{$5+ Patron-only post --> now available for all Patrons!}

Aloha, Patrons!

I'll see you Thursday, January 20 at 5:30pm Pacific Time for our monthly Live Lesson.  If you click on the video above, you’ll see a countdown for your time zone. (Find all Patron events on our Patron Google calendar).

Tune in here: https://youtu.be/NCGBzW8giJs

Join our pre-class Zoom Social

If you're free before the lesson begins and would like to meet and chat with other Patrons on Zoom, I wanted to gather Patrons for a Zoom Social from 5:00 to 5:25pm.  (We'll end the Zoom before the lesson, and still go to YouTube for the lesson).  This is the first time we're trying this, so let's see how it goes!  For new Patrons, you can meet Patrons and ask questions.  For longtime Patrons, you can get to know your fellow Patrons a bit more.  Share the songs you're currently working on, find our more about the 100 Days Project, connect with fellow Patrons from across the world.  It will be casual, you can drop in anytime, and we'll use the Zoom breakout rooms to move into smaller groups for chatting.  Click here to go to the Zoom Social, or use Meeting ID: 838 9209 8471, Passcode: aloha.

Please comment if you're planning to join the Zoom Social, or you're interested in helping out with more Zoom Socials in the future.  Also, could use a clever or punny name for it. 😄 Hope to see you there!

This month's Live Lesson: "Island in the Sun" by Weezer, in 2 keys

This song has long been popular with ukulele players, and I adore Weezer, but I've never officially taught it because the original key is a bit too low in my voice.  For our Live Lesson, I've decided to teach it in 2 keys, the original key in Em (hear Weezer's original version here), and the key that works better for me, which is Gm (hear my version from tonight's 5@5).  The syncopated strumming pattern is the same for both arrangements, and beginner players might find the chords of the original key easier to play.   Please download both charts.  We'll start with Em, and then move to Gm.

Please look for the orange PDF link below - the PDF should download immediately when you click on it.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

How to Watch Live

1. Click on this direct link to the lesson: https://youtu.be/NCGBzW8giJs

For those who are new, please note this is a private link, intended for Patrons only.

2. Log in to YouTube to join the live chat, and please say hello!  I can't see that you're watching unless you chat.  If you have trouble using chat on a mobile device/ tablet, you may want to try on a desktop or laptop browser.

3. Feel free to post your questions to me, or to the community.

How to Watch Later

1. Watch the video linked above (it's the same as the live link).

2. Feel free to post your comments and questions below.

Missed the live lesson but I've been playing a version of this song for years, so I was pumped to get Cynthia's arrangement and style to help me play this jam even better! Thanks for the awesome arrangements and lessons again, Sensei! Both versions are fun!

Hi Cynthia! I really enjoyed this lesson. Thank you! Can you please do a tutorial of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac and Tiny Dancer by Elton John?

@byjessicaaguado

You have no idea how happy I am right now, for being able to play it 🤩 I’ve never played anything… never ever! I also never thought that I could do any kind of song “in the rhythm”… you classes are amazing! Thank you so much for doing that, for your time and pacience. You are a legend teacher and an amazing artist!

Suzan OBrien

How about a tutorial on In the beginning by emerson lake and palmer? or maybe just a source for the music and lyrics

Theresa Serrant-John

Hi: I missed most of the live sessions, but I'm trying to catch up. Your sessions are super helpful. I'm tugging along.

Nasti Hase

Great lesson! Thank you!

Greg Turner

Daft question but where does the "hip hip " fit in?? Is it after the G before the Am again or half and half or on the G or on the Am?
