I've been waiting to share this album with y'all for a few months...and I'm thrilled to offer this episode! Woodcut is the brand new concept album by Big Big Train, their 16th overall and 2nd with Alberto Bravin as lead vocalist. In this album, we hear the story of 'The Artist' and his quest to find a deeper inspiration and motivation for his creative work...a topic that I think all of us can connect with.

Strap in, y'all! We're listening to the entire 66 minute album without stopping! I hope you enjoy!

It's 1:43 am , thank you for being a guide through such a great album. This will be ordered in the morning. Now I'm off to sleep .

I know BBT for many years, but through you I found out about the beauty of their music. Can't stop listening to Woodcut and hope to find time to watch your reaction which will surely not disappoint.

I watched that EPL last night. It was my first complete run through if the album and it was so fulfilling to hear it with your comments. Your introduction was really well done and it set my expectations very high for what was to come. I loved that the lyrics were embedded at the bottom of the screen, it really helped to get involved in the story. Music, as always, was amazing but with the concept adding another dimension I feel like the band brings everything to another level. Each song feels like it can be my favorite. Great album, the bar has been set so high now for future releases. It will be hard not to put this at number one on year end lists. After watching your review I watched the one you did for Nightwish's album Imaginaerum. I was unfamiliar with it 's story and I think it shares a lot with the story from Woodcut, an artist that goes on an introspective journey, searching for the meaning of it's life, it's place in the world. I am now going to listen to the Atmos mix of those two great albums...

This is lovely. It will take me a few more listens to really get into it, as with all the best prog music, but I am pretty sure it will be on my shopping list at some point.

Joseph Pasteris

Wow. No wonder BBT is the best. I'm hoping to see this group in April near me.

Just watched the interview with the band. It's great to see and have an insight into the individual band members' personalities. Cool band and album. I will endeavour to check out more of their material.

I haven't finished listening to this yet (although I did hear the whole album the other night). I really appreciate the lyrics being shown, it helps me orient myself. However, I already hear the scale of this achievement by the band - the massive palette they have and the amount of material compressed into the whole album, not a second wasted. Admirable. I'm curious how the vinyl edition works as 66 minutes is too long for a single album but not long enough for a double by my reckoning - in the days of vinyl this would have been a double with extra material to fill it out, and we all know the controversies around the double albums of the classic Prog greats. This album doesn't have that constraint and the focus on the long line through the whole work remains consistent throughout. I believe this is a watermark, not only the for the band, but also for Prog Rock in the current times. I have no doubt this is an album to live with for years to come, and to take in deeper and deeper. It's very beautiful. Enough of my blather - I am very glad Doug has a personal association with this band at the time of the production of this album. 🙂

First time hearing all the things that weren't singles. Admittedly I'm listening at work, and only via my smartphone, but it sounds a very cohesive album. Great soundscapes and instrumentation, and an interesting theme. I've been listening alot to Kansas recently, and the violin on the later tracks put me in mind of Robbie Steinhardt's playing on their earlier and mid period work. I'm looking forward to listening again on a decent system so I can hear more why it has struck you so deeply Doug. Love your enthusiasm for the band and the genre. I'm currently reading a book about Peter Hammill - "Rock & Role" - by Joe Banks. It's great and highly recommended. Stay cool Doug.

LISTEN AGAIN.........CHILLS CHILLS

This episode includes all of the reasons why I subscribe to Doug's community at the highest level,

Philip Briddon

I think that if Big Big Train were active in the classic era of Prog (early 70s) that this band and this album would be held in the same kind of esteem as the Genesis and Yes works of that era. This exceeds expectations and then goes even further.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

I have listened to a few Big Big Train album in the past, but this is the real deal. Tremendous piece of art.

What an album! You should come to the Boerderij in the Netherlands sometime, Doug. Most of the prog bands you cover on your channel, like BBT, play and have done live recordings here. We’d love to have you.
