The timing was right for this 'Doug's Choice' in the Extended Play Lounge. We're listening to Second Album from Curved Air. I've only heard their music twice (both in Doug on Demand sessions) and I remember wanting to hear more from them. So, when I saw that they were preparing for a 'Farewell Tour', I took the opportunity to listen to their second album...aptly titled Second Album. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this album. It greatly exceeded my expectations...sounding at times like Renaissance and at others like a cross between Jethro Tull, Kansas, Sandy Denny, and King Crimson...yet still sounding quite unique. This is a fun hour, and I hope you enjoy!

I hope you can get to their debut ("Air Condtioning") or "Phantasmagoria" (I don't think Steward Copeland plays on either of those but they feature some similar tracks as this album). One downside to their studio albums is you don't get to hear Kristina let loose with some vocal pyrotechnics; there are some good live cuts of them that would be worth watching to compare/constrast the studio tracks.

Great choice, Doug. I knew you'd love this record, and what's not to love! The absence of heavy guitars and the singular voice of Sonia Kristina make the band stand out from most of their early 70's art rock contemporaries. Although, as you said, this music could be easily scored for a full orchestra, I love how Curved Air doesn't fall back on classical trappings and cliches. Surely one of the most adventurous and fascinating bands of their era.

Wow! I was aware of them back in those days, but never paid them much attention. My mistake. This was an absolutely wonderful album to listen to, and of course you were there with us to give us your keen insights. ("It's a D-flat." was a good moment.) Thanks, Doug, for waking me up to a band I should have known about for ages, but only just now began to really appreciate. Clever stuff!

Yet another band that escaped my attention through the years. Doug's shows have been both entertaining and educational, to say the least.

Although I had heard this album before, it was probably only one time, and it's so long ago the album came across completely fresh to me. It's so accomplished, so full of diverse sounds and textures, and interesting harmonic moves, the time flashes by. I remember Curved Air being a hugely respected band back in the 1970's, and this shows exactly why. Great choice Doug - thanks.

Many thanks for doing this, Doug. This was the first album I ever bought! Some observations: This was not their highest charting album; their debut album "Air Conditioning" reached number 8, partly due to its initial release as a picture disc. "somebody went to music school" Darryl Way studied at the Royal College of Music and Francis Monkman at the Royal Academy of Music. You will note that Darryl wrote all the music on side one, likewise Francis on side two. This was also the case for their next album and their differing approaches ultimately led to its breakup shortly thereafter. Someone mentioned Stewart Copeland; he was a member of a later line-up which was signed to the label owned by his brother Miles (coincidentally, also the label to which Renaissance were signed). Sonja is the only original member left. The lyrics you recognised in "Piece of Mind" are taken from T. S. Eliot's "The Waste Land".

Thank you Doug!! Air cut and Phantasmicgoria were regulars along with as you mentioned Camel and Rennasanace in the late seventies...It's probably 40 + years since I've thought of them. WOW! I know what I'm listening to on my Saturday drives!

I first heard of Curved Air at a high school party around 1971–72, when “Back Street Luv” was playing. The song was on the LP “Let It Rock For Release,” a charity album released in late 1971 to combat the drug crisis, featuring well-known artists (Yes; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Faces; Led Zeppelin; Frank Zappa; James Taylor; Klaus Doldinger, and others). This already reflects the group’s popularity shortly after its formation. Of course, I bought Curved Air’s first LPs soon after that and have never regretted it.
