In the comics it was exposure to a special kind of heroin that gave them their abilities. Also at some point the relationship between the two characters started to enter creep factor. Thankfully the TV show didn’t quite go there.

That is very similar to the comic book series, as Cloak needed Dagger's light to push back from being consumed by the Darkforce inside his body.

Cloak-Darkforce Channeling: Cloak can channel Darkforce to create a field of darkness in his general vicinity, usually using his cloak as a focal point to manipulate this darkness, though it can spread well beyond the confines of his cloak. People enveloped by Cloak's darkness feel numbing cold and experience terrifying visions of their own greatest fears and nightmares. Overlong exposure to the darkness can drive people insane.

Thanks for watching this. I remember when it came out how impressed I was by the writing, acting and staging of the first episode. I have to admit I lost interest over the next few episodes as it became slow and a bit unfocused.

I remember reading The Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan which Cloak & Dagger appeared in I think and that's my only comic knowledge of them. I then watched The Runaways and Cloak & Dagger but I don't remember watching the second seasons, I might not have finished the first season of C&D. I watched the first episode or two of The Gifted but wasn't interested in the generic mutant storyline so no idea how that went but that was when mutants were a Fox property so unrelated to everything else.
