For the Ambient Tutorials tier and up...

Fun fact: Mixing doesn't have to be difficult! As many of you know, I used to struggle with mixing due to my own inconsistencies and felt like I'd never actually "get good" at the one thing that I felt was holding me back. Turns out, I just needed to put a bit more work in some areas and in doing so, the mixing process not only became easier, but much more enjoyable as well.

In this video, I go over some of the techniques that helped me get beyond my own difficulties with mixing so hopefully you guys can gain more confidence in your own mixing process. Do you guys have trouble with mixing? If so, what issues are you experiencing? Let me know in the comments below.

Cheers and enjoy,

Hi Chris. i used your idea reg. Powerpoint layering out the ideas of sounds. I added a "frequency spectrum box and put the sounds i wanna use there. Its easy to see where frequencies are not used, visually. Later on, i use Span as well. Honestly, the powerpoint helped me a lot BEFORE i start to get an impression where i will end, even for the mixing! Super idea, the PPT stuff.

bythe way, i made a Maxdevice which will stop my track when a certain threshold i decided was hit. I use it here and there, especially before any compressors.

Yes, thank you S1gns for the video. Um, have revalued my process, greatly. Obviously was ready for this. For instance, I like to ‘jam’ the synths and see what they come up with. Now by making it always in same key, A# … can put those colours on the canvas, in audio and mix. The resulting picture emerges. It looks like this S1gns lesson, has given the process to good creation. So, with resampling in Ableton, can take a track, put it in a folder and use as a colour, use it as needed in a mix. You could end up with a signature sound to a track, which re-emerges as a theme as the song continues. This is why I’m here!, Thank you S1gns.

This is a really great tutorial Chris. Can I ask, when you bounce the tracks to audio do you include any processing which you have added to the midi track previously, for example reverb. distorting, modulation, etc? Then do you only add EQ & compression to these audio tracks? I think I would personally benefit from a tutorial where I can see how & what you bounce to audio and then how you take it from there. Thank you for sharing this video. It is really helping my development.
