Thanks so much for your support! For serious!

Mele Kalikimaka had been stuck in my head for a week. I apologize if I earwormed anyone else.

In reality, anything involving four possible entries would never give you good security options. (Because there's only four nucleotides found in DNA?) Eight character passwords using only lower case letters can be cracked so quickly today that the time involved is basically negligible, and Deus is talking about something that works out to 64^3 there at the end, which is only 262,144. If each entry can only be G, A, T, or C, then multiply 262,144 by 256, and you get just over 67 million possibilities. A modern computer can rip through that pretty quickly.

However, we're not talking about straight up computational encryption busting. As Dabbler guessed on the previous page, the superion field only reacts to sapience. Having a print out of every combination doesn't do you any good, you have to implement it in something with DNA in just the right sequence. Unless you're a geneticists with just heaps of discards, you're not going to just stumble across this, especially if you're just genetically engineering fruit flies or something else without sapience. Even then, human superpowers don't show up right away. It mostly happens around 8-12 and they take a while to develop.

Edit: As usual, I’ve outsmarted myself and fucked up the math. Deus is proposing a structure that is 64 rings, each comprised of 64 possible entries, each of those entries has 64 levels. Sort of a 4D tumbler, where each “number in the combination” is actually like one of those gym locker locks with 4 rotors, but instead of having 10 numbers, it just has the 4 nucleotides from human DNA. 4 rotors times 4 repeatable entries is 4x4x4x4, right? 4^4 = 256. 64 rings of 64 positions of 64 stacks, or 64^3 = 262,144 possible configurations. Then I just multiplied 256 by 262,144 for ~67 million and change.

BUT, while the above math itself is correct, the “word problem” I used to formulate it isn’t. The problem isn’t 4^4 x 64^3. That would work if we’re talking about turning a dial on a safe where there’s only one right answer per dial. The way I framed it in the comic, ALL 64 entries of 256 possible combinations on ALL of the 64 stacks of 64 disks have to be correct. I can’t even figure out the formula for that, but there’s been more than one suggestion that it’s 4^(64^3). According to the Windows calculator, the result of that figure is “FUCK OFF.” It’s probably one of those “more than the number of atoms in the universe” numbers.

So when Dabbler says “a pretty solid encryption key,” it might be an understatement. Honestly I might have to revise Deus’s figures just a bit, cause that seems a little extreme.

This is all assuming he’s telling the truth, though. :D

What an amazingly unlikely facsimile of evidence for intelligent design, eh?

Of mixed minds of this. If they are talking about how someone altered human genetics back at the dawn of time so that some people would get super powers, great, adds to the mystery of who can encrypt parts of the fundamental elements of the universe. If this means that Deus has learned how to create superheroes with this, boo, hate created super beings.

Your math in your commentary is a bit off. A 262,144 entry long encryption key would be ridiculously good. Having only 4 possibilities for each spot is still 4^262,144 which is way beyond the capability of humans to do any sort of brute forcing. That's the sort of "more possibilities than there are particles of the universe" territory... which is currently accepted as somewhere around 10^82 particles or about 4^136. Which is still ridiculously small compared to the encryption scheme Deus has proposed Current encryption algorithms work on keys that are hundreds to low thousands of bits long. Such as "SHA-256" or "SHA-512" which operate on keys of length 256 and 512 respectively to be secure enough while still being relatively fast to actually perform... And RSA uses keys of length 1024 to 4096 when you absolutely have to be sure it's secure.

i love the moments when something so difficult is easily done by humans and baffles other races which had many more years to study it (ok easily is loosely defined here xD)

Really interesting stuff, just wish it wasn't Dues figuring it out. Heh, and Dabbler's stud earing switched ears. She has so many accessories to keep track of. Worse then a collection of action figures, 'Who did this go to again?'

Tomek Kowal

Dave, can we get full panel 5? Without (or with reduced) projector glare and text bubble? Please, please, please...?

JasonAW3

And with this, Dabbler suddenly realizes that some humans may be far more advanced than anyone suspected... Either that, or Deus paid a LOT for the answers...

Demian Buckle

Did Dues just break Dabbler? Whats funny is that Dabbler has always seemed to have a slight superiority complex thinking of herself above humans relating to intelligence, knowledge and technology, for the most part, she is correct but Dues has just shown that there is always an exception to every rule. Brilliant.

"If each entry can only be G, A, T, or C, then multiply 262,144 by 256..." Um... no... multiply by four. Those arent bits (and even if they were, it would still be wrong :) those are digits. If a single digit can only have 4 values.. that means it's base four. values of equivalent to 0,1,2,3

Andrew

Soo... procreation is basically just math, a form of private key exchange!

Richard Wright

Just one opinion, but next month's bonus art should be Dabbler in that outfit.

Enigma42

So is Dues playing not it with the nose touch or does that mean something else nowadays

Tomek Kowal

GASP OH MY GOD, that little tap is "Right on the nose!".

Ian Birchenough

Dabbler has a Sydney expression! (Enigma, Tapping the side of your nose with a finger is often a 'you know what I mean' or an 'On the Nose' gesture)

Michael Obert

And then that happened . . . I think Dabbler's gonna need a stiff, well, not a drink, but a stiff something to help cope with this revelation

Jay

Head cannon. Comic Dabbler, to be differentiated from Teacher Dabbler in Dave's little educational comics he used to do, has just figured out that the universe is a simulation/comic.

"...using the number of neutrons in each protein as the radius..." I had a rant about the possibility of different isotopes throwing off the epicycloids and thus throwing the nucleotides read way off... And then I check the actual proportions of these isotopes, at least on Earth, and compare them to the number of atoms in each nucleotide, and realize that the odds of any atom not having the typical number of neutrons is fairly low per nucleotide, so as long as the superion field is reading the DNA based on the most common isotopes and not what any particular atom or molecule has then this should be workable. Though this does bring up the question of how/why the field uses the average....

To be fair, given that the cutting edge of (non-superized) earth tech is basically the equivalent of "baby's first circuit board play-kit" for the star-faring civilisations etc, that kind of encryption level doesnt seem excessive at all. I mean consider a species like the zerg or tyranids or the equivalent who can rewrite the dna of their members quite literally on the fly with minor to modest effort... They could probably hack this thing in relatively short order using some kind of metamorphic template mimic mcguffin they brew up themselves. And that's not even considering using magic, divine intervention or other such to just cheat the solution out of a pile of primordial soup.

Tannerbot

I choose to think that Dabbler has seen this before, read the reports over the smoking crater of their civilization and is now wondering if she can stop this from escalating.

eddi_TBH

Whoever designed that built Halo's orbs as a grade school science project.

Crypto8536

Out of curiosity, I found a big number calculator online and ran 4^(64^3). I put the result into a Word document with font size 11 and, because of the calculator, every 3 digits has a space behind it. It's 65 pages long.

Eric Loken

-- According to the Windows calculator, the result of that figure is “FUCK OFF.” LOL! I like that. We had another less profane - and less amusing - version of that we call 10 to the BIG. Although it sounds like in this case, FUCK OFF is more appropriate. -- This is all assuming he’s telling the truth, though. :D Never a safe assumption, AND assuming he knows what he's talking about. The problem with things like this is that it is really easy to get them wrong. Or to put it another way, people have 'found' things that aren't actually there before. But I assume that for the story it is at least a hand drawn facsimile of accurate. Of course, even if you can decrypt it and read whatever it says doesn't mean you can make sense of it, or do anything with it. "According to this we can control this process if we integrate particle 857 into the process at certain points... what the hell is particle 857?"

LaughyTraffy

If I'm understand this right, Deus reply to that is " It would mean that an intelligent entity either created one of the fundamental forces of the universe or was able to alter it on a universe wide scale. So, basically, God." I'm sure you can write t better than can though.

akrasia

...but why would Deus reveal that information? Exclusive knowledge of that is insanely valuable, and would seem to become less so the more widely it is known?

PSadlon

I would just like to note Sydney jokingly called Dabs reaction on the first panel of the previous page.
