Hey y'all! For our 99th installment of the Extended Play Lounge, we're returning to the music of King Crimson. Pick your preferred album from this list!

BRIAN MILLER

I voted for Thrak which is my second favorite Crimson album after Discipline

Margaret Barnes

It’s the first one with Pat Mastelotto (plus Bruford) which is great. Two drummers, two guitars, two bassists - Double Everything!

The Lizard Suite is begging for more attention.

Guitar Channel

Lizard has that unique psychedelic-progressive mix that made the first 2 albums unique. Plus, guest appearances from Jon Anderson (Yes), Keith Tippet (Centipede), Nick Evans and Mark Charig (Soft Machine), and Gordon Haskell. Also new members (at the time): Mel Collins (Camel), and Andrew McCulloch (Fields and Greenslade) makes this a sort of supergroup.

Walking the Path with Chris Ramsbottom

I went with Lizard in the end, but Thrak was on my mind because it's not an album I am consciously familiar with. However, there is an argument for doing either Beat or 3OAPP because they are part of a "trilogy" and you've already done Discipline (I think!)

Patrick Noakes

Shame to see Islands not getting much love. It may not be one of the classics, but it is an album I found myself returning to again and again. It fits a certain mood, and is my ‘go to’ Crimson album when in relaxing beach holiday mode!

Ray Sincere

But you've already done half of Lizard.

Sid Levy

Thrak would thrill Doug. I was a huge fan of the trilogy (80’s). This shift in style was hard at first to listen to. To their credit, it stayed in King Crimson lane. IMHO, Thrak was a blend of metal and prog.

Islands is such a wonderful album. It's their most acoustic album, with strings and woodwinds, all played by the group. And Sailor's Tale, with Fripp's distorted electric "banjo" sound. And that Dirty sax on Ladies of the Road!

Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)

Yes, Lizard has a track with Jon Anderson singing... and there are a handful of really deep analyses of the lyrics in historical context... but honestly, I can't say I've ever actually ENJOYED listening to "Lizard". It's a departure from convention but that's simply not enough for me. I find Thrak much more listenable, while still experimental.

Adie

For me the band that recorded Thrak was a classic King Crimson line up (the 'double trio') and Thrak is probably the most important album from the selection. I do like the 80's trilogy, and of the two on offer, my choice would be Beat. I don't see the point of doing Lizard given that the track Lizard has already been done. Islands is OK but I always reflect on the fact that the band was falling apart at the time and it seems unfocused to me. So it's Thrak for me.

Tom (the soggy one)

I have to go with Islands, not just because it's one of my faves, but we've already done side 2 of Lizard. And Doug needs to complete the first-gen KC catalog.

Potted Rodent

Another tough pick, these are all great albums, I have to go with the underdog, Islands.

Jojojojo

Islands is very underrated. It doesn't always hit the mark but the title track makes up for it in spades.

Potted Rodent

I will be looking forward to the reaction of the other side of Lizard, the first 3 tracks are like taking a mad circus trip through Wonderland.

Adrian Cockcroft

I voted for Thrak because it’s so different, and it would be good to hear the breadth and scope of KC before filling in the gaps.

André Simonsen

Islands really expands the diversity of King Crimson. I am so curious and eager to hear The Dougs thoughts about this album. And I am sure The Doug would find this album the most interesting.
