I'm very pleased to present our 100th episode in this series. I feel quite privileged to be supported in this work, and I'm thankful for your continued support.

We're listening to Dream Theater's third album, Awake. Somehow, ALL of these tracks were first time listens for me. And, there's some great songs on this album. I was taken aback by the strength of James' vocals and by the proggy harmonies coming from Kevin Moore's synths. It's a long album, but it's all worthy. I hope you enjoy!

It's got some great ones. I love Voices, Silent Man, The Mirror, Lifting Shadows ❤️‍🔥

Brian Begnoche

This is my favorite DT album. It always has been.

Gary Thobaben

Gotta say, Kevin Moore era DT sounds very melodic and atmospheric. A lot less vaudeville creepy clowns than JR era.

DAVID SCHWARTZ

That was very enjoyable to hear your reaction to this DT album Doug. It was truly a pleasure to listen to your take on these songs. Thanks for listening and sharing this. 😊

Petter Dragland

In my opinion their absolute peak. The perfect blend between progressive and a bit more accessible leaning

Ulf Skjoldhammer

This album is my favourite by DT, not a weak song on it. The balance between memorable themes and just outrageous playing is great, due to Kevin Moore’s influence perhaps. I prefer both him and Sherinian to Rudess, if I’m honest.

David Bole

A cult favorite for a reason. This was the DT album that hooked me. Kevin's playing was more about finding excellent keyboard textures rather than the crazy virtuosity of JR. Yes, it is a bit "grunge"-y, but remember what was happening in 1994 and it will make sense. I'm glad you enjoyed hearing James' unbroken vocal cords. If you read the liner notes for this album, James makes sure to thank his "opera coach." What an excellent follow up to Images and Words, despite being on the whole kind of a downer of an album. There's more brooding than joy in this one, but my goodness, they were on fire musically and sonically. So freaking good!

Justin Humberger

I always thought Scarred was about a divorce... Best song on the album and arguably one of JP's best solos. So glad you enjoyed the album, I haven't heard it in a long time either, was very moving.

I always wonder what happened with Petrucci's lyrics. On this album, they are dripping in metaphor. Then you look at all of the lyrics he has written since, and they are the exact opposite. So much of the rest of his output is very blunt and literal. I like plenty of the later stuff too, so I'm not just bashing. It's just interesting how drastic the change is.

Steve Schad

Ok, I have now watched the video, and I just love seeing your reaction to a first time listen after hearing this album so many times and knowing it so well. It's kind of funny, or sad, that I know the lyrics by heart but never really paid attention to what they were saying. Hearing you analyze the lyrics I have a much deeper appreciation for the songs. This was their first album I was anticipating its release for I was already a huge fan of their second album. When there were only three albums to listen to, they got a lot of play, and I listened to them all the time. But every time they released a new album, I feel they got better and better at writing and it became my new favorite. After 16 albums Awake had become less of a favorite to listen to so it was a pleasure to hear again. After watching your reaction, I have a new appreciation for it. Thanks for doing what you do Doug.

I had to becoma backer again because of this! 😅

My heart skipped a beat, when The Mirror finished and Lie didn't start right away. 😅 Also, "WTF is going on now?" is a pretty good summary of DT music. 😁 Great EPL, Doug! Love that album, love the reaction.

Awake ranks VERY high in my Dream Theater albums. Absolute classic. I miss Kevin Moore's writing style.

Been watching for years on YT, finally made a subscriber out of me😅

Maester Doug, my way of thinking, Awake is self evident It doesn’t require analysis I think that’s why nobody ever asks to have it analyzed, it’s already perfect. And that’s why I absolutely love that you reviewed it Nobody else will. You boldly went where nobody else would go.

Doug my friend.. I’ve been patiently waiting for this listen since you reacted to The Dance of Eternity and I’ve been with you ever since. This was the album that got me hooked on DT and has been my sentimental favorite for almost 30 years. It was so worth the wait and I’m actually happy you listened now after hearing most of the catalogue so you can fully appreciate how sublimely unique this album is in its color and raw emotion. I’ve been in and out of the Patreon sub over the years but I always come back and instantly re subbed for this one. My Daily Doug cup is so full right now so thank you for the education and inspiration you’ve given all of us on this journey! Cheers!

Ever since the first Dream Theater reaction video Ive been waiting for this one for quite some time. In my opinion this is their best album. Mostly because this was the album that introduced Dream Theater to me, autumn of -94 first year in high school towards musical studies. A classmate of mine played "Lie" and Johns solo there just floored me. As a 16 year old guitar player who came from a grunge background this is still to this date the peak moment of any music related experiences. I joined you Patreon specifically for this reaction. Thank you Doug!
