Things are about to change around here!

It was recently brought to my attention that there are many of you who are in the Ambient Tutorials tier that are new to ambient music production. Meaning, you might know a few basics, but perhaps the content that I provide might be "above your level" or my teaching style might move too fast for you. If this sounds like you...I've got great news. Starting soon, I'm going to make a conscious effort to create pathways for beginners more accessible ever before, especially here on Patreon.

One of the most common questions I get asked from new patrons is "Where do I start?" and because of the nature of the platform, you currently only have a few options. If there were more videos specifically targeted for beginners that were easily accessible, it would be a valuable resource for somebody who's just starting out. On the other hand, for those of you who are already further along on your ambient journey, I can tag regular tutorials for you as "advanced" or higher level so you don't have to sit through the basics all over again, even though we could all use a refresher when it comes to foundations of music production.

I know this post is just another "coming soon" post, but just know that I'm planning all this and there is a deluge of content for the Ambient Tutorials tier that's on the way, and you all should be very excited about it. I've already got tons of ideas currently in production as well as other video topics that users have suggested which will make for a very productive start to 2023 moving into the new year. Thank you all for hanging with me during this process and as always, just stay tuned. The best is yet to come!

Cheers,

Great idea!!! I know one on ones you get more into detail with beginner stuff, but some content specifically for those of us n00bs is much appreciated

Excellent , I am very beginner :) I still enjoy the advanced content but could for sure use some more basic starter material.

Hi Chris ... good idea! I have something to suggest for a future item. I don't have much of a problem in getting that first track down. Where I struggle is with ... "what next?" ... and getting complementary timbres for the following tracks. So ... what I'd like to suggest is you give us a little guidance and insight regarding how to get timbres that are complementary.

Ken Blanton

Yeah, same here. I can always, more or less, come up with something to go with that first track but the timbre often isn't complementary enough, and I have little clue how to fix it short of sifting through loads of presets or mindlessly (almost) changing settings or synths. That's just the beginning though. I haven't figured out how to add simplicity and subtlety to my tracks. When I say that I'm thinking State Azure. My tracks always sound too bold and forward. And then there's the over use of effects. It seems like I have to add a lot just to hear it. Maybe the most vexing to me is the general approach to making ambient music. The synths we use have lots of knobs to twiddle and lots of effects to apply that result in endless possibilities. I can understand the basics but I have a hard time putting it all together in practice. I tend to think that if you understand your instrument you can always create a set of settings that creates the sound in your head. But with all the possible settings and combinations of settings we're faced with, how can you possibly do that with intent. When I watch most sound designers, I often don't see the mindful intent of how they create a sound. What I see is lots of, what looks to me, to be random tweaking of settings that somehow, magically, result in a sound that I like. So … I sometimes wonder, given all the possibilities, should my main focus be tweaking settings like heck until something pleasing results, or learning why to to tweak 'em. Yeah Neon Soul … I have lots-o-problems making music!
