A chill ambient tutorial using only Pigments 5!

We all know how good Pigments 5 is as a synth, but is it really so good that you can use it for every part of your track? Absolutely! In this tutorial, we are creating the DNA of a chill ambient from absolute scratch using only Pigments 5, starting with an atmospheric pad, to the offset bass. We then synthesize a kick drum from scratch and round everything off with 2 variations of sequences.

But that's not all! As promised in the video, if sound design isn't your thing or you're just not up to speed yet - here are all the presets I created in the video to get you started:

Hopefully you guys find the tutorial useful and it inspires you on your next chill ambient adventure! Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Cheers and enjoy,

First off, this is awesome! Thanks! Tip: In Pigments 5 Settings you can enable "multicore" in order to utilize multicore CPUs in order to relieve some stress on the primary core, leaving some extra CPU ticks for those processes not able to use multiple cores. Cheers!

Excellent tutorial Chris. Thank you for sharing this with us and also for sharing the presets.

Love that sequence coming together towards the end, it sounds tribal and full of possibilities.

QUESTION about the pigments sequencer: when i record the sequence out to live, it takes the c as the rootnote, although i pitchshifted it in pigments. (have to adjust it manually in live) is there a better way to get the shifted notes?

Marek Jedliński

The sequencer in Pigments produces notes on the output, you can use this to sequence another synth down the chain. Who knows, maybe this is why it's not a modulation source - it just just makes MIDI notes. I wish though the random modulators could be made unipolar. And that there was some sort of a stereo mod like in Vital - I miss that thing everywhere now :-)

At first I wanted only to make ambient music and was not so interested in sound design, but you are changing that. This was super fun!

This tutorial is fantastic, Chris. The tip on side chaining aftertouch for modulating Fine Detune is absolute money. I've wanted to do that for quite some time. Awesome advice on the subtleties of chord progression! Thank you!
