June’s three-part series, Understanding Synthesis (from a Modular Perspective), is all about making the fundamentals of synthesis more approachable and useful for your own music. Whether you're new to sound design or just want to better understand how synthesis works under the hood, this series will walk you through key concepts using modular building blocks inside VCV Rack. You don’t need any prior modular experience to follow along, and even if you don’t use VCV Rack, you’ll come away with practical knowledge you can apply inside your DAW.

In Part One, we’ll start from the ground up. You’ll learn how to build a basic rack, understand how envelopes work, trigger sequences, and see why VCAs are more important than most people think. Each step is designed to build clarity around core ideas that often seem intimidating or confusing. I’m excited to bring you along for the ride and would love to hear what you think in the comments.

Cheers,

S1gns

What great timing - I'm just getting started with a modular hardware rig. I've been using Bitwig's Grid for a while now, so I've got the basic concepts in this video, but am definitely looking forward to learning some of your modular tricks as the series progresses!

Paul Robinson

Excellent stuff, Chris. Looking forward to part two. Cheers.

Just starting my modular hardware journey, looking forward to seeing more of the S1gns slant!

Can’t wait for the rest of these lessons. I’m a player since age 4 (now 71!) and have finally retired so I can learn about this stuff all day long. Keep it coming, Chris - you’re my generative ambient guru! Thank you.

SAMTOPIAN

Great explanation!

Excellent - as they say: “You Can Never Have Too Many S1gns Tutorials”.

Wow! This was really amazing for helping me understand exactly what is going on "behind the scenes" in my soft synths. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the series!
