{Patron-only post}

aloha Patrons, and welcome to any new uke friends!  it's that time again - let's vote!

i am working on the tutorial for last month's winner Sound of Silence - let's see what song comes out on top this month. :)

if you're a first time voter, read on... otherwise, you know what to do!

HOW TO VOTE:

1. post in the comments below what song(s) you'd like a tutorial for.  please post a separate comment for each song - you can post as many songs as you like, from the list below or from your own wishlist.  check back to see what other Patrons vote for, and you can "heart" their posts to count as a vote as well.

2. voting closes Sunday 3/5 at 11:59pm PST and we'll announce the winner on Monday!

3. on Thursday, 3/9, I'll post the chord chart of the vote-winning song for $3+ Patrons, and we'll have a Live Lesson for the vote-winning song at 5pm PST for $5+ Patrons. (there will be separate posts for each of those rewards)

here are the runner-ups from last month's vote as a place to start.  you are welcome to pick any song!

Have you tried The Ukulele Teacher? He's nowhere near as good of a teacher as Cynthia, but he posts a lot of tutorials & did one for City of Stars. Again, he's not as good in that he doesn't go into enough detail as Cynthia, but he gives a basic lesson on chords & strumming.

Alison Gavin

Omg I've been wanting to do this and wish I could figure it out on my own. Such an awesome song!

Electra Voulgari

Hi Alison, yes, I've seen the Uke Teacher tutorial. I am just curious about Cynthia's take on the song, she is a great teacher!

Bryan Harvey

Time in Bottle, please.......

Aren't people supposed to "heart" what they like instead of creating tons of duplicates?

Cynthia, Can you let us know next voting if you would prefer that we just "like" or "heart" if we are voting for the same song as another person? That part doesn't seem implicit if that's what you want? Thanks!!!! Looking forward to Banana Pancakes and always voting!!! Thanks!

Joshua Green

Can I vote now for whenever next voting is? I'd nominate Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (maybe too ambitious I know), Coldplay's Clocks, and Lady Madonna by Beattles. Hah, just try to beat that for being all over the place!

Joshua Green

Oh, also Stairway to Heaven.

Joshua Green

And Fleetwood Mac, Landslide. Last one I promise!

Carole Germano

Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea (George Harrison)

Joshua Green

I was playing around with the Landslide chords from other tutorials and had an insight: things often don't sound right on uke because the convenient fingerings on uke often result in notes that are in the wrong octave for the chord. Take the Cm chord, for example, We really want a low C (which we can get by plucking C string) but the standard fingering will give us a middle C.

Joshua Green

Oh, I get it! A more polished way to say it is that the uke has a high range and the strings are tuned to pretty close intervals. As a result, it often ends up being easier to play inverted chords than chords with the root note in lowest position. An inverted chord is just one in which the root note is not the lowest note in the chord because other notes in the chord are displaced down an octave or so. Many of our most common uke chord are inverted (F and G for example). This can make for interesting chords or chords that just don't sound right compared to the original score of a song.
