Aloha, Patrons!

October is here, which means the time has come around again for me to share my song Zombie Heart. 🧟‍♀️ I didn't write it as a Halloween song, but it's nice to have a song ready for the occasion. :)  This year, I will teach this song and invite the Patrons to share zombie videos of your own for a Zombie Heart virtual flash mob!  More details below.

Welcome to all the new Patrons and "Quarantine Newbies" aka "Qukes"!  Please read on below for newbie-specific info, and introduce yourself in the comments.

Thank you to all reading this, new or not, for directly supporting my work and for helping to create a powerful and positive online ukulele community.  Shoutout to our Community Managers, Facebook group moderators, and regional Squad leaders who give their time and energy to support our Patron family and the wider ukulele community.  Leadership is how a community grows, so if you'd like to lead, go for it. If you're not sure how to start, watch other leaders and imitate, and ask for help.  Feel free to comment here or in our private Facebook group (find the link near the end of this post).

October theme: Zombie Prom

Let's celebrate Halloween together online with music and costumes (!!) for our Zombie Prom Strum Party!  For our monthly CL x Ukulenny Community Livestream, which is now an official Patron-sponsored event, I'll curate a songbook of Halloween-themed songs to jam together.

To prepare for the jam, I'll teach "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran for our Beginner Live Jam this Thursday - we'll get lots of practice on the dreaded E chord.  And for the monthly Live Lesson, I will teach my song "Zombie Heart," and we'll talk about details for the Zombie Heart virtual flash mob.  I will invite Patrons to put on their best zombie faces and record a video playing Zombie Heart, and we'll edit together a group compilation video as a play-along.  Family members and pets welcome!

Other songs we're planning to include in the Halloween Jam - "A Thousand Years" from the Twilight movie series (watch Beginner Jam lesson here), Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Stevie Wonder's "Superstition."  Do you have other song suggestions for this month's theme?  Share in the comments below.

Ukulele Magazine Winter 2020 cover story

I want to thank you for all of your love and kind words on the new Ukulele Magazine cover. The Patron community is a huge part of my ukulele journey, and I will do all I can to make you proud.

As part of the feature on the U3 In Waves album, the latest issue of Ukulele Magazine includes a full transcription of my solo arrangement of "Message in a Bottle".  For this month's Intermediate Live Jam, I will walk you through the challenging riff and timing.  When you get up to speed, you can practice with the full-band version on In Waves.

Creator Chronicles

My new weekly behind-the-scenes series about my creator life has been a refreshing challenge - I know how to create ukulele lessons and tutorials, but it's a different beast to document my daily work and edit it down into an interesting story.  The series has been well-received so far, and I would love to hear your feedback.  Catch up on the first 5 episodes on instagram @cynthialinmusic.  Thank you to Patreon for inviting to become a Creator Ambassador.  Sharing my experience as a creator gives me fresh eyes on my daily work and a wider view of how I can help empower more folks to create.

Thank you for reading, and hope to see you online soon!

Nicole Daufeldt

Hi Folks, I'm here for few months and didn't introduce myself. I'm sorry! I started to play uke during quarantaine 😅🙃 and while playing every day my fingers were hurting and I felt a huge process. I just learned both parts of stairway to heaven, happy and wake me up buttercup and I'm working on fly me to the moon 🥰🌖 my uke is a cheap mahagony one and doesn't sound like Cynthia's. I really wish to get a better one <3 maybe. one day 😉 thank you to make my year great in some way, that I found the key to myself: music <3

Cynthia Lin

welcome, nicole! how wonderful, to find that music is the key to yourself! i think a lot of people here feel the same way 🌟

Shoko Leger

Aloha everyone! My name is Shoko. I'm Japanese born and raised, currently living in Atlantic coast of Canada. I bought a cheap pink ukulele for my daughter few years ago but she didn't quite keep upwith it. So I decided to play around during the Covid, then I joined 100days ike challenge. But I hadn't posted any for 5 months because I was sort of hesitant to record with that pink uke. Then I found a almost new second hand Kala uke. I started posting the song and I'm about 13/100. I would like to be able to play Fly me to the moon one day.

Shoko Leger

I love, love, love the uke community. They're are the kindest people who support and encourage others each other

Nicole Daufeldt

🌴🏝🌋 thank you. oh, and I'm from Germany, but here's no good uke teacher such as you 😊

Milton Humphus

Hi y'all my name is Milton nick name Mel , I've played guitar for a few years but just started the uke a few weeks ago I have two flight uke's the second one I just got a couple of weeks ago and it's a Flight Phantom I really like it both are tenors , wow what fun I think between my previous experience with the guitar and a lot of help from Cynthia Lin and others I might learn a song or two right now I'm working on timing you know the 1e and ah 2e and ah so forth lol :)

Heidi

Cynthia and Ukulenny always know how to throw a party! Looking forward to the fun🤙🎶🌊🌸🎶. Song request for this month’s festivities: Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon. Aaoooooo!

Heidi

Another great song would be Spooky by The Classics IV. Thanks for asking for suggestions!

Carmen

My song suggestion is Season Of The Witch by Donovan.

Abby Joslin

Oh, there's so much great Halloween music out there! Lots of good pieces on the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack (This Is Halloween is the obvious one, but Sally's Song is great), there are some fun pieces from the Corpse Bride if you stick with the Tim Burton theme. There are quick, fun little things like the Addams Family theme song, there have been phenomenal covers of I Put A Spell On You. It's a parody, but there's always Werewolf Bar Mitzvah. Ghostbusters theme song? Red Right Hand by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds? Voltaire's When You're Evil? Jump in the Line (Beetlejuice)?

Cheri Schuyler

I would love to do Spooky by the ClassicsIV as well! Werewolves of London.

Shelley Rubzow

I would like to suggest Bad Moon Rising! Looking forward to another month of learning 💕🥰

Jan

Hi all! I'm Jan, originally from Seattle, but now living on a boat in Baja California just north of Cabo San Lucas. Uke is a great boat instrument as it's small, portable, and loads of fun. Started playing a year and a half ago -- as a kid I taught myself to read music, took flute, violin, guitar, and piano lessons but never practiced. Now, at 68 years of age, I'm scheduling my whole day to accommodate at least an hour's practice. I've discovered in these weird and stressful times, it's impossible to be depressed or anxious when playing ukulele!

Vincent

Hi Cynthia Greetings from Cardiff,Wales in the Uk. Loving all the tutorials. I’m a Quke too. Never played any instrument before but my granddaughter was given a Ukelele in School and I thought to myself “If not now, then when?” Been playing for about 4 weeks on a Banjolele . I went that route because I have big fat fingers and knew I couldn’t manage on a Soprano. If I improve I’m thinking I might buy a Tenor XL which will give me more space. Playing a D chord is impossible for me! Do you have any advice? All the best Vincent

Vanessa Causley

Advice on D chord or perfecting any chord is in Cynthias Beginner Jam 8 th October .....Hungry like the Wolf. It’s all about stacking the fingers and applying pressure to the back of the neck with your thumb and playing one string of the chord at a time to see where the string doesn’t t ring clear. She shows us on the video. It’s really good advice!

Leila Covrigaru

Hi guys, my name is Leila and I live in Denver Colorado. I’ve been playing the uke for about 4 1/2 years. I just stopped private lessons and am now looking for community on the Internet. I am very excited to join you guys. I have a Gold Tone Banjolele, an Enya Nova in blue, a Blackbird Farallon, and a Pono. I definitely have a touch of UAS (Ukulele Acquisitions Syndrome). I’m still trying to figure out what kind of music I like playing the most. I really enjoy singing so I’m not big on chord Melodie. But I like jazz, bossa nova, and of course pop songs from the 60s and 70’s. Pretty much anything. I was just getting comfortable playing in assisted living places when Covid hit. Really disappointed that I can’t get out and play for people.

July Coo

Hi Everyone, my name is July and I’m from Geneva, Switzerland. I have been playing the ukelele for almost a month now. I first picked it up to accompany my best friend who is still in quarantine in the Philippines - we wanted to learn something new together. Little did I know that I would love it so much that I have been playing every single day since I got my ukelele (and i would play for hours on weekends). I cannot join any local group here as I am socially distancing myself (as a 3-time cancer survivor, I need to be extra careful). So Cynthia’s classes and my zoom sessions with my best friend are the rays of sunlight that warm up my day during these extraordinary times! Picking up the ukelele gives me an automatic boost of joy. ❤️

Rachel McCrimmon

I would suggest I put a spell on you by screamin jay hawkins for this month's theme.

Lauren Samuels

Hi from Nashville, TN! I am a very new "Quke," playing baritone. I am so glad to have found Cynthia's beautiful singing and playing and this welcoming community!
