Step into the tranquil world of ambient music with me in this beginner-friendly tutorial. In this first part of a three-part series, I'll walk you through setting up everything you need to start creating your own ambient tracks. From building templates to choosing the right reference material, I'll cover the basics of sound design to help you lay a solid foundation for your musical journey.

I'll also show you how to embrace minimalism to craft spacious, emotional soundscapes with just a few elements. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your process, this series will give you all the tools you need to create your first ambient track from scratch. Hopefully you enjoy this one! Let me know how it goes in the comments below.

Special note: I’ve exported both presets I created, and you can download them below. I’ll also bundle them together at the end, so feel free to use them in your own productions.

Cheers and enjoy,

-S1gns

Really enjoy getting back to basics, as I always pick up tips I can incorporate immediately. i’ve been tinkering with my default template lately, so this was super useful. Oh and thanks for the shoutout! Lots of amazing artists on the list!

Daniel Fishman

Excellent tutorial - nicely paced, great detail and explanation. Really looking forward to parts 2 and 3.

Matt

Super Excited for this series. Ironically I have been focusing on learning Pigments, and minimalism, so perfect timing. Feeling inspired!! Thanks Chris, you rock! Playlist is great too.

Herbie Brady

Just what I needed as always! Frequency separation is something I have been struggling with and part one really helped! Much appreciated Chris! Looking forward to the 2 and 3!

Matt Tedeschi

Also pumped about this series. As a newb, I'm curious as to how you worked out the key/scale of the reference track.

ArcadiaOrin

Is there a Logic counterpart to Don's utility template?

Anton Pickard

Great tutorial - love the breakdown and demonstrating the basic components. I got a bit lost when you were doing things in Pigments, as I'd like to understand why you choose one thing over another., as I don't really know al lthat's possible. Of course I need to spend time and figure it out for myself and will do. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for being so inspiring.

Pascal Wynar

I've learned so much in a single lesson, you are a genius, how to make a deep bass with only one OSC and some tricks.. I have seen 4 or 5 times this first tutorial ! Thank you from France for your work.

James Aita

Great video. Learned a ton. I had no idea Pigments had so many FX and capabilities. Thanks!

Jean Mosquea

Can you show how to create this template?

Jean Mosquea

I cant find Dune in Pigment 6. Please advise.

Glynn Hall

Great start to the series, learning a lot.

Thank you Chris

I only have Vital and Serum 2.

kamuzaru

What an amazing or better blasting start with only two tracks. Minimalism is king. :-)

laodawei

Really nice beginning to the series. I can't seem to match the frequency spectrum in Span. Close, but the mids seem to get higher and more concentrated and the highs don't drop off. I'm sure it's not too critical. My track sounds much like yours, so I'm okay with it.

Thank you, Chris. The 'beginning ambient tutorial' is a wonderful masterclass with so many brilliant guides on how to get going. For me, it is a gem. Five Stars.
