Aloha, Patrons!

I want to tell you about my voice workshop this Saturday, but first, a little storytime...

Back in 2016 or so, when I decided to make ukulele my main focus, I was quite busy as a vocal coach for actors and singers, teaching both privately as well as at an acting school in San Francisco.  I loved teaching voice, but the pull of the ukulele wave was too strong to resist.  I focused on uke, and the rest is history. :)

I believe my experience teaching voice helped me hone my teaching method, and gave me the skills to teach ukulele on a global scale.  Teaching voice is more challenging than teaching ukulele - each studentʻs vocal "instrument" is so different, and since you cannot physically see or manipulate the voice, vocal coaches use a variety of visualizations and metaphors to illuminate vocal concepts.  I had to listen closely and guide each student in learning to pay razor-sharp attention to his or her own breathing and vocal habits.  As a singer, teaching allowed me to study my instrument closely and also kept my voice in top shape.

After my recent bout of laryngitis on Australia tour, I felt a calling to come back to my own vocal basics.  The move to Hawaii had shaken up my routine of doing daily vocal warmups, and I needed to rebuild the strength and stamina of my voice.  In reviewing the fundamentals of breath work, tone, and resonance, I realized that my "teacher brain" was getting excited about preparing vocal lessons and exercises to share.  Now, with the experience of teaching ukulele online, I am ready to create a system of teaching voice and singing for beginners that can work in an online format.  I intend to launch a new voice channel soon, and I want to share an initial voice workshop with my Patrons.

I am passionate about teaching voice, because I believe everyone can benefit from voice work.  I developed my own vocal training method called mindbodyvoice, which integrates the traditional techniques from my background in opera and theatre with the holistic breathing and mindful movement of yoga.  Although we will focus on singing, mindbodyvoice is more than doing vocal exercises; it’s about developing awareness of your voice to fully express your inner world.  I believe a healthy voice is key to a healthy life.  (Key!  get it??)

Hope to see you Saturday!  Please share any questions or comments below!

About the "Intro to Singing" workshop

If you can talk, then you can sing.  The voice we use everyday to talk, laugh, and whisper is actually an instrument.  Singing is just a matter of learning to play that instrument, and yes, everyone can learn to sing.

My goal is to show you the basics of how to "tune" and "play" your vocal instrument.  Iʻll share easy vocal warm ups with explanations of how the body is working to produce those sounds. Weʻll work on breathing and relaxation exercises, humming on scales, resonating on open vowels, listening for intonation, and how to practice paying attention and building good vocal habits.  Understanding how the voice works will help you feel more confident to explore your own voice.

Thanks for that back story Cynthia. One of my goals is my voice this year. I was hoping to do some voice lessons in our area. I told my husband you were going to do a voice class and his first reaction was ... voice lessons online couldn’t work. Well, I do virtual TELE online work. Virtually everyone I work with said my job couldn’t transfer over to virtual technology. No one I work with believes that anymore because we proved them wrong!!! (With a little grant help!) I do workshops in my field now just to try to help my field try to be open to the pros of virtual. It opens doors to people who wouldn’t have gotten the support!!! ❤️ It doesn’t mean it can’t be done, but a good coach / teacher will find ways to adapt and teach it well. If anyone will do it well, I believe it will be YOU! 🎶🎶🎶 Can’t wait! I’m IN!!!! Maggie from Ohio❤️
