“River Man” was the gateway to the music of Nick Drake for me. I look forward to your thoughts and to hearing this masterpiece once again.

Nick Drake - such a brief, delicate light; possessor of a rare gift for songwriting, guitar technique, and delivery. His work is just so wonderful. His voice is intimate and alluring, and the string arrangement is luminous, cozy and supportive. Beautiful stuff. Thanks, Doug. (and Thanks, Adie !)

Just read Richard Morton Jacks new fantastic biography on Nick and his music "Nick Drake a life." I was fascinated by Nicks music in the 80s, and I still return to it. A totally unique singer songwriter, and an equally guitar player. Nicks music is a world of its own. His manager Joe Boyd tells about Nick and the Five leaves left album In this interview. https://youtu.be/v199Q88Xkzs?si=VtOaXrMa7-rASNkx

It's great to hear you coming to the music of Nick Drake. I've loved having his work in my life since the late 80s. Northern Sky was the first thing I ever owned by him, and was also steered by John Martyn's dedication of his song "Solid Air" to Nick (while Nick was alive, but after he had stopped recording). Danny Thompson played bass with both artists. There's a a new recording just out which explores the making of "Five Leaves", with a number of different readings of the songs on the album. When I hear "River Man" I imagine Nick staring into the water, which is not fast moving, but does have strong currents and eddys, and those unattached bowing sections suggest the patterns made by the wind on the surface. I hope we hear more of your analyses of Drake's songs in due course. He came at things from such a different angle, with lots of experimentation. I remember retuning my guitar to that used on Northern Sky, and even though I'm an awful guitarist I sounded like a legend when I strummed it!

While there are only three albums from Nick Drake, and the overall quality is so high, I hope Doug can listen to all the songs. Why not in three EPL's, covering the albums in chronological order?

Thank you Doug. I love this song too and happy you are dipping into this great artist's work.

One of your best analyses, thank you! You’ll encounter Robert Kirby again as you explore Nick Drake and Strawbs.

An absolutely beautiful BTS which deepens understanding and appreciation of this wonderful piece. For me, this is what BTS is all about - analysis that takes nothing away from the piece, but adds important insights into the way the music works, to involve the mind as well as the heart and soul to the experience of the music. On a personal note, I felt privileged to bring this piece to Doug, and I feel delighted that Doug was moved enough to delve into the workings and share with us.

Love the extended harmonies in this song. Lot contemporary jazz has a lot to add color.
