How the Song of the Month works

Here's the TL/DR version of what happens with the Song of the Month:

1. All Patrons vote! (in this post! See the song options below!)

2. I'll create an arrangement for the winning song and teach a Live Lesson (access for $5+ Patrons) and share a Chord Chart (early access for $3+ Patrons).

3. All Patrons receive access to the recorded hour-long Live Lesson the following month.

THANK YOU PATRONS for directly supporting the creation of these higher production Play-Alongs!  Click these links to find all Play-Along posts and Live Lesson posts.

Song choices from your suggestions

This month, I'm sharing song choices that got a lot of love in the comments last month and appealed to me as good all-levels uke songs.  Be sure to comment with your song suggestion and upvote your fellow Patrons' comments!  (See below for instructions)

HOW TO VOTE

1. Click on the check box for as many of the song choices as you like below - yes, multiple votes are allowed. Please note - as soon as you tick the checkbox, the vote is counted. (You can look at the ticker on the right! Sometimes the ticking doesn't work on certain devices - in this case, try your laptop or desktop vs tablet or mobile.)

2. Comment with ONE SONG that you’d want for next month's tutorial. Remember that our Patrons span all across the world, so the songs that tend to win are worldwide, classic hits. I will also keep your suggestions in mind for our other monthly lessons. Please keep it to one song suggestion per person.

3. Upvote other people's song choices by clicking the heart on their comment. Upvotes are an easy way to double your voting power! Your upvotes matter, so I encourage you to come back and look through your fellow Patrons' comments to upvote.

Thank you, and happy voting!

YES!! Thank you for adding Hazy Shade of Winter to the list!! I've been asking for this one for a year now....For anyone out there who is hesitating, check out the intro riff on the Simon & Garfunkel version. Would be amazing on the ukulele - and perfect for the season. Huge thanks for votes for this song!!

Julie Rogers

Resilient by Rising Appalachia (perfect for the banjolele!)

Greg Clifford

I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry by Hank Williams

Tonya Mason

I really like the guitar part on more than words, but the lyrics, to my modern ear, feel kind of rapey.

Kate

I finally got around to doing your Stairway to Heaven tutorials. I had tried it in my very first month of playing and was no where close to ready. I am now. in no small part to your great instruction. I would

Jenny Selig

You may already know this, but others scrolling through might want to know -- for folks at the $20 level it's available already, which may make it harder to win a monthly vote, as some folks have already learned it. I don't know if there's a song that Cynthia has taught at the $10 or $20 level that has also gone on to be a $5+ level Live Lesson song, but that's not to say it couldn't happen! https://www.patreon.com/posts/may-2019-live-27032438

Jenny Selig

This is a great song, and I agree a Cynthia lesson would be awesome (and I'd vote for it), but while we wait I recommend Tyler (Ten Thumbs), who has a good arrangement on it that I learned a few years ago. <3 Free video on YT. :)

Heather Parsons

Wake Me in the Morning Light by Mandolin Orange

Miko Yokoi

Losing my Religion, REM

Karen Hoffman

Father and Son - Yusuf Islam / Cat Stevens

Adriana Yon

I Just Called to Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder

Patsy Walker

would really like the More Than Words song sometime even if it doesn't win this month.

Abby Joslin

Fingers crossed for Hazy Shade of Winter- I really want to see what Cynthia does with the harmonies!

Pam

We'll Sing in the Sunshine, Helen Reddy

Lisa Reinhard

I'd love some Rolling Stones, e. g. paint it black.

Bianca

Four five seconds... Rihanna, West, Mc Cartney

Jess Curren

I'd love something a little more modern...

Karen Kermis

Kiss Me by Sixpence none the richer

Cate Eales

Just so everyone knows, I'll be asking for Angel From Montgomery (John Prine/Bonnie Raitt) until I get it! ;-) Consider this your second AND third warnings!

Janet Carroll

We haven't had much Joni, and for us fans, that would be awesome!

Amanda Matheson

It's too bad Marren Morris won't win, it's a little discouraging and I don't see the point. It gives the illusion of choice. The song picks need to be mixed up a little more somehow...

Cynthia Lin

it’s a way for me to see if there’s enough interest to teach it for a beginner or intermediate lesson. i put The Bones on the list because it got suggested last month by a Patron and I happen to like the song and think it would make a good ukulele song. the community spans all ages and countries, so the well-known classics are more likely to win, but if there’s enough interest in a new song, i may post it elsewhere, like on instagram or youtube

Catherine Noone

I always vote for the songs I know, which are usually the "oldies" and am usually very happy with the outcome. But perhaps it would be a good idea to sometimes only have newer songs in the poll. That would keep the youngsters happy and also encourage us oldies to listen to some new music and then choose a favourite. Looking forward to my first live lesson later this week. Looks like it will be Moondance, a great song. I voted for Yellow Taxi but will also be happy with Moondance.

Lili

If It Hadn't Been for Love, please (Steeldrivers or Adele)

Ally

I've been on a real 90s early 00s kick. All for You by Sister Hazel, Closer to Fine by Indigo Girls, Shiney Happy People by REM... anything by REM. Tori Amos. Tonight Tonight by Smashing Pumpkins. OK I'll stop now.

Andrea Phillips

I think Top of the World by the Carpenters would be fantastic.

Charlotte Sullivan

An excellent choice of songs for this month. Thank you.

Kathy Friedman

Your love is forever by George Harrison

Polyxeni

One thing I love about the song voting is getting to listen to some songs I don't know at all, or don't know well. What a great song Big Yellow Taxi is, we should do it at some point Cynthia, when I heard the lyrics I thought it was something that Iz could have written about Hawaii and then today I read on Wikipedia that she wrote it about Hawaii! We should work on it at some point, fantastic song...

LSK76

Lenka - Everything at once, The Show, Trouble is a Friend. A little Indie Pop to switch it up!

John Lynch

Now that winter is setting in ... Mr. Blue Sky

Laura

Avery, trying again for My Sweet Lord by George Harrison. Thanks!

Shauna L

The older songs are more familiar to me, and they span a longer time period (anywhere from probably 1945 - 2014 could be construed as "older,") but I have loved the newer songs that I never would have heard had I not been following Cynthia (e.g., Senorita - I listen to NPR probably waaay too much). I see what the poster above means - this ballot is more heavily loaded toward older songs. But then again, standards like I'll Be Seeing You are also novel to a lot of people. I think we've had a pretty good variety of genres.

Michelle Shackleton

I would love to learn “Rise” by Eddie Vedder 😍❤️❤️❤️ Pleez! 😬🙏

Sandra Smith

This Christmas by Donny Hathaway!

Stephanie Kugler

Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream, Simon and Garfunkel

Catherine Noone

The Horses by Rickie Lee Jones and covered by Daryl Braithwaite in Australia

Gordon Wilkie

Into My Arms by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds!!!
