April 2020 Recap - Patron Events and new Videos:

Stay well, everyone! I look forward to seeing you online this month.

Guest workshops: Essential Bass Lines U-Bass Workshop with Ukulenny, Music Theory/Improvising Part 2 with Abe Lagrimas, Jr.

I love learning from my musician friends, and I'm happy to use this platform to support great ukulele artists and teachers while sharing more knowledge and music with Patrons.

Ukulenny will teach a U-Bass workshop on Essential Bass Lines that all aspiring bassists should know.  If you're interested in bass but don't have one yet, you can use a guitar (try to borrow one) and just play on the lowest strings.  Also, just FYI, you can use any bass - a U-Bass is the same as a regular bass.  I recommend you review Ukulenny's U-BASSics workshop that he taught for the Patrons last year (available for $5+).

Abe's Intro to Music Theory and Improvising workshop last month was really illuminating, and I'm excited to have him back to teach a follow up.  We'll work on learning to improvise higher up on the fretboard.

Learn about leading jams online with our Patron-led Zoom Jam

As a way to foster more online jam-leading, I wanted to host a Zoom Jam for Patrons so that we can all have more experience with using Zoom in a round-robin, musical jam context.  The jam will be available to Intermediate level ($20+) Patrons to keep the group smaller.  I'm asking our Community Managers to take turns leading songs in the jam, so that they can practice leading online, share their own Zoom / jam-leading tips, and lead us through songs that I haven't taught yet or that we don't often play.  I like to try new things, so consider this an experiment, and we'll have fun and help each other develop new skills.  I'm excited to see others lead!

Linda Dick

Hi all, I just joined and am excited to be here! I've had a uke for a few years but never got past the "advanced beginner" phase and put it aside for a while. I started up again in January and I'm finding much more motivation to practice now that I'm stuck at home! :) Making music is quite grounding in these uncertain times. My ukulele is a Cordoba 15CM (concert size).

Maggie

Such a cool idea to do a zoom jam lesson! 👍🏻 I’ve been doing weekly Zoom ukulele groups with my group. No way could I have lead them without watching cynthia/you for years! ❤️ I tried to lead it much like You/Cynthia... and it works well. We share our music on the screen to play along. I originally led the whole set of music- and my husband took care of all the technology and sound on the back end so that his bass and my uke went in clear- (I would NOT have known how to do that) but I felt like years of watching Cynthia... you’ve modeled some really good teaching techniques for handling the classes and online lessons and jams!!! My group is interesting though- they like to lead and share their talents, they like to perform and we’ve landed on a nice routine of one person leads a three song set/ all others muted... and after 10 songs i open it up for open mic. I have actually enjoyed the open mic so much. Quieter members of my group have stepped up to practice being brave! I’ve loved that part. We never did open mic in uke group and that’s been fun to hear what others are working on and praise their progress. I will miss this particular part when we gather again. Any other ideas about novel ways to share beyond this? Has anyone done anything in their Zoom groups that have been more interactive (with the limited technology!?)

Jen Russo

Tainted Love? OMG my calendar is officially cleared!!

Jen Russo

Welcome Linda! I consider myself an intermediate beginner 😅 Can’t seem to get past strumming chords, but honestly it doesn’t bother me much. Welcome back to uke!!

Cynthia Lin

hi maggie! great to hear about your experience. i'll write up a separate post to collect everyone's experience with Zoom jamming. i will swap verses back and forth with lenny, and i've heard about some groups un-muting folks at different random times. if other folks have Zoom jam experiences to share, please do!

theycallmemiyagi

Hi y'all! I'm a complete musical noob and wanted to pick up the Uke as my gateway instrument. I picked up the Enya Nova for it's durability since I can be a bit of a klutz handling things. I came across Cynthia's YouTube videos and just enjoyed her teaching style that I decided to join the Patreon. I'm still practicing getting that finger strength so I've only been practicing Three Little Birds. I'll soon be practicing the reggae strumming! Thanks for the support!

Dianne Freeze

Hi, I started to learn the guitar a few years ago and got really frustrated so thought I would try the uke but I have been just dabbling until recently. I have a Makaka Shark in Gray because I love the retro look! I have been teaching myself with various online teachers and was thrilled to find Cynthia on Patreon as I think it is a wonderful way to support small businesses plus so far I am really liking her teaching style. There is so much to check out I am going to have to forgo one of my other interests in order to spend more time here. I finally am beginning to get calluses. Looks like a great community. Thanks!

Terrina Fairbrother

Hey David welcome!! I started too with Cynthia’s beginner lessons on YouTube and found her teaching style to by far the best from anyone else on you tube!! As a Patron you can search back over previous beginner lessons and jams!!! When I joined I started at the oldest lessons and worked my way thru!! Enjoy!!!!

Terrina Fairbrother

Hey Dianne welcome!!! Gotta love those calluses hey!! It’s like a right of passage!!! Cynthia’s style of teaching is amazing isn’t it!!! So clear and concise and she remembers what it’s like to be a beginner who feels all thumbs!!!

Sarah High

Hi! I played Suzuki piano as a girl but always wanted to play a portable instrument. When social distancing started, I picked up my son's Luna uke & haven't put it down! I have learned Cynthia's Can't Help Falling in Love & am working on Space Oddity. I am getting a Mainland Red Cedar Tenor Ukulele for myself & am very excited. I am really looking forward to Tainted Love!!

Sarah High

Also, does anyone have a tip for cracked fingernails? My right hand index finger that I strum with cracked in half, so I super glued it. Any other suggestions?

Terrina Fairbrother

Hey Sarah!! I played the trombone growing up!! A big difference to the Uke - I always wanted to play an instrument that people could sing along to - I considered the piano but as its not portable decided on the Uke!!! Isn’t Space Oddity seriously cool!!!!

Terrina Fairbrother

Sarah I think some players put acrylic over strumming nails to help strengthen them - maybe that might work for you???

Ruth Gicqueau-Michel Simpson

Hi Cynthia, Ruth Gicqueau-Michel/Simpson here. Thanks so much for all the great content. I mostly watch the day after because of time zone issues but I love every video. The workshop with Abe was amazing. I’ve been playing classical violin since I was 6 so I read music no problem and understand harmony, but applying it to improvisation as Abe did was like learning a whole new skill. Like having a transformer car toy for years and discovering suddenly it could also be a robot 😃. I also LOVED Bad Guy and the rhythm challenges it presented. Thank you!

Eeelad

Eyup everyone, Smiler here from Yorkshire England. A newbie to the site and got interested in thefollowing last years visit to the Polynesian Islands. Picked my first Uke up in Oahu, I got hooked on the music and never looked back.

Clari Melchor Bowman

Hello everyone, Just wanted to introduce myself... I'm Clari and I'm in Manchester UK. I started tinkering with the Uke about 2 years ago. I have never seemed to be able to progress in the way I would like. Then I fell upon the lovely Cynthia on YouTube. I haven't been able to put my uke down since. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of content she provides here and on her YouTube, its amazing! This crazy lockdown has, as I'm sure for many, given me time to play. I'm playing on a Pono tenor. Lots of good wishes to Cynthia and everyone of her patreons- stay safe, stay well! 😊🌻

Sarah High

I love the trombone! And yes, Space Oddity is super cool- I stayed up way too late working on it last night!

Judi Brenstein

Hi all, I'm Judi and live in Austin, TX. I started this because it would be a good way to do something creative during hectic workdays that often turn into 12-15 hour work days. It's forced relaxation, along with forced treadmill workouts to stop my workaholic ways! But, just as importantly, my toddler grandchildren like it when Nana sings so I'm taking time out of my day to sing with them and have enjoyed picking up songs you've done that they either know or I can teach them. My 4 year old grandson things it is cool and has learned to take a bow at the end of his performance. Really enjoy the ease of the lessons and the community.

Maggie

YES. For sure I want to hear everyone's collective experience and tips. Thank you for putting time into this topic.

Cynthia Lin

aloha Ruth! that's a great point, that even if you understand music theory, applying it to improvisation on the ukulele fretboard is a different beast. it is so fun to unlock these concepts, and sometimes it just takes the right teacher. :)

Katelyn Hoffman

Hello Everyone! I’m new to the Patreon community. I took a free uke lesson when I was on vacation in Hawaii last December and decided to pick up a Kala Soprano for myself. I sort of dropped off practicing for a while, but I’ve been playing almost every day since the quarantine started. It’s been a great therapy for me and I’m excited to learn more than just the few chords I know.

Terry Brandsma

Hi Clara. Welcome to the group! I've been playing for just under 2 years now, and was so glad that I stumbled upon Cynthia and her tutorials. I also started a local ukulele jam club that used to meet at least twice a month, but it is in hiatus now. Maybe there is one in your area too? My tenor is my go-to uke, but I still like to play my concert and soprano every now and then.

Terry Brandsma

Hi Judy. That's so fun that your grandkids perform with you! I play and singalong with my local ukulele club (at least I did before the stay-at-home orders), but my family tends to avoid me when I play. :) .

Terry Brandsma

Hi Veronica - I so agree with your song suggestion! Rainbow Connection is my favorite ukulele song to play! (I'd like a banjolele too - might be my next purchase!)

Terry Brandsma

Hi Katelyn - welcome to the group! It's been great therapy for me too. Some days I start practicing a few songs and before I know it it's 2 hours later. Be sure to sign up for the private Facebook group (details in main message above). I'd suggest working through Cynthia's beginner lessons/tutorials first, then branching out after that. The key is to practice a bit each day and stick with it.

Terrina Fairbrother

Hey welcome Katelyn - one of tricks to practicing every day is to not put your Uke away!!! So when life returns to normal - don’t put in a cupboard or in another room out of sight!!! I leave my go to Uke on my dining table (I have a open plan kitchen/dining)!!! Then when I have five minutes free I can pick it up for a quick strum!!! Out of sight is out of mind!!!

Eeelad

I bought a Kala 6 string from the Polynesian Cultural Centre after my 20 min lesson with them. Back in the UK I have since treate myself to a KoAloha Soprano and a Kanilea Tenor both sound terrific keep up the grand work Cynthia. I’m actually at a reasonable standard now thanks to you 🌈

Prumeh Lee

Hello! I just joined because I wanted to show how much I appreciate and respect the teaching abilities of Cynthia Lin. I also enjoy listening to her sing and play. I learned the guitar when I was younger. But currently we don't have a guitar in the house (we moved back to the US after living abroad for many years). My daughter received a ukelele as a birthday present several years ago, but she didn't really take to learning it. I decided to take it out and learn the ukelele myself (in NYC we have been in shutdown almost 2 months). I looked at several different youtube channels but I loved your teaching the most! I also appreciated the sheet music as well. Thank you for helping me learn the ukelele! I look forward to taking the ukelele with me when we can finally go camping in the future. My daughter is finally beginning to play the ukelele as well.

Clari Melchor Bowman

Hi Prumeh, I'm new here also. I just love that you took your daughter's uke as she wasn't playing it, this really made me smile!

Diane Blardony

Aloha! I just joined as well. I'm a newbie to the ukulele. I've been playing since October and learning the basics and some beginner songs from Cynthia's YouTube channel. I've always wanted to play the uke but hesitated because I never learned to read music and have never played an instrument in my life. The elementary school that I teach at started an Ukulele Club in October and I decided I had no excuses! I'm learning along with a handful of fifth graders and a teacher at my school who has been a patron here for a while. I'm looking forward to learning with all of you!

Luciole Lastiolb

Hello all, Excuse my english, I'm a french (from France) uke learner, Cynthia is the first I followed on YouTube ❤️. I've got a concerto uke by Ortega for 4 years but I really play since 3 weeks only ! I hope everyone is OK 🤗

Jon Sadler

Hi from Birmingham in England. Joined last week. Play classical guitar and violin and I sing in a CBSO choir. Ukelele is a lockdown challenge but it is addictive. So nice to have clear and fabulous instruction to help me along. Ukelele is a Flight Phantom.

Brenda Strikwerda

I don't understand how to find tutorials on here. I had landslide before but now I can't find it.

BJ Anderson

Hi from Dallas, Texas, USA. I may have posted elsewhere as a new Patreon supporter, but wanted to check in here. I've been playing the ukulele for 8 years. My most prized possession is a gift from a uke group I left behind a couple years ago: a wooden cigar box uke make by Larry Vitalo of our group, the Free Range Ukulele Society of Oak Park (right next to Chicago). The back is signed by the whole gang, the front is an original design painted by Brenda Watkins, also of the group. Moved back to Dallas a couple years ago, and play weekly with a group known as The East Dallas Uke-A-Ladies. Just finished a COVID parody using Cynthia's chart (transposed to C) of Mariah Carey's hit, All I Want for Christmas, entitled All I Want for Springtime. It's posted in her 100 Days of Ukulele and my Facebook page. Cynthia and her staff and volunteers and her hundreds of online projects TOTALLY ROCK THE HOUSE. I so appreciate the opportunities you present to the world!!

Bob Potter

Hi all, new to this Patreon thing but been following Cynthia on YouTube for a while. I have been playing for 3 years now, all I ever played before was the recorder at school and that was well over 40 years ago. Really enjoying it and find Cynthia's teaching methods and variation of songs inspiring. Looking forward to joining in more. Bob Potter, England.

Janet Harradine

hi, im a new player and from Australia. Love your lessons and your spirit. xJ

Lisa Lynch

Hi everyone! I am brand new to this Patreon thing and am excited to get additional access to Cynthias lessons as I have exhausted all of her free content on YouTube. This is a great way to help give back to such a fantastic teacher! Glad to be a part of the group! Cleveland Ohio. USA.

Linda Mahnken

I just received my ukulele in April 2020. I am enjoying your lessons. Thank you so much! I hope I will be able to play in live sessions in San Francisco after Shelter-In-Place is lifted.

Theresa Serrant-John

I'm a newbie! I am excited about learning everything on my ukulele. I've watched your lessons. I want to start right away. Thanks

Tina Le

Hello. I'm Tinh Le (aka Tina ) from Vietnam! One of my friends gave me a ukulele as a gift when I was in the U.S and I have been practicing for 1,5 years! Now I'm back in Vietnam and want to keep practicing ukulele as a part of my habits! Thanks!
