In case you were blissfully unaware this week, Minimal Audio's new flagship synth "Current" hit the market with a lot of drama. Most of it surrounding a series of missteps on the company's part and after extreme public outrage, were rectified within 24-36 hours and all hope was restored. It was a wild cycle of events that I hope other audio companies take notice and don't repeat the same mistakes in the future.

That said, what's up with Current? Is this synth worthy of all the pre-game hype that Minimal was broadcasting? I certainly think so and in this product spotlight video, I put Current through some early paces just to see what it can do and what it's all about. Before you go, did you guys catch all the buzz this week and what are your thoughts? Is Current the next big thing or is it just another wavetable synth? Let me know in the comments below!

Cheers and enjoy,

Nice one Chris. Early days for me and Currents but the signs are really good. The wavetable manipulation seems next level and the built in MA FX are excellent. They messed up a bit on launch but corrected it quickly. As a small company these things can happen and they didn’t deserve the hate. Great to see you demoing it and can’t wait to tuck in

Man, what a shit show, but the synth looks promising, and the apology seems legit. Plus I don't mind the rent-to-own model. That's how I got vital, and Phaseplant. So Kudos to them

I would have thought you'd mention the lack of a wavetable editor, as it is clearly an important part of your sound design workflow. Probably on their to do list.

Is there any ability to use noise as a modulation source such as Serum has?

Stefan Z.

I dunno 'bout this "Current". I now have a bunch of soft-synths that I believe are just straight up premium anyway (Omnisphere, VPS-Avenger, Korg-M1 and Wavestate) and quite comparable. I have Pigments, Phaseplant, Vital, Serum and a bunch of other name-droppers. Do I need or even want "Current" - seems like "Current" is late to the party and just doesn't offer a "mindf**k" that will disturb MY ecosys. However, as someone starting today - there may be an opportunity...

Looks a bit processor-heavy (you were hovering around 45% there, and I rarely notice that on your system), but then again, it's doing three or four synths and a few effects worth of work in one basket. I'd be all over it if you could pipe other audio into it and use the internal effects on that. I would actually have been interested in the subscription plan if it also included stream, but there was never an answer on whether or not it did. And, like Stefan Z., I already own VSTs that do most of what this does (except all the effects). I may end up just buying some more of their effects to use with other stuff I already have.

Oh, a question: Have you tried using any of Minimal's wavetables in other wavetable synths, say Vital or Pigments?

Ken Blanton

I'm not thrilled about how MA has decided to sell this thing ... per their FAQ it looks problematic. I think I'll pass.
