Back again with another sequenced space ambient tutorial!

If there's one thing I love, it's a good sequenced space ambient track. It's not just the sounds themselves, but the way it evolves and how it takes you on a journey and by the end, you feel transformed after going through the whole experience. But how do we make this kind of ambient? What are the key things we need to focus on?

In this tutorial, I am honing in on a few key elements such as the sequences and the plucks to give you a better idea on how to layer these things together to create ever evolving sequences that could go on forever! Hopefully this video motivates and inspires you and helps you realize that it's easier than you think.

Let me know what you think in the comments down below!

Cheers and enjoy,

Unify is an interesting Tool, but seems kind of superflous as Ableton can do the same thing, just load the patches and set the midi in to another track where you play the notes...

That triple patch with Unify is pretty cool. I'm trying to think how I'd accomplish this with Reaper and Surge XT, and I think I'd have to create three tracks and then put them in a folder, which is sort of Reaper's equivalent of a bus and do the fx processing for insert effects there.

I've done my assembly in bits, and between this video and another I watched yesterday where another creator built a track while it was playing, I want to experiment with building a track this way. I think that is today's love project, after work.

Ohhhh that was a cool video, and Yes Color Copy is super dope! I love the colouring it can add to the delay. A lot of homework for tonight, it seems! :-)

... and Unify, of course. The developer is super nice, but I've never really looked into that VST.... will wait for your video and verdict

Waveform

I bought both Colour Copy & Unify on the day of their release so a couple of quick tips for new users. To get true Ping Pong on Colour Copy, you need to mess with the routing in the lower half of the screen display. I set the L/R inputs to sum to mono and the feedback section to cross feedback (check the user guide for details and variations on the theme). In unify, check out the master effects section for channel strip type pre-sets by Skippy with limiters etc that help to control levels before adding multiple layers. If your PC is a little slow running VSTs like Omnisphere with either multis or multiple layers in a single patch, it’s worth noting that each layer of Unify runs on a separate thread, so you can layer multiple Omnispheres more efficiently on multi-core machines…

Thanks for this, Chris. Your use of Unify (which I don't have) prompted me to explore again the Racks feature in Tracktion Waveform, which allows something like this kind of patch-building; probably not as deep, but certainly worth making more use of than I currently do.

As always Chris, I learn new things with your tutorials. Really good. I have used Unify since it first came out . It's an amazing plugin for creating patches. You can use any patch from any of your VST's for the Inst. layers. I have created a template with 5 layers which can be enabled / disabled with the use of the macro knobs and then automated in Ableton. This allows extreme control over which sounds to bring in and out as the song plays. And it's all right there on one track. It's a great piece of software. It can be found at pluginguru.com

Great tutorial, Chris. Totally inspiring.

So after watching this tutorial again and putting it to practical application on a new track I just want to say the bass tutorial is fantastic. I was able to quickly get that bass sound and adding a delay made it magic. I love the chords in this one too. Chris is there any chance you can talk about your favorite chord structures in future? Aside from Carbon Based Lifeforms, I think S1gns of L1fe chords and progressions are the most gorgeous out there.
