Doug on Demand: Episode 35

Ross Pollack

Great episode with a lot of cool music. Jimmy Page custom-ordered the double-neck seen on this album cover shortly after they recorded the 4th album, with "Stairway to Heaven." Page knew that he'd need it to faithfully reproduce the song on stage. Gibson had made them in the early '60s but stopped until Page requested it. It was primarily for live performances, and he also used it on "The Song Remains the Same" and "The Rain Song" from Houses of the Holy, as well as "Celebration Day" and "Tangerine" from Led Zeppelin III (rarely performed live). His primary guitar (and the one used on "Heartbreaker") was a 1959 Gibson Les Paul he bought from Joe Walsh while Zeppelin was on tour in the US in early 1969. He used that on every Zeppelin album beginning with Led Zeppelin II.

I couldn’t make it, but I’m so happy my song got picked! :) Sorry I missed y’all.

Mixed feelings that you heard Sailor’s Tale ahead of what will hopefully someday be an EPL of Islands.

As ever, a lovely mix of great tracks; i'm sad to have missed it. I haven't listened to Sailor's Tale for so many years it was a revelation to hear it anew. Loved it. Without being rude, Fripp seems to have picked up a banjolele in some of it - really different tone from a Les Paul! So glad to have had some Richard and Linda Thompson. His partnership with Linda is a wonderful part of Richard Thompson's career. I can add that the guitar tuning is drop D and with a capo on the first fret you get Eb on the 6th string, and some easy chord shapes for an Eb key. Loved the Shaun Phillips - never heard him, and definitely want to hear more. Good for you David - keep'em coming, and stay well.

Sad I missed the playing of Lizards. One of my favorite songs I chase to hear at Phish shows.

Jim Reeves

sorry that I couldn't make it Sunday but glad you got to hear Sailors Tale Dr. Doug! Too bad it didn't come right after The Callapso, would've made great bookends. Thank you.

Jim Reeves

Thanks for the KC Dr. Doug! And thank you David for Shawn Phillips! Doug needs to hear Springwind and L Ballade too!

Your explanation of learning to hear harmonic relationships was interesting...and, like the commenter, I have learned to hear such relationships far more clearly following your channel. My own musical training and abilities had always allowed me to identify certain kinds of relationships and harmonies...but what becoming more conversant in roman-numeral chord-naming and concepts like secondary dominants has done is allowed me to hear those things more clearly: not just "they went up a major third" but "they moved from I to III." And I find that, even in casual listening, I'm able to keep track of what's happening harmonically more readily. So in addition to listening (and relistening) to a lot of great tracks along with your reactions, commentary, and analysis, following you has deepened my understanding of the music I hear. Thanks! Looking forward to another year of music here.
