This month's Live Lesson: "We'll Meet Again" by Ross Parker + Hughie Charles

Let's start with a review of last month's lesson: "Both Sides Now," by Joni Mitchell

Ever since I heard the news of the passing of the Queen, I've had the song "We'll Meet Again" running through my head.  It seems like an appropriate time to share it, and I hope it brings solace to those of you who are feeling a loss right now.

This song was first made famous by Vera Lynn during World War II, and become popular again at the beginning of the pandemic when it was referenced by the Queen.  Artists as varied as Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, and She & Him have recorded this song, and my arrangement is inspired by the jazz and rockabilly approaches.  You can check out my version in tonight's 5@5 for reference - I will release an official play-along soon (the link in the chord chart is just a placeholder and does not work yet).

While there are a lot of chords, most are easy to play, and we'll talk about the relationships in the different chord families that will make the chords easier to remember.  I also added some intermediate options, like the walkdown, as well as fun tab lead-ins.

Join our pre-lesson Zoom Social + Patreon FAQ Session with Jenny on navigating the Song Index!

If you're free before the lesson begins and would like to meet and chat with other Patrons on Zoom, join me before class for a Zoom Social from 1:45 to 2:25pm Hawaii Time.  (We'll end the Zoom before the lesson, and still go to YouTube for the lesson).

We'll start at 1:45pm HT /4:45pm PT with a meet-and-greet, and at 2pm HT/ 5pm PT Community Manager Jenny will screen-share a guided walk-through of the Cynthia Lin Song Index spreadsheet, and then open up the chat for Q+A. We will wrap up before the Live Lesson begins at 2:30pm PT/5:30pm PT.  The informational portion of our Zoom session will be streamed and recorded on YouTube, and will be available for replay at your convenience.

Click here to go to the Zoom Social, or use Meeting ID: 876 1498 3301, Passcode: aloha.

If you cannot or would prefer not to join us on Zoom, you can watch the information portion (5-5:25pm PT) live or re-watch it later on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/IlfvIKfVeKU -- remember to log in to YouTube if you wish to ask questions in the Live Chat.

Please comment if you're planning to join the Zoom Social, or you're interested in helping out with more Zoom Socials in the future.  Hope to see you there!

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

How to Watch Live

1. Click on this direct link to the lesson: https://youtu.be/mQgXqPjZXhI

For those who are new, please note this is a private link, intended for Patrons only.

2. Log in to YouTube to join the live chat, and please say hello!  I can't see that you're watching unless you chat.  If you have trouble using chat on a mobile device/ tablet, you may want to try on a desktop or laptop browser.

3. Feel free to post your questions to me, or to the community.

How to Watch Later

1. Watch the video linked above (it's the same as the live link).

2. Feel free to post your comments and questions below.

Shelley Rubzow

Thank you Cynthia for teaching We'll Meet Again this week. As a Canadian I am feeling a loss with the Queen's passing as she has always been a big part of my growing up, singing God Save the Queen at school etc. Sadly I will miss the live lesson tomorrow as I will be travelling but am looking forward to reviewing it when I get back. Aloha to everyone at the live lesson tomorrow. :-)

John Michael North

I have an original record of Vera Lynn singing this song on a 78rpm record. The records were made of shellac not vinyl and they were played on a gramaphone with a metal needle, not a stylus. We had to wind up the gramaphone to play the record, if you wound it too much it would run fast and sound like the chipmunks, if you didn't wind it enough it would slow down part way through the song and need rewinding. It is so much easier these days.

Cherie Pendarvis

Hello, Cynthia and Everyone! I'm new to the community and was sorry to miss the live lesson today, due to work. 'Hope that you all had fun! 'Looking forward to catching up via the recording and to learning. Aloha, Cherie

Charmian Heaton

Thank you Cynthia for teaching this iconic song last night. I usually watch on catch up but felt moved to stay up late and join in live. Totally worth it althoug my eyes are tired today. :-)

Rene Kimray

Kasia Rusiniak

I'm getting caught up on some non-lesson posts and just revisited the song index - thanks, Jenny and Cynthia, for the walkthrough! I'm wondering if it would be possible to add a column for artists' names? Sometimes I think to myself, "Hmm, I wonder if there's a song by so-and-so..." I think it's great info to include and it would be great to search by artist/band. And - I would be happy to help with the input!! I have tons of Excel/Google Sheet experience, and I know they're manual updates. I'd be happy to help plug through - let me know!

Jenny Selig

Hi, Kasia. Thanks for the offer. Send Cynthia a message through Patreon messages and let's chat about it. :)
