Concerto for Group and Orchestra - mvmt 3 (Jon Lord) | Behind the Score Ep. 63

First of all, thank you, Doug, for getting through this whole piece with us. It really was a tremendous accomplishment for Jon Lord. In this movement, the orchestra and band are finally working together to build the excitement as the music climaxes. Following the score was a blast! I have to applaud your intrepid computer for handling a LOT of tasks at once and not crashing! From the look of the jewel case, that's a pretty old DVD. Is it two-sided? That may be why your player is spitting out the disc--so that you can turn it over. Some older DVDs weren't double-layered, so you literally had to turn them over. Are both sides of the disc silvery? If both sides aren't silvery and there's printing on one side, then it may be an early double-layered DVD. I had a few of them that I'd bought back in the 90s that just wouldn't play correctly anymore in modern players or computers. I believe that it's a formatting problem in the double-layering that is not longer compatible. I hope it's just two-sided!

Brilliant composition by Mr. Lord!

As the person who supplied both the DVD and score to Doug, I can state that the DVD is not two-sided, and worked fine when I tested it before sending it on to Doug. (I had both a NTSC and PAL disk and sent the NTSC disk to Doug.) The score cost me >$300 USD when I ordered it from Holland and I had a local company copy it onto a flash drive, but somehow the final page wasn't transferred so I sent on a camera shot of the page. I think the 1999 recording is much better than the 1969 for primarily two reasons. In 1999 the orchestra members were more "into" rock music than the 1969 orchestra, and Steve Morse was definitely more into the piece than Ritchie Blackmore was. When I first followed this with the score I got totally lost in the third movement. Way TOO fast! I can do it now, but that first reading was quite the experience. Latly, has Meg heard the third movement. I think she'll drool over that exquisite horn part!

I was at the RAH for the 1999 show....and it was just WOW!!!

Wow! What a revelation! This is the best integration of rock band and orchestra I've seen. I'm astonished by the level of orchestration the Jon Lord achieved at his first attempt, and the sensitivity of his arrangements. This is, by far, my favorite of the three movements, and it makes me want to listen to the whole piece again to pull together into a whole.
