thought I'd get more involved and invest in more tutorials by becoming a Patron - she's given me so much already that it's time to give back. I'm in with both feet and hoping to attend her tours, live jams and be an energetic part of the community. See you around Cynthia and Patrons. Peace <3

Cynthia, I became a Patreon about 10 months ago, but have finally figured out all the ins and outs. I’ve been playing for about 18 months having first discovered you on YouTube when I was laid up at home. The Uke saved my sanity and has become a great joy. I own too many for my ability, but fell in love with them. Low G Koahola Tenor and a concert Koahola, those are my most played, but also have a Kala 8 string and Ohana Tenor. I never had much musical ability, so love that I can play at all. I’ve got a handful of chords and strums down and am now working on finger picking and more stretch and dexterity for harder chord shapes. I wouldn’t be playing at all but for you, so you have my immense gratitude. Happy New Year!

Hi! I just joined Patreon as my Christmas present this year (thanks, husband!), and thanks to encouragement from my sister-in-law, Polly, who is also a CL Patreon. I've been playing for about a year and know I wouldn't have had so much success and fun without Cynthia's easy-to-follow tutorials and music arrangements. I'm getting super into finger picking after spending the first year basically just doing chord strumming. My whole family is amazed with how pretty a ukulele can sound and my 6 year old just brought his own money to the local music store to buy a red Waterman uke that he really, really, really had to have. I play an Ohana concert size. Looking forward to all the jams and tutorials! Thanks for sharing your gift, Cynthia!

Cynthia Lin

welcome Anna! i think a lot of parents got into uke unexpectedly because of their kids! i have a concert size signature ukulele that i highly recommend :) and if you post on the facebook group or forum about the price range and potential brands you’re thinking about, i’m sure you’ll get a lot of feedback. happy uke buying!

Cynthia Lin

welcome Donna! are you a teacher? i’d love to hear more about what your club kids want to learn, so i can create more relevant materials for them if i can.

Cynthia Lin

happy you made it! and i think Portland show could happen next year, maybe you’ll hit 2 shows?!?!

Cynthia Lin

yay! so great to hear - a big reason i wanted to tour last year is because i saw real-life communities forming as a result of these uke jams and events. i love Seattle and will def be back before long!

Cynthia Lin

aloha wavell! i tell people to strum all the strings but with a lighter touch, which actually takes more control (like whispering vs shouting). developing control with articulation is more important than the specific strings you touch. hope that helps!

Cynthia Lin

welcome Tori! there are some other UK Patrons who have gotten together and attended local uke fests and events, perhaps you can connect with them in our fb group. enjoy your tea and cake!

Cynthia Lin

thanks Sandee! it is easy to collect ukuleles. my answer when people ask me how many i have is “too many”!

Delinda Zinsmeister aka flyingdiva

Hello! I just joined Patreon and am very excited to be a part of this community. I bought my first uke about 6 months ago. It is the Cynthia Lin Signature uke & I love it. Cynthia’s YouTube tutorials made it so easy to get started. For Christmas my husband bought me a beautiful Kala Tenor Acoustic/Electric & I am enjoying that as well. I also have a soprano uke that I travel with. I usually try to tune in to the Wednesday 5 @ 5 on Instagram as Flyingdiva1. I have no music background whatsoever. Neither does anyone in my family, but since I started learning ukulele my father, sister & niece have all followed suit and gotten ukes & started learning also! This has been fun, because we all have mostly different interests otherwise and this has brought us together more. I also want to say Thank You Cynthia for your very generous spirit & sharing the Uke! People like me might not have started this without you and what you do😊.

Edwina Bonnet

I am new here, I'm French and I have been playing the ukulele for 7 or 8 months now and I love it! I have a concert ukulele. I am currently learning Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride and Can't Help Falling in Love. Thank you Cynthia Lin for sharing ukulele lessons!

Cynthia Lin

yay flying diva! thanks for joining us here, and always great to see you in he 5@5. and so cool that your family now has a group activity. i’ve found that music has a powerful way of uniting people, strangers and family alike :)

Happy new Year! from Gouda in The Netherlands. I got the UkeFever on a holiday weekend with our neighborhood last October. Some neighbor brought 25 ukes with him and introduced all of us with the Uke while sitting in a cycle with a bonfire. I'm a software engineer and in my free time I was always working, coding and researching new technologies. So my daily work was also my hobby, that is changed now because my neighbor and your tutorials! Its so much more fun making music and practice with others. Every 4 weeks I meet with 8 other neighbors (kids and adults) to share our experiences, music we found and we jam the old and new stuff we have learned, which is great fun! I first bough a Ortega Bonfire Series RU5MM concert ukulele, but after 2 months i bought the Kala KA-FMC Solid Spruce Flame Maple Concert Ukelele and i enjoyed playing even more. While i'm writing this, the 3e ukulele arrived for my youngest daughter 4e birthday. She got the fever as well :) Currently i'm practicing Banana Pancakes, Riptide, Let it Be and Creep! Thanks for all the effort you have done to make this community!

Brand new. Bought this Cordoba Concert Uku Nov, 6th last year. Took a week for me to figure out the little tuner needed to be on Ukulele setting and I had to get The Guitar Center dude to restring a broken string. I learned Feliz Navidad through your YouTube video and the Beginner Holiday Jam songbook. I still can’t sing and play but I am just amazed I can play anything. I pick it up every day and I am working on my strumming, picking and Chunk. Thank you for all your videos. I learn a lot by just watching you.

Yes, I am a teacher, 8th grade reading teacher currently (27th year in the classroom, 24 were in special education). My friend, John, who will be at NAMM and promised to go see you there for me, sent me 12 ukuleles to start a club at my school this year, soooooooo even though I'm a beginner myself, I just jumped in and invited kids to join me. Started with 12 kids in October for the 1st Club Meeting and as they buy their own ukulele and return my "loaner" additional kids join our club. We're up to 15 with a waiting list of kids wanting to join, which blows me away. They also insisted we meet weekly instead of just monthly club meetings, so while they shock me that they want to stay late each week, I am so proud of each and every one of them.

Donna AllenKrug

I've texted them to see what songs they're interested in learning the 2nd half of the school year.

Roberta Jan-Johnson

Hi Cynthia, I joined you a week ago. My grandson and son saw your video on

Roberta Jan-Johnson

Christmas Eve and I've been enjoying your site ever since. I love the way you

Roberta Jan-Johnson

teach so I am signed up for your tutorials. My husband played the uke for 50 years, was self taught and is playing his favorite 20's, 30's and blues songs up in heaven. He left his 6 Martin ukes for me to play to keep his legacy going. I am between a beginner and an intermediate player.....so I have so much to learn. I've been

Sherrie Porter

Hi, I'm Sherrie from Oregon, brand new to Patron group but I've been subscribed to your YouTube channel for over a year. That was working for me until you posted Summertime! My all time favorite blues song! Been playing the Uke for several years off and on. I'd call myself an Advanced Beginner, playing a Soprano Fluke brand Uke called "The Flea". Looking forward to purchasing a Concert uke when we visit Ohau in April. I'm tall with long arms, from my research it seems a Concert Uke should fit me better, maybe easier to hold? Thank You for so many happy hours of Uke playing and for helping me to take it to a level where I'm comfortable playing in front of friends and family.
