So why 4runners? Why not Humvees or suburbans or land rovers or something

Dan George

Because 4Runners are offroad gods.

Plus Toyota is hella prevalent across the pond. And it's glorious. And 4Runner is a god. And Land Rovers (at least new ones) stick out like sore thumbs and aren't worth the expense.

My experience in Iraq was that our primary low-pro uparmored SUVs were Toyota Landcruisers, while we also had access to an Explorer, some Suburbans, and a purple Passat Protect, the Landcruisers were by far the best option in the motor pool for their blend of speed, comfort, on/off road performance, and as an added bonus, they didn't immediately scream "American VIP" like the Subs did. I imagine the 4Runner would be the same way.

Today, I'm seeing Tundras and 4Runners/LC Prado trucks imported into the regions as well as the universal LCs. Personally, I love an LC but once you roll out in a Tundra, that thing is so damn roomy LOL

I loved the Passat Protect (comfy leather seats, tinted windows, excellent AC, very fast with good brakes) but as it was only armored to Euro B4 spec it had limited utility other than making trips in and around the IZ... But if you wanted to go get ice cream at "Ice Pack" and weren't planning on leaving the IZ or hardball roads it was the perfect ride... Nobody had Tundras that I saw, but one of the SF teams near our compound had desert tan Expeditions with lift kits, hood scoops, and push bumpers. We all lusted after those things.

Most of the ones I am referring to are showing up in Kurdistan, Syria and Yemen. The last sweet ass SF truck I saw was a heavily modded Tacoma (not a Hilux!)

Not about what I would do, it's about what's actually being used.
