Thank you for the support! You guys are awesome!

You know, sometimes the titles to these pages are funny references or portmanteaus or repurposed idioms, and sometimes they're "I can't think of anything better and it's been an hour." It's the equivalent of browsing Netflix for 25 minutes before finally clicking on something that barely surpasses the "I'm sick of scrolling" threshold. I will let you decide which kind this title is.

The equations floating around Deus are actual math I found after googling disaster recovery. Of course, without knowing what all those letters stand for, they're probably not immediately useful. It seems to me that there aren't nearly enough letters and symbols to cover all the needs in math. I mean, sure "c" stands for "the speed of light" in one equation, (which now that I think about it, is probably called "c" because it's one of the few universal constants. Huh. That's probably super obvious but I never really thought about it before.) What was I... Oh, right, so "c" means the speed of light in one equation, then it means "circumference" in another, and "number of accidental circumcisions" in another. Of course, the need to reuse symbols for variables is because we only have so many symbols in Romanized languages, but it makes me wonder if in Chinese equations for stuff like this just use the Chinese symbol? I mean, why memorize the what the fancy cursive "Q" in the equation means if you can just use a symbol that means "population" and instead of "Co" with a superscript "i" and a subscript "j", just use the symbol for "local economic impact" or whatever.

Okay, sure, despite Chinese having ~106K characters, there's probably not a singular one that means "local economic impact" but you get what I mean. And yes, I know I could probably just google the answer to my question, but I imagine the answer is probably no, Chinese math probably doesn't look like a three dimensional sentence, but I think that's a missed opportunity.

ANYWAY. Panel 5 there is just supposed to be a very truncated version of all the stuff going through his mind. He's also considering environmental impact, cost of relocating population, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis prevention, etc. Basically doing a super computer's worth of work, but guided by a creative, organic mind. His conclusion is that overall this is a net positive, but will take some effort to fully deal with.

I do like that his seeming first thought was "Oh, she could've done that, but it wouldn't have been safe", gives the impression that he actually does consider Sydney's wellbeing. Quantified and evaluated in monetary terms no doubt, but the fact it crosses his mind at all is a nice bit of nuance. Also I just assumed the math was a reference to that one meme with the confused woman.

A shiny solution all round? Glossing over the problems? Transparent Decisions?

So, if this becomes a tourist site, would Sidney get the residuals for the money made from the attractions since she actually created the attraction itself?

Fogel

Fun fact: "c" is not (technically) the speed of light. The speed of light c is officially written in Italics. People tend to forget about that though. It's also always a lower case letter. Upper case C can mean whatever.

Deus continues to impress with his amazingly level-headed approach to things. Most heads of state would have screamed about the negatives without ever considering the positives, or evaluating *immediately* post-hoc the pros and cons of alternative measures

Michael Obert

Gotta love the math genius; only makes Deus that much more impressive as a subtle and devastatingly effective supervillain. I mean, what about insurance and actuarial tables isn't evil?

DonnieRamesJio

Now that we know Deus is a Super Intelligence, if he was being honest, its neat to see how his brain works

Ok, probably been commented before, but is Dues supposed to be an organic version or Ultron or Brainiac? He does have a very high level, pragmatic way of thinking and seems to be a "greater good" kinda guy as long as He is in the greater good group.

Stephen Gilberg

My understanding is that "c" stands for "celeritas" rather than "constant."

One thing I passionately despise is armchair experts who condemn the action of the people on the spot and who can find SO MUCH BETTER SOLUTIONS while 1) NOT being under massive emotional/situational stress and 2) having a lot more time to do it in. Sydney did the best she could with what she had, and she could have done a whole lot worse. I am glad to see Deus factored that in.

I wonder if an external bubble is in Sydney's upgrade list. Ahhh, if only the orbs came with a book or a translator, maybe a communicator.

i just don't get why the "glass" is purple... shouldn't it be black or transparent? (sorry if that was already asked)

RoyanRannedos

It's likely why blown glass isn't black: it's being heated with something other than impure molten rock.

Hmmmm........I don't really suffer from that problem. Of course, I have subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu, Funimation, Crunchyroll, and HiDive, so if I'm wanting something different and nothing on one is catching my interest I move on to another, usually after about 10-15 minutes of searching. That said, I have a backlog of shows to work on on nearly all of those platforms, so it is very rare I don't have something specific to go to in short order.

I love Deus doing those calculations and acknowledging the thought process of Sydney's decision.

PucThePlayful

Not sure about anyone else, but for my pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis was the fifth in Google's search suggestions for pneum... That's impressive to me...

Deus is willing to share his toys. That's always a good sign. Even if he has ulterior motives. BTW there's a Sci-Fi movie coming down the pike titled DEUS. Apparently mere mortals meet God near Mars. Looks & sounds a bit like Event Horizon.

Two words for Sydney - Double Bubble

Additionally, a glass section of desert in a dark color would also work as a "natural" location for one of his updraft tower generator arrays. Though power is largely becoming a non-concern for the nation at this point, I'm sure he could find a use for the ummm... cool name... "Shattered Expanse" beyond just looking super rad and selling tickets.

Deus calculating.... processing... processing...

Nice to see Sydney's efforts appreciated, and that he has some concern for her well-being.

Dave, as a retired US Navy Seabee, I could see Max having the idea to leverage a US military/NGO recovery efforts, as it was a US asset that caused the damage. I could also see Deus figuring that out before she does... Anyone else have that thought on here?
