Our 2nd episode of the Extended Play Lounge is scheduled for release on August 15. I have narrowed the choices down to these 5 options. Vote for your favorite! (I'm sure we'll get to the rest of the options in time.)

Hoping for Misplaced Childhood but I'm super excited for most of these!

Anonymous

These are all great and thanks for letting us vote!

Russ West

How great to have a part of our lives where any of these choices are spectacular

Ken Scott

Great choices 👍🤘

Anonymous

My top 3 picks are the 3 frontrunners, so I'm good no matter what.

Roy Torset

A lot of great stuff here,be sure to include «the human equation « by Ayeron at one point🙂😉,great stuff doug👍

Jake Vogt

If you end up doing Hemispheres, it might be worth starting with Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage, which is the final track on the previous album. That one and the title track if Hemispheres form a sci-fi narrative together that straddles the gap between albums (though musically they’re pretty distinct)

Fabian J Lelo

And seeing that you enjoyed the Dream Theater album, also check out Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime and A Pleasant Shade of Gray by Fates Warning... 🤞😁 Out of that list? Great choices there, though I chose Deep Purple...

Nick Helvey

Snow snow snow snow snow snow!

Garance A Drosehn

If going for a Marillion album, I'd go for "Afraid of Sunlight" or "Marbles" (the full version which includes 'Ocean Cloud') over "Misplaced Childhood". "Misplaced Childhood" is also a very fine album, but I expect that if it's picked then it'd be at least a few months before we could do another extended-play from Marillion!

Eirik Morken

Snoooow! Snow snow snow snow snow!! As long as you do Snow at any given time, I'm happy. It is my desert island album. The songwriting and musicianship on this album is some of the best ever. Me and my wife had the last track on the album as a "postludium" when we went out of the church in our wedding, with full band. Can't wait until you do this album Doug. Because you HAVE to do it! 🙏

Garance A Drosehn

Are we supposed to vote for just one of these? This vote is setup such that we could check off as many of them as we wanted to. I checked just one, but in fact any of these would be fine with me. Maybe it should be "Vote for your top two picks!" instead of "Vote for your favorite!" (which implies that we should select only one album).

Blinky

I love Hemispheres, but you haven't heard Cygnus X-1 which has a sequel there. You have also heard La Villa Strangiato, which is 25% of that album, already. Snow or Lamb are both better choices for now

Leo Sconzo

Hemispheres by a long shot!!! Must also listen to Cygnus X-1 the voyage

aaron c

Rush is by far my favorite band, but I think SNOW is the best choice.

Glenn Wo
>>65416389

Agree. He could/should do a Cygnus X-1 book 1 and 2 reaction/analysis instead :)

Frank Bernard

Yes need to do both part 1 and part 2 of Cygnus

doughelvering

Ok…if Rush wins out, we’ll reconsider the album to do first…

Anonymous

Chose Hemispheres only cause I’m most familiar with this, and of course it’s Rush in one of their best eras. But of course I’m a little biased since rush is my favorite band. I’ve just recently discovered Neil Morse and while hearing of spocks beard for years never listened to them much.

Ben Allen

I have to admit that while I don't like Snow, and I voted for Genesis, I am kind of interested in seeing Doug's thoughts on the album and hear it through some fresh ears. I've always felt that the lyrics were clunky and ham-fisted, and the result was that I rarely listen to the album, as opposed to V or Day for Night, which I reach for pretty regularly.

Johnny Marsh

I will go with The Lamb, simply because IMHO its a standout album from Genesis amongst 5 or 6 standout albums and probably their most experimental / creative and, of course, Peter Gabriel's last one before he went solo.

Paul Humphrey

If you add in Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage, it only adds on 10:25 to the whole Hemispheres album. And you've already reacted to Xanadu (from a Farewell to Kings) so not much of a worth to react to the whole F2K album. oh, and you've already done La Villa Strangiato from the Hemispheres album. So I suppose the recommendation would be both Cygnus, then Circumstances and one of their greatest songs of all time, THE TREES! There is unrest in the forest... trouble with the trees... for we maples want Rush Cygnus... and its split over two EPs...

Jake Vogt

I suppose the perfect world would be Farewell and Hemispheres together. Doug hasn't heard the studio version of Xanadu, and when he did do the the live version he didn't know much about the band, so revisiting it in context would be cool. The only snag is closing out on studio La Villa, which he's already done. Maybe tack on one more track from another album so it's not anticlimactic? Natural Science? Or am I just getting greedy, lol

Jake Vogt
>>65420591

Or wait, better idea - maybe sub in a live La Villa instead of the studio track!

Randy Hammill
>>65417783

I will point out that other than Moving Pictures, which is a masterpiece, most Rush albums don't necessarily require full album listens. It's more by era, which are neatly summarized in their live recordings. By you could mix and match from 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres and still get a solid listening experience. There are key songs that seem to define each album, and then, not really filler, and they are good songs, but would work between the key songs on any of those other albums.

Denis Perron

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the perfect adventure for you. :-)

Anonymous

Love the idea of "SNOW" by Spock's Beard (2002) and also "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" (1974) by Genesis basically because a) these albums are the SwanSongs of both bands.. b) both lead singers (Neal Morse (Spock's Beard) & Peter Gabriel (Genesis)) each left their respective bands immediately after the recordings were made.. both went on to have super groups/solo careers.. Note, in 2019, Spock's Beard came back together with Neal Morse and performed a live DVD of the band performing SNOW.. in a church! It is worth seeing.. a fantastic concert.. it's the only time this piece has been performed in public.. Those are my two first choices.. it shows the mastery and virtuosity of both bands and their lead composers..

christoph ziesecke

the 4th place for Marillion will be a good thing...for an "intependent" UK group in an US Poll...really :-)

Paul Mouradjian

As a sidenote: "Snow" was criticized for having similarities to the Lamb. Irony or Poetic justice that they are 'DOING BATTLE' in the vote count. *I am not disparaging Snow as I enjoy it as well. Simply placing a historical context upon the release.

Glenn Wimberly

All amazing pieces. Hopefully all get reviewed at some point. Marillion bcuz few know it. England's secret from the world.

Paul Lowder

That’s a cruel choice to have to make. Would love to see Snow as I’m not that familiar with it. The length always put me off. Side 2 of Hemispheres is incredible but I found side one boring compared to Cygnus X1. So I went for Misplaced Childhood as you haven’t done Marillion yet ( though Clutching At Straws is better)

Anonymous

You have done RUSH, Genesis and Spock's Beard but none Marillion. It's time for the best band of them all.

Ron Swirson

i always am confused as to how to actually send my choice. After I check the box for my vote, what then? How do I actually cast it so it registers? Once I check the box it doesn't count it unless I make it official and I don't se any way to do that. If I simply check the box, leave the page and come back the number of votes for my choice doesn't show it increasing y 1 vote so it clearly doesn't register. Can anyone help me?

Glenn Wo
>>65434029

what browser do you use? Works fine in chrome just to tick the box.

Ron Swirson

I'm using Brave which is chromium based

Paul Humphrey
>>65441244

I believe if you just check a box, it'll automatically save. The only way to know for sure is to experiment with it, check the box. close your browser, then start the process over to see if it's already checked.

Anonymous

Ho not Rush again... I love Rush but there's a THOUSAND videos on the band's 70's albums... There's nothing to had I think. Something like Snow or Deep purple makes more sense, it's not been over analyzed to death. It's my opinion anyway

Ron Swirson

When I close the page and open it up again the check mark is still there unregistered

Paul Humphrey
>>65443709

as long as you have checked something and when you come back it's still checked, then I believe it's registered.

Ron Swirson

i hope so too. I just retried with Microsoft edge and its the same. Also when I made the check mark the vote count stayed the same, even as I refreshed

Anthony Taylor

SNOW and The LAMB, excellent choices!

Anonymous

Snow definetely has to happen sometime! I believe Doug would be really into the theme of the story

Juan Ignacio Quesada

I picked Marillion over the others because it is lot less known and there are no reactions to it. Deep Purple’s Concerto is awesome too. The other bands have been reviewed so it’s time to something fresh.

Nathan-Andrew

So many excellent choices! I will say, though, that before doing The Lamb (whenever that happens) I think you might want to consider reading all the material that comes with the album first. There’s a semi-comprehensible, stream of subconsciousness story that Gabriel wrote, describing the story being told. If you read that together with the lyrics before even listening to the music, I think you’ll find it helpful. The Lamb is A LOT, as they say in internet land. A reaction to everything at once is often unsatisfying. It’s a vast and monstrous thing that can take time to appreciate. It can often just leave a first-time listener feeling nonplussed. I do believe that the prep work would help you to listen more freely.

Paul Mouradjian
>>65454025

Agreed 100% ..... Lots to Digest. Injest. Gesticulate. Gestate. However....Doug is very good with Libretto....although Suppers Ready was challanging. The Lamb may be as challanging at times......By the way, have you seen his brother "John?" ;)

Paul t hebert

Snow will blow your socks off. Please do it Doug, please, please, please!

Paul t hebert

There is not a single one on that list it would be a mess. Personally the top of that list is snow

Rhesus Perplexus

When you say The Lamb are you talking all four sides? This is a double Lp. in case you didn't know. Hoping for a win here!

Rob Winchell

Really need to tackle Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (the full song/side), on the album of the same name by Dream Theater. Doug will thoroughly enjoy that! We would enjoy the insights.👍🏻

Anonymous
>>65505919

I'd like to see Doug do 6DoIT also, but I don't want people to think this is becoming the Dream Theater channel. Hopefully, he circles around to it in a few weeks.

Rob Winchell

True, just for future suggestion.👍🏻

Richard Karbowski

I voted for The Lamb,, it is a masterpiece. Never got into Snow,, but that is possibly because of what happened with the band after it was released.. Another lengthy work worth checking out for future extended play sessions is Subterranea by the band IQ. Another double CD, but maybe a bit more modern... and more Van der Graaf Generator and/or Peter Hammill solo please, PH is amazing (my wife says he is my boyfriend, which is maybe not too far from the truth!). And Todd Rundgrens Utopia-The Ikon!

Walker Bachman

Looks like Hemispheres is pulling into the lead. If you go with that one, you must play Cygnus X-1 from their previous album first. The first track on Hemispheres is part 2! EDIT: OOPS... I didn't notice the earlier comment with the same suggestion. Needless to say, I second it!

Sian Podmore

Hard choice, good selection, but please do Tales from Topographic Oceans sometime

diego

I would like to see an Extended Play Lounge of transatlantic the whirlwind, another neil morse band, in this band also play mike portnoy, Roine Stolt from flower kings and Pete Trewavas from marillion, great album and amazing band

Anonymous

yes! Transatlantic The Whirlwind! I second that.

Tobias Schwenk

Ayreon - The theater equation ...the whole Live-DVD. That would be amazing!

Paul t hebert

Snow is a monster. BTW, the exact same thing happened to genesis after lamb. Gabriel left the band as did Morse from Spock. How can you hold that against Neal. No one gave Gabriel Crap

Michael Kuhl
>>66641921

Also the drummer came forward in both bands to take over as frontman. Both albums dealt with someone running around New York City with names that were 4 letters.
