We've made it! This poll will determine which album from Dream Theater will serve as the focus of our 100th episode in this series. I decided several weeks ago that I wanted this episode to feature Dream Theater, since it was their Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory that started us in Episode One.

The Astonishing, Awake, and Octavarium are all from our Master List. And, I covered Disc Two (Title Track) from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence in Episode 10...but I never completed a listen to disc one.

For as much as we love Dream Theater in this community, I've mainly covered their individual songs on YouTube over the years. It's been since Episode 10 that we've heard a DT album. I'm curious to see which album y'all pick!

The astonishing!!!! It’s such a meaty album with a very fun Disney plot to sink your teeth into

Justin Humberger

The Astonishing is right up your alley and you'd enjoy that most.

JB (TrainofThoughts)

If you want DT for the 100th, it’s gotta have Portnoy in it. 🤷‍♂️ Anything BUT Astonishing 😬

Jose Ochoa

Of everything I’ve seen from your reaction/reviews , I think you’d thoroughly enjoy the astonishing.. this album is in my top three DT albums… hope it beats out the other albums ..

Anthony Marcantuono

The Astonishing has a lot of filler tracks which makes it pretty boring sadly. SDOIT side one is best enjoyed without breaks similar to side two. I think Awake is your best bet because of Kevin Moore. Also getting to hear a younger James on vocals.

Ryan Wilson

You all have to remember that Doug is a classical composer. The Astonishing is right up his alley, he’s always good at following the story, and he’d have a lot to say throughout. He probably shouldn’t pause between each track - it’s pretty clear when there’s a change most of the time. However, Awake is a near perfect second option!

Vei Hei

Without a doubt Awake. In my opinion One of their best albums.

Matt Hardman

Of course, others are superior, but for a classical composer reaction it has to be Astonishing.

James Mitchell

I think you have done a few tracks from Octavarium already, and selecting a concept album would utilitse the EPL format well, so I'm picking The Astonishing as it is quite out of the box in terms of traditional DT. As a rock-opera esque story, with large choral sections and ballads, it has garnered a certain reputation but these aspects I'm intrigued how Doug will analyse them and his thoughts from a composer/choral perspective. I'm curious to see what level of appreciation Doug will have as the album certainly has divided fans. I usually back concept albums for EPL as it helps in consuming the material in the way it was arranged, for first-time listens at least.

Really tough call. I think you'd enjoy all of them immensely. Few things to note: Awake would be also a great choice for 2 Fridays, it splits very well in the middle into two halfs. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, you've already heard the first song in context of the 12 step suite. If I were you, maybe I'd turn the rest into a Friday episode. IMO, The Glass Prison doesn't really have any additional context within the album, so you wouldn't lose anything (other than re-listening to a really great song). For The Astonishing and Octavarium, such an approach doesn't work. These are concept albums and they should be listened to in their entirety for context. So I picked Octavarium. :)

Karl Egil Stubsjøen

In my opinion The Astonishing and Octavarium are equally good, but I chose the latter. The title track is fantastic. Doug has listened to Octavarium (the song) song once before I believe 👍🏻😁

Ruth James

I had never heard of Dream Theater until your reaction to the Octovarium title track and then listened to the album on Spotify and ended up buying it and really like it, so guess what gets my vote😊

Long timer lurker… DT is a sum of its parts and players. You can hear the stylistic difference between Portnoy/Mangini era albums. The same can be said about its keyboardist’s through the years. Kevin Moore, Derek and Jordan all brought very, very different approaches to DT sound sonically with sound and patch choices. The year was 1994, Green Day Dookie, Soungarder Superunknown, oasis Definitely Maybe, NIN downward Spiral, Beastie Boys I’ll Communication, Jeff Buckley Grace, STP, Weezer, Bush 16 Stone (6 singles) and Pink Floyd Division Bell all came out this year…what a time for music…as did Dream Theater Awake. While all these other massively popular bands gained fame and fortune, Dream Theater cemented themselves as master musicians and torch carriers of ‘Progessive Metal’.Kevin Moore left right after this album. I choose Awake and the song Scarred is one of the most underrated DT songs of all time. A personal favorite of mine.

John Wismar

I know The Astonishing is polarizing among DT fans, but I would love to hear Doug's reaction. I think it really plays into his background and interests, and his insights would be fascinating.

Awake is a fargin classic! They still had that Images drive, but went metal on us!! 🤘🏽👴🏽🤘🏽 Plus, you have already done a reaction to Octavarium. So, do Awake! Awake! Awake! Awake! lol

Arrow2theACL

I picked The Astonishing, but will change to Awake if it is between Awake an Octavarium. Not that Octavarium isn't great, but I think Doug has already heard some of the album and the other songs would make a great Friday episode. Doug has not heard anything from Awake. For reference Daily Doug Episodes from Octavarium album: Octavarium: Episode 134 (studio) Episode 626 (Live from Score) The Root of All Evil: Episode 429 Sacrificed Sons (Live from Score) : Episode 455

Your video on Octavarium was my first introduction to you so, being a sucker for nostalgia, the choice for me is easy
