Aloha, Patrons!

Our July All-Levels Live Lesson is Thursday 7/21 at 2:30pm Hawaii Time / 5:30pm Pacific Time (Find all Patron events on our Patron Google calendar).

Tune in here: https://youtu.be/Dw8a8BBiPGc

If you click on the video, you’ll see a countdown for your timezone. If you can't join in live, the recording will be available to replay on YouTube, at your convenience. Instructions for joining via YouTube are below.

This month's Live Lesson: "Hotel California" by The Eagles

Let's start with a review of last month's lesson: "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley.

I'm excited to finally teach this song to the Patrons - for years, the Eagles had blocked all use of this song on YouTube, with the threat of channel deletion. (There's a live class lesson of this song that I shared with the Patrons, but I had to clip out any use of song in order to post it).  Apparently, the Eagles legal team have finally relented, so now we can play the song without fear of copyright strike!

We jammed on this song at Summer UkeSplosion, and my version is heavily inspired by Ukulenny's version.  I do adapt the song with a fingerpicking intro, and a syncopated strum on the outro to amp up the energy.  Beginners can stick with the strumming pattern, and intermediates can attempted the riffs, mutes, and variations.  I also include chord inversions on the final outro phrase using the numerical chord notation - for example, (2003) represents the frets you'll press for (GCEA).  I'll explain in the lesson.

Want a sneak peek of the play-along video?  I'll release it after the live lesson.  Feel free to comment and give it some early love! :)

Please look for the orange PDF link below - the PDF should download immediately when you click on it.

Join our Pre-Lesson Zoom Social

If you're free before the lesson begins and would like to meet and chat with other Patrons on Zoom, join me before class for a Zoom Social from 2:00 to 2:25pm.  (We'll end the Zoom before the lesson, and still go to YouTube for the lesson).  For new Patrons, you can meet Patrons and ask questions.  For longtime Patrons, you can get to know your fellow Patrons a bit more.  Talk about your ukes, share the songs you're currently working on, and connect with fellow Patrons from across the world.  It will be casual, you can drop in anytime, and we'll use the Zoom breakout rooms to move into smaller groups for chatting.  Click here to go to the Zoom Social, or use Meeting ID: 876 1498 3301, Passcode: aloha.

Please comment if you're planning to join the Zoom Social, or you're interested in helping out with more Zoom Socials in the future.  Hope to see you there!

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

How to Watch Live

1. Click on this direct link to the lesson: https://youtu.be/Dw8a8BBiPGc

For those who are new, please note this is a private link, intended for Patrons only.

2. Log in to YouTube to join the live chat, and please say hello!  I can't see that you're watching unless you chat.  If you have trouble using chat on a mobile device/ tablet, you may want to try on a desktop or laptop browser.

3. Feel free to post your questions to me, or to the community.

How to Watch Later

1. Watch the video linked above (it's the same as the live link).

2. Feel free to post your comments and questions below.

I can't find the lesson for Hotel California, just the play along. The link just takes me to Redemption Song. Is it still up and available to $1 patrons? Thank you for your great content!

Louise Arcand

I’m so happy to be back and this arrangement is amazing! You are so fantastic Cynthia! Thank you 💕🌸

Cecile Tue

I think, I need 10 years more for the solo....

Fawn Spady

I’ve been so busy I finally got to the class and I really loved it. Thank you. I can’t wait to work on the Outro real slow and experiment.

Carol Owens

What a beautiful sound! I’m not finding the chord chart..the one to download. I click on pdf to download, nothing happens. Where is “orange link?” (The sound is too special to ignore these lessons just because I’m having trouble navigating. I do now have Google app. Progress….

Jenny Selig

Hi, Carol. If you look at this post https://www.patreon.com/posts/30092134 you will see photos of where the pdf link is, but it sounds like you're finding it but it's not working? If that's the case, are you on an ipad/tablet? Sometimes people have better luck on a desktop or laptop computer. I'm not sure why.

Cicinato

Do you play in low G?

Sylvia R Jung

Hi Cynthia, one of your absolute best songs. I'm chewing on the outro. It sounds like you are using a slightly different strumming pattern in the outro. Dotted 16th on the A, G, F, and Dm, but not the previous strumming pattern for E7, D, and C chords?
