Quick Tip: Processing Wavetables with Serum (Patreon)
Content
I meant to address this in yesterday's video, but here is a quick tutorial on how I process wavetables through Serum!
Part of what makes Serum so good, is the incredibly powerful wavetable editor. It's not only good for creating good wavetables, but it's a great processor of files so you can export them and use them in any other wavetable synth of your choice. I've found that wavetables processed through Serum usually work every single time and doing so is super easy! Here's how...
There are several different ways to get wavetables into Serum. You can use the "import" feature inside the wavetable editor itself, or the easiest method is to simply drag any .wav file directly on to the wavetable oscillator itself. If this is a wavetable you've already created, just make sure it's a .wav file. You can export .wavs directly from Vitals wavetable editor using the menu on the upper right. You can choose any option here (your results may vary!) but I usually choose the top one "normal (dynamic pitch zero-snap) and it works just fine.
Now that the wavetable is there, you could technically alter the wavetable by using any of the processing methods found inside of the wavetable editor. You could add new frames, modify the existing frames, or add some of the processing effects. It's up to you! You can even use the same "harmonics and phase" drawing method I show in several of my wavetable editor videos. Serum's wavetable editor is the OG and it set the standard for most other synths to follow. It should not be overlooked!
When you're ready to export your wavetable, just choose "export" from the menu. I almost always choose "16-bit (.wav)" from the menu. This way, you're getting a standard 16BIT .wav file that you can literally use in any other wavetable synth of your choice. I don't know why Serum's exporter works, but it just works! This is what I've found to be the easiest, most compatible, and best way to get a great wavetable every single time. Hopefully this little mini tutorial helps you guys! If you have any questions, feel free to discuss in the comments below.
