Aloha, Patrons!

April is upon us, and with this month's newsletter I'd like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new Patrons.  New Patrons, please see resources later in this post for help getting started in our community.

Building a Community of Aloha

Over the course of the pandemic year, I have come to see more clearly the impact that I want to have as a Community leader beyond teaching ukulele.  Through this community, we are bringing together people from all over the world to share music and to walk side by side in our ukulele journeys.  Especially during this tumultuous year, building connections with uke friends across the globe provided a sense of comfort, peace, and hope.  I believe that a more compassionate world can exist, and this community is a living, breathing example of that dream.  Thank you for being here, for lifting each other up, and for extending your knowledge and support and care to each other.

To sample this outpouring of aloha on a daily basis, I invite you to check out our 100 Days of Ukulele Project on Instagram and/or Facebook.  Every day folks are sharing ukulele videos, posting supportive and encouraging comments, and making steady, incremental progress over the 100 Day challenge.  (Be sure to watch our Day 50  "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" Flash Mob featuring Jake Shimabukuro and 130+ participants from the project!)  If you're curious to see what the project is about, or just want a dose of inspiration, join the Facebook group and check it out.  All are welcome to cheer on the participants, and you can even start the project now, or get mentally prepared for joining next time.  Check out this link for more info, read the FAQ, and follow #100DaysUke2021 on Instagram to connect with the community there.  Congratulations to all the participants for making it to Day 65!  Keep going!!

Want to get involved?  Over the next couple of months, I'll be asking for your input on how we can create more opportunities for community interaction.  Group challenges, app development, chat groups on other platforms, live events, community service - let's explore the possibilities.  If you'd like to get involved, if this community is meaningful to you and you'd like to give back, then step up and we'll get you in the mix.  You can also attend the upcoming regional live events (more about that below) to get a sense of how they're run, and meet some of the community members who lead and attend those events.  If life is busy, no worries - simply by being here, you are supporting the community.   Feel free to comment below if you have an idea for community growth that you want to share now.

Adding Regional Zoom Jams and Open Mics to the Patron calendar

Another product of the pandemic is the expansion of Zoom Open Mics and Jams hosted by our Patron Community Managers and Regional Squad leaders, including events specifically for GMT/UK/Europe and Asia/Australia time zones.  Thanks to the organizers for opening up these events to your fellow Patrons!  In addition to our monthly Patron events, we'll now add these Zoom events to our Patron Google calendar (also accessible through our Patron App).  The Zoom events allow you to connect with a smaller group of uke players - check out the list of events below, and feel free to reach out to the organizer to find out more and introduce yourself.

If you are hosting a Zoom event and would like to invite Patrons to join, feel free to post the info in the comments.  You can also message me at the end of the month to be included in the monthly newsletter.

A Final Community Jam to wrap up our pandemic year

Thanks to everyone who joined us for last week's hilarity-filled Disney-themed Community Jam - get the Songbook and watch the replay here.  Any favorite moments?  Drop them in the comments below! 😂 Shoutout to Ukulenny for making all the animated magic happen!

Ukulenny and I started livestreaming together in March 2020 when the lockdowns began, and it's been a huge tech journey learning to sync audio together in real time, while also syncing green screen video.  (We are still learning!)  With the world starting to open up (and honestly, it was so nice to play together with Lenny in real life in January and February when he was in Hawaii), I've decided to make this month's Community Jam the last one for our pandemic year.  As a way of closing this chapter, let's look back at the musical highlights of the year.

What songs got you through the pandemic?  Comment below with suggestions for our final Community Jam songlist.  One that comes to mind for me is "Dancing in the Moonlight."  Learning to create green screen video for the first time and shooting with my fur-babies, it felt like a moment of inspiration during a weird, creatively restrictive time.

Going forward, I do plan on having livestreams for special occasions (like we did for YAY!300K and the annual Holiday Jams pre-pandemic).  You can watch the replays for the full year via this Community Jams Playlist, and find all the livestream songbooks  here.  All the Songbooks are made available to the public for free with the support of the Patrons - so a big thanks to all of you for helping me and Lenny create these online community events during a time of social distancing.

And I have to give Ukulenny all the credit for figuring out the technological solutions so that we could virtually play together.  As performing musicians, it truly was our lifeline, and I'll be forever grateful.  Find info on all his Zooms and virtual events via his site and social media channels, which he's planning to continue.  Still, jamming online can't hold a candle to playing together in-person, and we're looking forward to returning to that reality soon!

Spring Uke Fest, hosted by Bernadette - free for all Patrons!

Popular Uketuber Bernadette of Bernadette Teaches Music is hosting a Spring Uke Fest via Zoom, featuring workshops and performances from a variety of YouTube ukulele teachers. This event is available only to our Patreon members, as a thank you for your continued support.  Save the date: Saturday April 17 and Sunday April 18 from 12pm PT to 4pm PT (Los Angeles Time Zone).  I'll be the last performer on Saturday, more details and Zoom links to come.

Update for How to Join our secret facebook group

Facebook has changed the way we can add folks to the group - apologies if you requested to be added and haven't been added yet.  Please Like the CL Community Managers Page and send a message through the page to request to be added.  The secret Patron group is a great place for asking questions (about Patreon, or ukes, or anything in between) and sharing videos of your progress.

Thank you for reading.  I'll look forward to seeing you online soon!

New patron here from Brasil. Cynthia has been my only uke teacher ever since my teen son convinced me that I would be capable of learning an instrument af almost 50 years old. I have been practicing for 1 year and I'm currently working on Space Oddity :) Very thankful for all the tutorials.

Eileen Thomas

Greetings from Delaware, USA. You are my favorite teacher; I love the "Aloha Everyone " and the flower in your hair! Please restock your merchandise so that I may proudly spread the word! Thanks so much.

Naomie Duijnstee

Hi i am a New patreon, my name is Naomie and i am from Holland. I started playing the uke last year around september . Proud owner of a soprano, concert and tenor (just arrived today). Thanks a lot for all the great lessons online 😃

Clara

I would be interested in the events organized by the Pacific Northwest Squad but the links are broken, can someone share the FB page?

Frank Aguirre

Hello from So. Cal. I’ve no musical background and first picked up a soprano in Feb of 2021. My wife and I celebrated our 29 year anniversary and she encouraged me to finally do what I’ve always wanted to, learn to play an instrument. This is my first musical instrument, I’m addicted, I now own 5! Currently working on -DEATH WAS ARRESTED & -HOUSE OF GOLD Thanks Cynthia for sharing your gift of teaching.

Jenny Selig

Clara, turns out those links work only if you join the 100 Days of Ukulele FB group first. Sorry!

Angie McCurdy

Hello from rural Ontario, Canada! I just joined Patreon, and started playing a concert Ohana about 6 weeks ago, after it had sat in the cupboard for 10 years. There aren’t any local uke groups that I am aware of, so the online groups are a good option for me. I have done your free YouTube lessons, and really enjoyed them. Thanks for creating an online destination for learning and community!

Christine G

Angie McCurdy, I had a like experience, I had a ukulele that sat unused for over a year before I discovered Cynthia Lin. She was the one who made learning ukulele so much easier. I think her chord charts are the absolute best.

Caitlyn

I would love to somehow be more involved...community mod, providing support to the super newbies (the under 3 monthers), etc. Anyway I can be more involved with this uke community would be great! I'd love to give back somehow for all the help and support I have received.

Lissette Ramirez

Hi! I’m new here 😊. Ive got my first ukelele this valentine’s day and thats when I started to play. Its a concert uke and I love it! I have been practicing Lava (disney/pixar), Brown Eye Girl and working hard on I See the Light from Tangled. Hardest part of that song for me is getting from F to Em! 😩

Angela Lee Chen

We host a Uke round robin every other Friday on Zoom - fairly beginner, but all are very welcome! Called Zoomulele, 4-5.30pm EDT... contact babazoom77@gmail.com for more details!

Maggie

LoVe love the ukulele days art the most!!! We need some more of that beautiful foliage ukulele! So beautiful in a world of uke shirts that are usually more cartoony! Please restock!! 🥰😍

Anna Booy

Hi there! I'm Anna from Sydney. I have a concert uke which I bought years ago because it was pretty! I've been playing it badly off and on for around 5 years but Cynthia's lessons combined with a pandemic filled year have helped me to get real traction and improve quite a bit. I've just become a patron and like everyone else, want to thank Cynthia, her team and friends for their generosity of spirit and continued vision. World Peace and Understanding through Ukulele!

Sue Zimmerman

I loved the Disney Uke Jam, Thank you to Cynthia and Lenny for providing all the fun. I'm busy working on all the Disney songs. Very excited about Bernadette's Spring Uke Festival. Yay!!!

Dorian Davis

I loved the Disney Jam and am sad to learn this month's jam with be the last monthly jam. But I totally understand and it makes sense since life is getting more back to normal. I am looking forward to hopefully attending some uke jams and festivals in the future! As far as songs for the last jam, I love the idea of Dancing in the Moonlight! This song definitely helped provide good vibes during the pandemic. I'd also suggest Champagne Supernova (though it didn't really help me through the pandemic) but Yesterday by the Beatles did as well as Here Comes the Sun did (which I think would be an appropriate send off for the last pandemic jam) I'd love to get involved in the community whether it be community service, regional live events, chat groups on other platforms, etc. However I can help and spread the aloha in the community I am happy to be of service in any way possible! Thanks so much for all you do and for providing us with all the community jams, aloha and a wonderful growing uke community during this pandemic Cynthia! You are a light to us all!

Karen

Hello from Germany! I play the ukelele since Febuary 2020, and as a total newbie to ukuleles started with a soprano with a poly body (that, durable as it is, now accompanies me in my car, so I'm prepared for traffic jams), but soon bought two new, wooden concert and soprano ukuleles. I joined a really nice local group for weekly lessons (meeting online at the moment due to the pandemic). The ukes bring so much joy into my everyday life. I made new friends, and show my kids how much fun it ist to learn to play an instrument. And, what is most important for me, it is good for my brain and good for my soul ;-) Thank you, Cynthia, for all free YouTube lessons. I learned a lot and am very happy to be a Patron now.

Cynthia Lin

olá, fernanda! bem-vinda! (i'm learning some portuguese as part of my 100 day project!)

Cynthia Lin

Thanks, Eileen! I'll work on that restock. :) And agreed, Maggie - I'm trying to elevate the level of artistry in uke shirts as much as I can!

Cynthia Lin

hi Caitlyn! thanks so much! you can join the CL newbies group and answer some questions there if you like. glad you want to get more involved!

Cynthia Lin

hi Dorian! we love having your generous spirit in all of our groups - thank you!! Here Comes the Sun is fitting, as we hopefully see some brighter days ahead. I'll keep it in mind. :)

Rhonda Johnson

Hi! New patron from Colorado Springs CO. Still just a newbie player, started in April 2020 learning by watching lots of youtube videos by Cory Teaches Music and just recently came across the Cynthia Lin videos! Having fun learning with my partner at home but haven't found any local groups yet. I am loving the new Enya Tenor Uke lately, but also have a couple of sopranos - one wood and one red enya poly. Working on Landslide right now - gotta get my fingers coordinated enough for the picking pattern : )

Angela Lee Chen

The core group is based in Myrtle Beach, SC, but many who attend are from all over - some of them used to spend winters here, others have joined since moving into Zoom!

Tawsha Wilson

Hello! New patron from Littleton CO! Still learning on my new uke since Christmas. I LOVE all the videos and lessons! My fingers are callused & I love it. I am working on You've Got a Friend to play for my friends 50th in May... The intro is hard as I can't find the tutorial on how to read it... Thank you thank you!

Lynne M Opstad

Hi, I'm a newbie from Alaska. I've joined your last couple of live jams- so fun! I've learned a lot since starting to play 5 months ago, thanks for your instructive lessons. I've been invited to join a local group so even more fun coming....

Jenny Selig

Welcome! You might want to start with Cynthia's video on how to read tab, if you haven't read that before. How to Read Tab // Ukulele Tutorial - YouTube

Launawe Jaffee

Hi, My name is Launawe (I go by “Lana”) and I am a new patron from Minnesota. I started with a cheap Amazon ukulele kit 6 weeks ago. I completed the 6 Cynthia Lin beginner YouTube tutorials and just this week upgraded to the Ohana Cynthia Lin concert ukulele (I got the beginner to intermediate player model). I used to play violin but I haven’t played in years. I’m excited to be playing music again!

Ina

Hello from the Philippines! I’m a new Patreon. I started playing a year ago. I took uke lessons at a music school, then covid hit and we had to stop the face to face classes. Thank you so much Cynthia for all the online lessons. I really learned a lot!

Sue Schuster

Hi from Michigan. I LOVE everything about this ukulele community and will be happy to help with anything I can. I bought my first ukulele in Dec, 2017 when I turned 70 and read I should learn something new. I found Cynthia’s first six lessons on YouTube and enjoyed her easy way of teaching and upbeat spirit. I was lucky to learn she, Ukelenny and Abe were coming to Michigan in May, 2018 for Mighty Uke Day 8. Although I had not mastered much I soon felt welcomed and encouraged by everyone I met - including Cynthia, Lenny and Abe. I now own both CL ukes plus four more. 🤗. Although I’m not brave enough to post during the 100 days I find joy in playing and watching all who post. Great job everyone!! Aloha!

Lisa Shaker

From Chicago. I have been playing for about 8 months. I have been watching some of your tutorials on you tube and i enjoy them so much. looking forward to learning some new songs and new ways to play.

Janice Collins

How can I help in the community events? Its been a very fruitful almost 4 years on this musical journey and I would love to give back. I have marketing, brand management, event coordinating, sales and IT experiences.
