Aloha, Patrons!

Happy December, and what a year it's been.  During this festive season, I'm reflecting on our very human need for togetherness, community, and sharing of songs and joy.  We have two special live events this month, along with our regular Patreon events - I hope you'll be able to join us for some virtual jamming and celebration.

Welcome to all the new Patrons and "Quarantine Newbies" aka "Qukes"!  Please read on below for newbie-specific info, and introduce yourself in the comments.

Thank you to all reading this, new or not, for directly supporting my work and for helping to create a powerful and positive online ukulele community. I always like to give a shoutout to our Community Managers, Facebook group moderators, and regional Squad leaders who give their time and energy to support our Patron family and the wider ukulele community. Leadership is how a community grows, so if you'd like to lead, go for it. If you're not sure how to start, watch other leaders and imitate, and ask for help. Feel free to comment here or in our private Facebook group (find the link near the end of this post).

December theme: Holiday Cheer in Full Gear!

Remember that the deadline for submitting a video to my "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" Flash Mob video is tomorrow, December 3 (although if you really need another day or two, that would be ok 😊). Get all the details in this post.  It's been so fun to see all the submissions so far, thank you!

Special Livestream Holiday events - full details will come in a separate post, but wanted to give you some info here first.

  • 12/5 Holiday Strum-Along, with Ukulenny - going live on YouTube at 2pm Pacific, click here for video link.  In this beginner-friendly livestream, we'll be playing songs from the updated Beginner Holiday Songbook, which I've attached to the bottom of this post so you can get some practice in.  The updated Songbook has 2 Hanukkah songs added, as well as links to available play-along videos.  (Please note that some videos are not available yet - the links are temporary placeholders for videos to come).  You can also go to my new-ish site ukulele101.com and visit the Holiday Songbook link for practice videos.
  • 12/12 Holiday Aloha Concert, with Ukulenny, Craig Chee & Sarah Maisel - going live on YouTube at 2pm Pacific, click here for video link.  Excited to perform with Craig and Sarah in real life (they just moved to Honolulu!), and Lenny will beam in via internet magic, as he always does.  We'll also feature special performances, giveaways, and island-style holiday cheer (and treats)!

In our Beginner Live Jam tomorrow, I'll teach "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey (here's a link to my ukulele version with my band), and we'll review songs from the updated Beginner Holiday Songbook in preparation for the Holiday Strum-Along.

For our All-Levels Live Lesson next week, I'll teach "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon.  I'm working on a new all-levels arrangement that I think will be really fun to play.

For our Intermediate Live Jam, I'll teach "Christmas Time is Here" by Vince Guaraldi, as performed by U3.  We'll also meet via Zoom so that we can see and hear each other as we jam songs from the new Intermediate Holiday Songbook.

If you're not a holiday music fan, I totally understand.  Please see these songs as another tool for learning - I find that holiday songs are great for teaching ukulele because the melodies and lyrics are so familiar to people across the world.  I hope you'll still join us for the camaraderie and good cheer.

Thank you for reading, and sending you warm aloha!

Looking forward to learning Charlie Brown Christmas 🎄 💕

Lisa Ann

Hello I am new to the group. I have been playing the ukulele since March. I play three ukuleles, 2 concerts, a Luna and a Lava, and a Enya tenor. I enjoy the Enya the most but play all three almost everyday. I am overjoyed that I finally have started to learn how to play, I wanted to learn how to play since I was a little human. I am from Upstate NY, I am a 1st grade teacher and would love to meet more uku people. 🙂💙

Linda Bates

Hi everyone! I am a beginner, I wish I had started playing long ago! Love music and love playo

Linda Bates

Oops Sorry. Love playing with others. Thank you Cynthia for your enthusiasm!

Ken (UKEn) Freestone

Always fun to catch up (Mmmm- ketchup) on all the Ukenews. See you online soon!!

Joe Winnie

Is it possible to buy a copy of the intermediate christmas songbook without joining the 20$ tier?

Cynthia Lin

welcome, Lisa Ann! ukulele is a great skill for a 1st grade teacher! thanks for being here :)

Cynthia Lin

hi Joe! i’d suggest upgrading for the month to get the songbook and then downgrading again right after. the songbooks are not technically for sale, they are educational tools for the lesson. thanks!

Cheryl Alfred

Hello Everyone! I am new to the group - just joined a couple days ago. I have been playing for a little over a year. I have a Kala soprano (so far!). I was playing with two local UKE groups here in Indianapolis until the pandemic hit. I am very excited to participate in the Beginner Live Jam tonight!

Chris Jones

I am new to the group. I joined just to get the full ‘shallow’ lesson, but was amazed to find how much content and activity there is here. I am excited to try to learn more from the past and ongoing posts. I’ve been playing for about 5 months, prior to that had no experience playing music at age 46. Thanks!!!

Kassie

Hi everyone. I have been playing my concert ukulele since March and I'm really enjoying it. I'm looking to improve my playing and to keep on learning so I can play and sing a wider variety of songs/tunes. I practice most days, with the help of the internet but I am really looking forward playing with a group and having a little more structure. Many thanks

Michael Natapov

Hi Cynthia and everyone. I've joined the group after a month of playing a uke. Mine is a very basic tenor Lenikai but i love it. Learned from you Space Oddity and now mastering Blackbird, it's amazing! I play cello, that's why I was able to start from intermediate songs. Thank you so much!

Laurel Moore

HI I am Laurel from Brisbane Australia. I started playig Uke in August. I was confined to bed and found my dreadnaught guitar was too big and so found a Uke online. I bought an Anuenue Lani Tenor and loved it. This past week I have bought a Bondi Sands spalted maple tenor so I could set up one with a low G. I have loved playing Stairway to Heaven. Thanks Cynthia and Leah Woosley for helping getting me connected to the facebook group

Yvonne Wilson

Great Holiday Ukulele Strum-Along just now, guys, thanks! Where's Ukulenny's "tip jar" you mentioned? He's not on Patreon under Ukulenny.

Jane Elizabeth

Hello from Seattle! I'm Jane and I'm a quke! Started playing my Kala concert uke at the end of August and I'm pretty obsessed. Thank you, Cynthia, for this community. I've enjoyed your youtube vids so much that I had to join the Patrons!

Beebo

Hello from Boston, MA! I'm a "Quke" though I haven't actually started playing as my Uke is still in the mail! I'm a classically trained flutist, but I've been looking for something different in recent times. I've been struggling with finding online help just because I'm an Uke novice but not a -music- novice and I'm hoping this can help!

Sherri Houston

Hello from a teeny tiny town of Piney, Manitoba, Canada (population 27 on a good day). I’m actually a pre-Quke. I just ordered my Luna Concert ukulele and should be getting it in a couple of weeks. I’ve been researching for the last couple of weeks and found Cynthia’s lessons on YouTube. I love Cynthia’s teaching style and have been trying to figure out how to practice chord changes without a uke so I’ll be a little more ready when my uke arrives. Looking forward to the real thing. I used to teach keyboard years ago but have zero experience with the uke or any stringed instrument. Rebecca Hubbard it looks like you and I are in exactly the same boat. Cheers from Canada.

Jacqueline McKinny

Hi Sherri! And Hi Rebecca!!! I am in Colorado and got my Luna Concert ukulele a few months ago and just found Cynthia's YouTube channel a couple days ago. I am so hooked!!! Paddling a similar boat as you two - I've played piano for decades, but never a string instrument. Cynthia is SO much fun to follow along with and the way she breaks everything down makes it easy to put together. You have much entertainment ahead when your ukes arrive:-)

Rachell

I'm a "Quke"-- bought a ukulele curbside without ever having touched one, and started to learn with Cynthia about a month ago during our second lockdown in Winnipeg, Canada. It's been over 10 years since I've done anything musical and I haven't really taken time for myself or spent time on hobbies since having a child three years ago. Now my daughter is my audience and critic ("Sounds bad, I think it's out of tune, mama.") and it means so much to be learning something new. I love Cynthia's teaching and even though some of the YouTube videos were recorded years ago, it feels like she's looking right at me and encouraging me. Five minutes a day is doable, even if it pushes bedtime a tiny bit :) and having "homemade" music in our lives is pure joy. I think it's also really great for my daughter to watch me struggle and learn and have some successes too.
