Andy Lyon

Hey Ben, these videos are great from a 'step-dad speed' player perspective and it would be cool to see you take on some classic 90s Lynch Mob songs like Wicked Sensation or No Bed of Roses

Mace

Awesome. I love the idea and explaination of “flight correction” and can totally pinpoint the bpm where this happens vs where it doesn’t in my own playing due to my limitations my own baked in proclivities.

Erik Berg

This series has legs--thanks for the real encouragement and solid instruction.

Mike Maley

Great song and a killer solo. Took me years to be able to play it and even now I’m still not 100% happy with. Needs more practice and practice

Kasper Beuse Fauerby

Amazing! I think anyone would be happy to get that solo to where you got it. I don't think it's yet 100% like how Gary phrases it (but only Gary can do that). Funnily enough I think the biggest differences were in some of the slow/simple phrases. For example that simple lick immediately after the hell run - you play that very straight, but Gary throws in one of those little "thrills" that he always does. Same with that very first lick - Gary "slurs" the phrase a lot, you play it much more tight and straight.

Diogo Camacho

This was excellent! Gary was such an under appreciated guitar player. Thank you for this! I will still to attempting to master his blues stuff, which is out of this world… 😂

Mark

Absolutely phenomenal stuff Uncle Ben. Genuinely the best attempt I’ve ever seen of this solo. Gary Moore was by far one of the greatest six string slingers ever!

David Brent

Yoda Yoda Yoda Yoda ////// Oo-Rah

Michael Curtis

“Don’t make a GIF outta that..” That made me laugh out loud. 🤦🏼‍♂️🤣 Seriously though, that’s a fun video. I enjoyed that way more than just listening to the song itself. Now, about those Satch songs I mentioned earlier.. lol 😁

Sir TogII

Insane is my verdict. I mean the solo is ridiculous and I didn't even know how ridiculous it was until this video. You have to be pretty damn hard on yourself to not be happy with that attempt. Envy is a mortal sin or whatever but that is what I feel :-D Edit: actually, a suggestion for a challenge would be Petrucci's solo from Invisible Monster. It never got the real credit it deserved but in my opinion the best guitar solo in recent time. Might take you two days...

Heiko Haag

Thanks Ben, it took me almost a month to figure the solo out, listen to it slow, watch the video, finally got it. There was not one correct Transkription in the net till today. Thanks for this perfect work. Do you mind doing more Gary Moore fast Pentatonix

Johan Runesson

" Rise" by extreme! And I would never ever complain about your version of Gary's solo!

Gregg B.

You always make me want to play my guitar. That's why you're my favorite uncle. Also, I've never listened to Gary Moore, so thanks for that! Ever thought of doing a Brandon Ellis solo? I know they are tough, but I think you could do it....

César Neyra

Uncle Ben, How about headed for a heartbreak?

Glenn Lysack

Man I just love Gary. End of the World was my gateway into shred back in the 80's. But suggesting that intro as a challenge for our good buddy Uncle Ben just seems plain mean. Still got the Blues remains one of my favorite CD's - and if you are into GM and or Blues these days most of the solos on that CD are fantastic.

NYCM&AHole

I’m gonna be honest I got into Gary when I was in law school dating a girl who liked blues and his blues is great but I can’t get into the cheesy self serious shit. He’s a good player but he doesn’t wow me like Michael Romeo or Paul Gilbert or Becker or Marty Friedman etc etc. If I want serious or social critiques I’ll listen to megadeth or slayer or carcass. And if I want face melting shred I’ll go to my fellow Finns Alexi Liaho and the kids in Lost Society (the no absolution album got me through an insane transaction).

Nah no way I told him to learn to play children of bodom. If I wanted to be cruel I’d ask him to learn Jeff loomis stuff, rhythm AND leads.

Glenn Lysack
>>139678059

I'd be up for some of that. Love Jeff's playing. That'll ought to keep Ben busy for a bit

Anders Nybakken

Thats a great video! I've been trying to build speed on this for 6 months, still cant do it... Hehe.. But I thought the High E string went 5-6-8-5-6-8-12-8-10-12-13-10-12-13-15-13-15-17-18-15-17-18-20-17-18-20-20bend. Or maybe thats what I want to hear, cuz its a bit easier to play.

The Metal Icarus 02

Awesome! How about 'valley of the kings' solo, all john sykes best bits!

Joao Tavares

Thanks Uncle Ben, this stuff is priceless! Sheds so much light on a number of issues I struggle with. Would love to see you take on a Kim Thayil solo, e.g. the solo on "Tighter and Tighter" off of "Down on the Upside" - although his stuff is probably not that much of a challenge to you I find his choices of phrasing to be some of the most unique I've ever heard, almost jazzy in a hard rock/metal context. Add to that his heavy use of wah in solos, makes it extremely hard to figure out what is actually going on there, but totally worth the workout in my opinion. Thanks again man!

Mike Maley

I think the pinnacle of Gary’s playing is his live from Montreaux 1990 version of the Messiah Will Come Again. Whenever I watch it I always think about chucking all my guitars on a bonfire because what’s the point? 😂

dean mestas

Hey Ben, I have a couple of suggestions for solos that I'd like to see you learn and share: 1. Megadeth - How the Story Ends and Testament - Practice What you Preach

William Byrne
>>139719321

that has to be one of the best performances, live or recorded, ever. And I have yet to see or hear anyone come close to playing it.

John Cullen

Nagasaki by Whitecross. Rex Carroll solo.

NYCM&AHole
>>139666547

Or just extreme’s “he man woman hater” (and no I can’t play it myself so I would like to see how much punishment you have to endure to get that good)

Robert Bjärmyr

Ben, do you think the weird climb is intended or just a result of recording it in studio? I.e, having a few anchor points and simply jumping to those to be on time etc.

Dazza

Epic stuff Ben! I know he played various guitars but did he play this on his Gibson? If so the man is even more legendary to me. A true guitar hero!

MrTriggerhappy
>>139678059

Hell yes. Let's get Uncle Ben learning the solo for No Absolution or Blood On Your Hands 🤘

MrTriggerhappy

Thanks for putting these out Uncle Ben. It's a real show of just how good your system of practising is. I'd love to hear the solo for Blood On Your Hands by Lost Society. They're fairly new, but they're starting to make waves. And goddamn, those Finnish boys can play.

Szabi Kollar

I'm gonna leave this here as well. (same i wrote on yt) THAAANK YOU!!! I've been looking for THIS video since I first heard this solo back in 2004. I've seen sooo many inaccurate versions I almost gave up on learning this. Today I was just thinking about giving it another try... and here you are! THANK YOU UNCLE BEN! Now... can't wait for this one :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTNAxMiavT4

JS

Uncle Ben, are you ok????

JS
>>140059494

Ha! Yes, I meant have you recovered from the brutality of the challenge! Loved this one!

colin keyworth

Thanks for this Uncle Ben, have you seen how used to do the high E string part live with one finger, didn't have the same kick

Łukasz Rysiak

Ben are you sure about this going down? you have a great view in this clip and looks like he is going horizontal pretty quickly https://youtu.be/xsKpazeA5L8?t=165 Also, don't you have the whole tab for the solo transcribed? i came here because i've noticed that you play it differently than it's on UG and looks like i'd have to decode it from your video :(

Andrew Anton

This was what I needed as I have been very lazy for too long. I learned this years ago without actually noticing or realising the changes in pattern types. Your video solidifies the technique required and makes you aware which is very valuable.

JAM

Dirty Fingers is also a great Gary Moore solo

Jonathan Soye

Hi Ben, I've been playing through this video again today. I jnow you say in the video about breaking it down, I've been doing so only using the left hand as well - do you think that is worthwhile?
