I see a lot of people out here who are still mixing their tracks in MIDI, all the way up to the point of release. This is fine, but in a genre that's filled with random modulation, velocity changes, filter movements, and various effects, there's definitely a better way to go about it!

In this video, I address this issue as well as give you guys some solid tips on mixing and how to get better and more consistent results every time. For many of you, this is your weak spot and part of the reason why you joined my Patreon in the first place!

Still Mixing Your Tracks in MIDI?

I see a lot of people out here who are still mixing their tracks in MIDI. That's fine, but I think there's a better approach, especially for ambient music. Trees Can Talk

wow your mix is so simple thank you!! i def need to get better at sound design, i think my issue is bad sounds to start! :(

Are you using eq and compression on the midi tracks? If so do you turn it off before converting to audio? What do you have besides the limiter on the master (main). Lastly, I've never seen a bus on ableton. Can you explain that routing?

Geoff Warren

Great stuff, Chris! You've said before about mixing in audio, but this is a really clear explanation of why to do it; the point about randomised tracks is particularly helpful, as is the ease of then making easy fades. And as for only using three plugins to adjust each track: wow! I'm always worried that I need to do really complicated things in mastering which I don't fully comprehend, so this simpler approach is really encouraging: thanks!

This is my weak spot, and part of why I joined. Indeed. Thanks Chris, I love how your tutorials cover all aspects of the creative process and technical skills to move from a blank template/new project to a finished mix.

Loved this video simplifying the mixing process. Echoing Keith's sentiments, this was also a large reason for joining for me. I especially appreciated this after a big Sunday of mixing and probably complicating things too much :D

James Bochenek

When are you releasing a Book on all your expertise? That would really help me. Something with illustrations would be awesome 😎

A question related to Utliity template - you're saying that you removing bus routes after flatenning and route audio directly to Main - does it mean that these buses (Pad Bus, Synth Bus, etc) are required only before Mixing start?
