Aloha Patrons!

Welcome to July, and a warm welcome to all the new Patrons!  Thanks for joining us here, and thanks to all of you for directly supporting my work and for helping to create a powerful and positive online ukulele community!

If you are a new Patron, please introduce yourself in the comments below. Feel free to share how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have an uke club to play with, what songs you've been working on. And if you've been a Patron for a while and want to share, please go ahead. This is a good place for your questions too - fellow Patrons, feel free to help me answer any newbie questions.

A note for newbies - I know Patreon can be a bit hard to navigate. Please be patient and explore.  Some important resources:

  • Check out our New Patron Guide/FAQ post, and please comment there if you have a question that the FAQ doesn't answer
  • Be sure to join our secret Patrons-Only Facebook group  (email patronhelp@cynthialin.com with your facebook email address - more info in the Community Notes at the bottom of this post.)  Our community on facebook is active and supportive, and it's the best place to post any question you have about Patreon or ukulele.
  • I also recommend downloading our CL Patron App, which has links to all my channels and resources (see Community Notes for links to download).

JUNE 2019 RECAP

Patron Live Events now start at 5:30pm Pacific Time

In June, we tried out a time change for our three main monthly events (Live Lesson, Beginner Jam, and Intermediate Jam), and though I know that there is no time that works for all Patrons, feedback about this adjustment has been mostly positive, so we will continue scheduling our monthly Patron Live Events to start at 5:30pm PT. Thanks for trying this out with me!

New videos

In June, I posted two new videos.

  • I had fun creating a play-along video for "You've Got a Friend," with a furry friend of my own. Watch it on YouTube here.
  • I premiered the new music video for my song "Microscope," from my newly remastered and re-released album of the same title. See it on Facebook. The video features dancers Miche Wong and Babatunji Johnson, with cinematography by Robert Gomez Hernandez. Stream the album now on Spotify, Apple Music, and all digital platforms.

More June 2019 Patron News:

  • In our June 2019 Live Lesson, I taught Elton John's "Your Song." That lesson is now available to all Patrons.
  • I taught a new beginner arrangement of Fleetwood Mac's “Dreams" at our Beginner Live Jam ($10+ Patrons). Only two chords!
  • At our Intermediate Live Jam ($20+ Patrons), I taught Kiss by Prince.  Check it out for a serious rhythmic strumming and barre chord workout!
  • Tickets are still on sale for this year's SF Summer Uke Fest, July 27-28, 2019.  Read all about it in this post. Comment below if you are planning to attend.  I'd like to organize some sort of Patron gathering at the Festival - I look forward to meeting more of you!

Hi Cynthia I will be at the festival. My husband and I are driving down from VANCOUVER BC. I’m taking the intermediate workshops. Excited to be there and hope to meet you. I will be bringing my favourite ukes: the CL Ohana signature concert and my Brian May BMG tenor.

Courtney Bailey

Hi! My name is Courtney Bailey. I bought my ukulele in May. Unfortunately, I have had to pause my practicing because I developed an allergy to the uke. I didn't realize at first it was the uke so I continued playing it. Once it dawned on me what was causing the problem I stopped playing it and the rash is now gone. I want to buy a new one, but I'm thinking I should see my doctor before I do. My ukulele right now is a Mitchell concert. I like the concert size, so when I do buy a new one I would like to buy another concert.

Chipper Williams

Had a “punch to the gut” last month and I’m trying to get back to practicing. I am riding the 1100 miles out to the Uke Fest. Visiting a couple Military Brothers along the way. I am really looking forward to the Uke Fest! It will be a good! Good for my brain, good for my soul. 😉

Ed Chang

I'm a new Patron, and my family and I will be at the SF Uke fest!

Jorge D Chalen

Do you do any events on the east coast?

Ben Griffith

New to the Uke as of 2 weeks ago and love love love your videos. Very well put together and you have such a warm presence. Keep on shining!

Wim van der Zwan

Hello Everyone, I am a newbee and will introduce myself: I am Wim vna der Zwan, aged 63, living in the Netherlands. My wife brought a uke home last year (she plays the guitar, and wanted to try the uke). Now the house is infested with these tiny string-bearers (between the two of us we have 9 ukes, from a Calistasoprano (the 1st uke). up to a Risa LP Tenor. So now it wouold be nice to leurn how to play it. Amongst other I'm working on Stairway to Heaven, and the video's are a great help. I would like to make compliments tot Cynthia for the arangement of this song. It's beatifully simple in this way (and still hard enough for me).

Anita Thompson

I have joined after playing my uke for 3 months having started playing April 23rd this year. Your tutorials and chord charts mean everything. Even as a beginner you keep me challenged and encouraged. I started with a Kala KA-CG which has been great. I just purchased a Lanikai FM-CEC, as I learned at my local Music store, I have been “tone-chasing” (who knew) and this Lanikai fits that sound in my head...for now. Finger picking, chucking and different strum patterns are all in my skill range now because of you. I practice sometimes hours a day (I’m retired) but improvement is my goal. It just makes me happy and you’re right, it’s good for the soul. I appreciate you and what you do for us! ~ Anita

iara alejandra

Hi all! My name is Iara and I'm 3-years into playing the uke. My ukelele journey began when my husband bought me a Makala Shark Uke when I was pregnant to help keep my stress at bay. One of the first songs I learned was "Lava" (thanks to Cynthia's perfect tutorial) and my daughter still asks to hear it on a regular basis. I look forward to learning more and I'm so grateful to Cynthia for sharing her music and fostering such a wonderful community. Thank you, Cynthia! xo

Jenny Selig

Some woods can be sensitizing if not sealed correctly. Do you know the tone wood of the instrument that you think caused the rash?

Cynthia Lin

welcome courtney! interesting, i hadn’t heard of that kind of allergy. maybe a gloss-finished uke would diminish the chances of allergy?

Brooke Gilbert

Hey everyone! My name is Brooke and I just began playing a couple of weeks ago. I had started learning to play the guitar before I developed some rare autoimmune disorders. Playing the guitar was too difficult to play with sore fingers so on a whim I bought a ukulele thinking it might be easier to play with finger pain. I luckily found Cynthia's tutorials a few days after my Uke arrived and i've been addicted ever since!!! So grateful to Cynthia for sharing such wonderful tutorials that make learning to play the Uke accessible to everyone! I have discovered a new passion and I am very grateful! Love the amazing song selections and the jazzy feel Cynthia so often add to the songs! Nice to meet you all :)

Émilie Rémillard

ALOHA! My name is Émilie, from Montréal, Qc. I have been playing ukulele since 2 months now, my first uke was a birthday gift. I had never played anything before! I really got into it when learning The Lion Sleeps Tonight! Thank you Cynthia ;) My ukulele is a concert from Twisted Wood, model DO-300C, made with beautiful ebony. I am in love. Are y'all on the ukulele subreddit? People there post such good videos of themselves. Hope you are all as happy and thankful as I am for the chance of playing and learning this instrument. Love you Cynthia you are the best!

Jenny Selig

Welcome! I occasionally check out the ukulele group on Reddit but haven't watched the videos. Thanks for the tip!

iara alejandra

Thank you! My name is from Brazilian folklore about Amazonian mermaids. The name roughly translates to Mother/Lady of the Waters.

I'm new to you on pateron but not new to you as a teacher. It was time to support you more than with a thumbs up and a comment. Glad to be here from Maryland to Hawaii lol.

Sandra Enns

Just joining mid-July! I'm a music major from ahem-a very long time ago (flute) and just picked up a ukelele about 8 months ago. I'm a teacher and I have been watching 9 and 10 year old students play beautifully for some time. When I ask the kids who taught them, they usually say themselves. I figured if they can learn, so can I! I now enjoy playing for my kindergarten classes. :) Cynthia - you are one of the best teachers on the net which is why I decided to join here. Thank you! :)
