Aloha, Patrons!!!

Welcome to February!  Thanks to everyone who tuned in for our Easy Breezy Community Jam on Saturday - you can watch the replay now.  Lenny is visiting Hawaii for a couple of months, so we were able to perform together in person, which was so joyful!  We also had lots of new Patrons join over the weekend - so glad to have you here!  I'd recommend checking out our January Beginner Fingerpicking Bootcamp, which is now available to all Patrons.

The 100 Day Project for 2021 has started with a bang!  It's been a whirlwind of energy - lots of new players who are bravely jumping into the challenge, as well as a sweet reunion of friends who are coming back to do the project again.  If you're interested in joining us, check out this link for more info, read the FAQ, visit the facebook group to post or cheer on the participants, and follow #100DaysUke2021 on Instagram to connect with the community there.

A note about Zoom vs YouTube format

Thank you to all who joined me for January's Zoom experimentation. I received a lot of feedback from folks who enjoyed the community interaction on that platform, and I also received feedback from folks who preferred the classic YouTube lesson.  This month's Live events will return to our more straight-forward YouTube format, and we will save Zoom for more focused interactive events, like Patron-led jams.  I'd also like to host a Patron mini-fest and open mic down the line.  Please comment if you'd be interested in helping with the more interactive events!

If you are looking for Zoom jams, see below for Zoom events led by our Patron Community Managers and other community leaders.  If you are hosting a Zoom event and would like to invite Patrons to join, feel free to post the info in the comments.  You can also message me at the end of the month to be included in the monthly newsletter.

See you online soon!

xo cynthia 🌺

To find a specific song or lesson, learn to use the updated Cynthia Lin Song Index.  Thank you to the Community Managers for creating and maintaining this helpful resource.

If you have more questions about Patreon, I encourage you to post your questions to one of our Community groups (our private Facebook group is particularly active -- email patronhelp@cynthialin.com with your Facebook email address to be added). We’re learning “The Wave” this month? Yay! 😃

Cynthia Lin

hey shelley! not sure yet how i’ll shape the bossa nova lesson, but it seems there’s a lot of interest in “Wave” so i’ll try to incorporate it :)

diags

Hi I'm new - Marc in San Francisco area. Been playing 1 month. Rocking my Flight tenor uke. Like to arrange and play mostly rock songs. Trying Creep by Radiohead based on Cynthia's arrangement but adding some of my own to it as well. Great stuff on YouTube and looking forward to trying Live Jams.

Sara Smothers

I've read the newsletter. Thank you I will put on my Calender. I have a granddaughter graduating from high school later in the month of in North Carolina but plan to bring my Uke & get some practice in. I will post soon. I am learning slowly but surely. I have a habit of jumping around from song to song. I want to learn a song all the way through & perfect it. I will post whatever I have so far & show progress made.Thank you for all your Encouragement, Great Song choices & Patience with all of us.💜🙂Sincerely Sara Smothers

Grace Gemert

l am Grace from The Netherland, I've been playing the Uke for 3 month. I have a Ortega Tenor uke. I can play along The Lion sleeps tonight and is practising the chucking now. It's still hard to sing and play at the same time😅

CherylAoife

Hi from Cheryl in Mariposa, CA! I bought myself a Donner tenor uke for Christmas and loving it so far! We have an active Ukeladies & Gents group here and I hope to join them in the near future. Love your lessons, Cynthia!

Tim Waite

Hi from Tim in Deal, Kent UK. I've been playing the Uke for a month or so after picking it up again after a 12 month lay off. Had lessons with a tutor for 6 months it got me started but felt it put me under pressure which I didn't want. I spent a few months searching the net to find a replacement tutor but on line. Cynthia your brilliant...suits my style of learning. Also you're very clear in your explanation, you enjoy what you are doing and always smiling which is great. I feel I am slowly improving however only time will

Tim Waite

oops sorry.... finger trouble just like my attempts at playing the Uke... meant to add..... tell if I can call myself a Ukulele player. . I agree with grace its hard to play and sing at the same time... guess it will come with practice. Great lessons Cynthia. Cheers Tim

Charmian Heaton

Hi from Charmian in the Lake District UK. I have been playing for a couple of years but am so pleased to have found the Cynthia Lin community. Such good fun and inspirational. Maybe we should try to form a Cynthia Lin UK Facebook group to share experiences?

Vanessa Ruppert

Hello, I am Vanessa from Germany. I started playing 2 years ago with the Cynthia Lin you tube tutorials and now finally decided to join this lovely community of patreons. I am especially working on fingerpricking and tab reading at the moment.

Sarah Austin

Hi I’m Sarah from Tennessee in the United States. I just started playing the ukulele in January! I’ve learned the Lava Song thanks to Cynthia’s tutorial and am now working on Riptide and learning to chuck! 😊

Ellen Piwoz

Hello, I am Ellen from Annapolis MD. I am a “Quke” - bought an inexpensive Kala uke back in May and have been teaching myself via YouTube. It’s definitely time for more structure and fun. Working on The Boxer, Hey Jude, and Ho Hey this week.

Stefanie Oepen

Hi, I'm Stefanie from Germany and I have been playing the uke since last March, learning with different YouTube tuorials and chords/tabs I find online. I play two slightly different Mahalo soprano ukes and usually work on specific songs. I started with songs in G and C that I could work with a D - DU -UD - (U) strumming pattern and went from there into different picking and strumming patterns. Currently trying to learn songs in the key of F / barre chords. The first song I learned with a barre chords was The Boxer based on Cynthia's tuorial. My general approach is: find a song I like, see if I know or think can learn the chords, try out different strumming/picking patterns until I have one that fits and go from there. I practice daily, but not always long. Haven been trying for ages to figure out Melissa Etheridge's You can sleep while I drive and recently discovered that Travis picking works so I'm trying to learn that. The other song currently on my list is Del Amitri's Nothing every happens and changing from F to Bb is killing me.

Cynthia Lin

fun! practicing deliberately and slowly is the best way to truly improve. thanks for being here!

Cynthia Lin

welcome, Tim! everything comes with practice. i've been practicing my whole life and continue to practice everyday!

Cynthia Lin

hi Charmian! thanks for staying up late with us to attend the live sessions. if you would like to take the lead in forming a UK squad, i think it would be fun to start building that community. we can message on facebook.

Cynthia Lin

aloha, Stefanie! you've covered lots of material, and figuring out songs on your own is the best way to hone your skills. thanks for joining us!

Laura Woz

Hello!! I'm new and my name is Laura from Ontario, Canada. I got my first uke for Christmas and otherwise don't know any instruments, so it has been a lot of fun to get into! My uke is a tenor from a small music shop, who told us it was originally from Vietnam, but I otherwise don't know much about it. I had a ton of fun at the recent beginner community jam. I've otherwise gone through Cynthia's first set of beginner tutorials and am now trying to learn finger picking and chucking. Looking forward to more!

Caitlyn

Hoping the Zoom format comes back for the lessons. Was something I greatly looked forward to during the pandemic. It was so nice to connect with others when it is hard to connect with quarantines and beint unable to hangout with people! Looking forward to participating in more lessons!

Angelica Paiso

Hello, My name is Angelica from Hayward, CA. I've been playing ukulele for almost a year now this coming March. My uke that I play with is a tenor Manea. Currently, I'm trying to learn how to read tabs and finger picking. One of the songs I'm learning to play is Tears In Heaven. Cynthia Lin, you're an amazing teacher and I have learned so much from your tutorials! Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us!

Michele Ono

Hi my name is Michele and I am from California but many of my relatives are still in Hawaii and play the uke. I am very late to the fun. I started 37 days ago 😂, as one of my "goals of 2021"! I bought my uke on Dec 31st and have been practicing about 30 min a day, watching your beginner lessons. Obviously, have a LONG way to go, but am enjoying the journey, the practice and feeling joyful about music. I am 58 years old and have never played any instrument my entire life. So, this is a pretty big leap for me 🤪! Cynthia, you are an amazing instructor, I truly am enjoying all of the videos and your help, and I could not be more thankful for everyone here as a support group (you guys are inspiring too!) ❤️ P.S. I can only play three songs so far......... and the island strum is easier than the swing strum. Not sure why.

Carol Anderson

I have played the guitar for most of my life but got a ukulele a few years ago because I thought it would be convenient to take to my Religious Classes and play for the kids. Having played guitar it has made the ukulele easier. But it sure is nice to have your great tutorials. I love playing along and my husband gets a kick out of your dog in the Hungry Like the Wolf play along.

Tom Cox

Aloha from Colorado Springs. Just started the ukulele have been playing mountain dulcimer for some time. Thanks for the great lessons.

Cynthia Lin

hi Caitlyn! we'll find ways to have more Zoom events. i especially liked having Patrons lead songs in the jams.

Cynthia Lin

the island strum has a natural sway and rhythm that's familiar. glad you're jumping in, welcome!

Melinda Palacio

Hello, I’ve been playing for almost two years and I am looking for folks who live in either Santa Barbara, Ca or New Orleans. I’ve been going the YouTube route for guitar and ukulele lessons. It would be great to one day play in a group. Cynthia, I’m wondering if you’ll ever give guitar tutorials. I would also love to go to a festival in Hawaii. I hope to jump in on the 100 days, I missed the beginning. I recently saw your easy breezy with Lenny and I love both of your energies such positive aloha spirit. I’m fanning over both of you. Cynthia, I love the video of you singing and dancing on the beach, life/uke goals.

Jenny Selig

So cool, Tom! My dad made a mountain dulcimer when I was a kid, and I love the sound.

Lynda Sully

I’ve been playing for a couple of years now. Pretty much taught myself and then found you on YouTube!! Thank you for all the wonderful lessons. I’m really looking forward to more!

Anthony Coates

Hi, I'm a new patron. I've been playing the uke (poorly) for probably a decade now, but always looking for something to inspire me to improve. Lockdown has been a pain with the local ukulele group not being able to meet for the last year. I only have the one uke, a Risa Tenor Solid electric uke that requires me to carry around a small amp as well.

Suthi Picotte Nagar

I just joined Patreon... joined to be part of your community. I started learning ukulele in April. Looking forward to learning more.

Lisa Besman

Hi - I got my Magic Fluke Flea ukulele for Christmas and recently joined Patreon. I'm trying the 100 day challenge - currently on Day 6 about to check out the CL Song Index.

John Roads

John here from the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. My partner and I bought concert Ranch ukuleles 1.5 years ago and I recently restrung my partner's uke with a wound low-G string so we could play a bigger variety of songs. We even bought all my sisters ukes last year and have been doing weekly Zoom meetups since the pandemic started to all practice together. My partner is a Yamaha keyboard teacher and integrates music theory once in awhile. We're doing well with strumming and chucking, but just coming up-to-speed with finger picking. Your tutorials are so helpful and we love your awesome personality!

Keriann Wiester

Hi! I'm Keri and I live in Kansas City, Missouri and I'm new to the Patreon Family. I picked up the ukulele in August 2018 when I became a children's librarian to help enrich my storytimes, but now I enjoy playing more for myself than my storytimes! I have enjoyed teaching myself through Cynthia's YouTube videos. I have become a bit of a ukulele hoarder, and have six. The one I am playing the most right now is my Kala Striped Ebony Tenor. This instrument has brought me so much joy, and I'm happy to finally take a step to become active in the ukulele community!

Veronica Robertson

Hello! I'm currently living in Montreal, Canada and purchased a ukulele (Kala concert uke) very spontaneously on January 16, mostly because I love signing and thought it would be great to accompany myself and others. I very quickly found your incredible tutorials and have been playing a few hours every day. Your teaching style is brilliant - I really appreciate your pace and especially the tips you have for chord progressions! I'm now working on Space Oddity, and can play all parts, even the break (wheeeeeeee, what fun!!!), but I find it so challenging to sing while playing the rock strum - all that's going through my head is D-DdU-ud-dudu!!! So much appreciation for all the light you bring into the world!

Mareike Erlmann

Hi, I'm Mareike from Austria and quite spontaneously bought my first ukulele (a Flight soprano ukulele) between Christmas and New Years, so I am still an absolute beginner. I enjoy discovering that great instrument since then practicing with your tutorials almost every day. You are a really great teacher, Cynthia, thanks a lot for all the helpful material! I also had a lot of fun at the Easy Breezy Uke Jam session with Ukulenny, you guys really rock :) Looking forward to the next session!

Harla Norman

Hi everyone, I'm Harla and live in the SF Bay Area.I'm new to learning the ukulele and loving it! I surprised my husband with his tenor ukulele that I have now adopted! It's been pure joy learning an instrument that sounds good even as a true beginner. My first love was I'm Yours, which I continue to practice. Cynthia, I really appreciate your upbeat personality in teaching and you have a lovely voice! This has brought much joy during this pandemic. I have trouble picking up the strumming but know it will get easier with time.

Nancy G

Hi, I'm Nancy from San Francisco and I've been playing the uke as a beginner for 8 years now. I haven't gotten any better in the last couple of years, so I joined so I can improve. I've attended several uke jams when Cynthia lived here in SF, and always had a fabulous time. I'm hoping joining as a patreon gets me to pick up my Magic Fluke Flea uke regularly. I've also recruited a friend in the neighborhood to join and play with me as well. Everything is more fun with company. I look forward to being a part of this community.

Coco Vee

Hi, I'm Chloe. From the UK. I've only been playing about 3 weeks and I'm already hooked. I used to play guitar back in my teens but was never very disciplined, I think that's helped me to pick it up relatively quickly. Very glad to have found this community. Thank you Cynthia.

Yonatan Nitzan

Hey everyone.. my name is Yonatan Nitzan and i'm from israel. I've been playing for for about 10 months, ever since the first quarantine started. I saw an ad on facebook of ukulele and decided to get one and start. I've been following cynthia for a while, and finally become a patron:) Hopefully i will get improved and have fun! Tnx...

Dawn Feltrop

Hello! I am Dawn Feltrop from Kansas. One year ago I purchased my first ukulele and fell in love with it. My ukulele is my friend as it has helped me get through so much this past year and it brings my heart so much joy. I found Cynthia on YouTube and she taught me how to play and sing-a-long (I had no idea how challenging it would be to train my brain and hands to work together!) Thank you Cynthia for creating this community and for being such a wonderful teacher. I appreciate your time, hard work and preparation for the lessons. Thank you and I am excited to become a patron to learn and enjoy playing my ukulele.

Kathy Meyerson

I started Ukulele through our local community college 2 day class about six years ago. I joined a local "jam" group three years ago. However, the 100 Day Project has really helped me grow and that is how I learned about you and becoming a patron. Thank you for your kind, loving, fun, and focused approach to teaching. I'm excited and have decided to raise the bar on my ukulele playing and singing. Thank you again! :)
