Content

It's time for our next Extended Play Lounge poll. Marillion and Haken both make it into this round because of their 2nd and 3rd place finishes last time. I'm including Pain of Salvation, Queensryche, and Frank Zappa because they have placed well in previous polls...and I'm not quite ready to do an Extended Play Lounge episode with a band for the second time. So...happy voting!

We'll run this round through Monday, November 8.

Comments

Ron Cook

Early Marillion with Fish on vocals, like Script for a Jester's Tear.

Teresa Conboy

Black Napkins, Frank Zappa. 🙂 And please also consider for future, Change of the Guard by Kamasi Washington. On the track there is a chorus of vocals you would probably really appreciate.

Johnny Bell

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats would be a great one to listen to.

Dennis Rees

Very disappointing to me that the polls tend toward metal bands - not all of course, but little room for others.

Bill Lee

Somewhere to Elsewhere by Kansas might be an interesting extended play. The last album with Kerry Livgren as the driving force behind the music.

Great Scott

Need to get ELP into this poll soon.

Anonymous

Are marillion and Zappa really considered metal?

Anonymous

I hope that Spock’s Beard will be included in next round again! The SNOW album would be great to share with you 👌🏻

Einaras Sipavičius

If Marillion wins, I hope the community won't nominate Misplaced Childhood (it's a weak album for me). But I'm afraid of that, so I voted for Pain of Salvation. PoS have two weak albums in their discography (Road Salts), but everything else is fantastic, so I would be really excited to hear Doug's insights on one of those albums. My favourites are Be and Remedy Lane.

Einaras Sipavičius

I'm still looking forward to see more Van der Graaf Generator, that's quite a long break after A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers (I guess VdGG fans are not that loud). And I think the best way to continue with VdGG is to hear the whole Godbluff album, because it has a more accessible sound than A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, yet still weird.

John B

You need more Pink Floyd in your life. dark Side, Wish you Were Here, or The Wall. Live at Pompeii is amazing too

I would claim Pain of Salvation is a borderline also. They are at moments melodic in a way that sounds like a rock balladry. So I agree, options are not that metal-dominated.

Bill Lee

Early Marillion with Fish--agreed! But I vote for Misplaced Childhood (their 3rd studio album)

Funny. I really enjoy the first road salt but I get that it’s different. Several other albums didn’t hit the mark for me, like Scarsick, for instance. I still wait for Snow by Spock’s Beard, or for Tyranny by Shadow Gallery or Paradox by Royal Hunt. I may be waiting a while on those second two haha. It I digress.

Richard Karbowski

I am voting for Marillion, as long as it is Fish Era. I am a mega Zappa fan, but which album? Yikes

Gary Thobaben

I have never listened to an entire Marillion record and so I hope this to be the first of them!

Edward Malthouse

Loved Estonia this week, and New Kings. It would be great to hear something from the Fish era. Misplaced Childhood is incredible. So is Clutching at Straws. I have some personal favorites on Fugazi, but I don't think it's as mature as the other two.

Anonymous

Operation Mindcrime!!

Einaras Sipavičius
>>71267860

For me it's reversed: Script For A Jester's Tear and Fugazi are preferred and I'm not a fan of Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws, although the latter is a tiny bit better and has a few tracks I really dig.

Anonymous

Marillion have such a great back catalogue.

Artur Kinal

I hope it's Zappa, but Marillion would be fine too but with something from the Fish era.

Bill C

Voting for Marillion to block Zappa :D

Nikolay Yordanov

I agree, it's an excellent album! On top of the epic Ocean Cloud, there's Neverland, Fantastic Place, The Invisible Man... But I suspect there are some people who are still (after over 30 years!) debating Fish vs Hogarth as if Hogarth came over and kicked Fish out and that sort of bullshit... I actually like both versions of the band in a different way but since I've listened the early albums to death when I was young, now I tend to gravitate to the later more mature and complex compositions and they are really well done. In my opinion it would be more fair to listen to both eras but I doubt it would possible for Doug to satisfy both worlds.

John Clark

And I will just keep advocating for Clutching at Straws, as is my wont. One of these days all my dreams will come true, but for the moment I will settle for an extended play of CaS.

Arrow2theACL

The Mountain by Haken would be glorious, but it looks like it will continue to be an uphill battle. Get it! Zing! Maybe they will reach the summit one day.

John Clark

If it ends up with Zappa, how about Chunga's Revenge being given a run? It's got a lot of what Zappa is synonymous for; great playing, a mixture of musical styles, corny lyrics, smutty lyrics, extended instrumental workouts....the lot. It's also the album where Flo & Eddie (The Florescent Leach & Eddie, to be precise), Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, previously of The Turtles, enter the Zappasphere. Great, great album.

Anonymous

I gotta go with Pain of Salvation because they're my all-time favourite band, but I'm guessing it's either "The Perfect Element Pt. 1" or "Be".... "Be" is the way to go for someone of your musical temperament.

Ron Swirson

It HAS to be Mr. Z... That's my vote and I'm sticking to it! :-)

Bill Lee

It's difficult with many of these bands. I suppose we all have those albums that register with us on some unquantifiable level. For me, so much of early Rush, early (Fish era) Marillion, Kansas, and Yes just spoke to me. But I'm definitely open to other options. Love listening to Doug analyze just about anything, so whatever he chooses will be more than worthwhile to tune in to!

Doug, I don't know if Camel ever comes up? They have some wonderful prog albums and Andy Latimer is an incredible guitarist. U.K. also are incredible, it's a super group, with John Wetton, Bill Burford, Allan Holdsworth and Eddie Jobson. Steve Hackett's (ex Genesis guitarist) solo stuff is another wonder to behold! Man, we can go on forever with suggestions 😀

>>71269566

My sentiments exactly. Both are great albums but I think Doug would get a real kick out of the whole theme and scope of "Be". Would love to see him react to that.

Newt

I cannot get enough of FZ, although I like Marillion.

Dave Vick

Zappa. 'Nuff said.

Khaled Akbik

Seeing the comments, I’m afraid Haken will lose again! Enough of the classics y’all. They’ve been thoroughly listened to and analyzed time and time again. I, personally, would love for something as modern and complex as Haken to be broken down. I’ll keep doing the good work and vote. 😊

christoph ziesecke

Let us Push the bottom on the top (and surprising with Brave,Gaza, ocean cloud, strange engine or what ever lovely from the Marillion) A nice weekend to all ❤️❤️

Toby

If Pain of Salvation doesn’t win the poll, then please do yourself a favor, Doug: listen to ‘Be’! The whole album is right up your alley for sure! 😁

Paul Hoyle

At some stage Doug, you really need to listen to some early, Fish era, Marillion (and I adore H era Marillion)...so please listen to the whole of Misplaced Childhood...it is amazing.

Michael Kramer

Marillion ‚Estonia‘ was great. Since I have seen the youtube coverige of their concert at the Royal Albert Hall (with their friends from the Orchestra) I more and more enjoyed their music and texts. Way more interessting then the ‚old‘ Marillion with Fish as leadsinger. I grew up with and got musicaly socialized in the early seventies. Listening to Marillion and some other interesting groups I feel timeshiftet.Time stands still. So if Marillion wins the election, i would enjoy this.

Rick Morse

I voted for Frank Zappa, but more specifically any portion of the live "Zappa Plays Zappa" concert from 1997 led by his son Dweezil. Their renditions of songs such as "The Torture Never Stops", "I Am the Slime", and "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow", "Inca Roads", and "Son of Orange County" are first rate.

MusicFighter

I voted for Marillion. I'd really love you to react to either "Script for a Jester's Tear" from Fish era or "Brave" from Hogarth era. Both amazing albums :)

I love Haken, but I almost never vote for them. I think they are already quite overhyped on media and has a huge fanbase, similar to Tool. And I prefer that lesser known bands, for example, Pain of Salvation and even Marillion (not many young people know about this band despite being legendary), would get the attention they deserved. P.S. Affinity is one of my favourite albums of the 2010s decade, so I don't consider Haken inferior to anything.

Glenn Wo

What products are you using for your glorious beard Doug?

Anonymous

Desperately want to see you do a reaction to the entire Operation Mindcrime album!!

Anonymous

Hello!…. I’m new from Peru. Always I remembered “Easten” from those guys but the older version. Great channel 👊🏼

Anonymous

I'd love to see your take on Hot Rats by Frank Zappa

Newt

Come on, Frank Zappa

Anonymous

PoS deserve some love and attention

Wade Markham

We need to do early Porcupine Tree. Especially Voyage 34

Paul Hoyle

even if not successful in this poll, please listen to the entire Misplaced Childhood album by Marillion...it is truly breathtaking Doug.

Where do the suggestions for the extended play lists come from? Here are a few suggestions: Pat Metheny: Still Life (Talking); Styx: The Grand Illusion; Talking Heads: Speaking in Tounges; U2: Achtung Baby; and Led Zeppelin: Dazed and Confused from Song Remains the Same movie (Live Madison Square Garden) (30 min but I hear they are blockers)

christoph ziesecke

I am a old Marillion fan…but I prefer a newer Album or long track……But we're all one (tonight) these days❤️👍

Pedro Sena

I would prefer Frank Zappa from that list, since it (at least) it is totally different and not much about the commercial tastes in most music, something that Frank himself had an issue with ... "serious music" to the point of getting upset to a kid wanting yet another guitar solo and he put the guitar down and conducted the rest of the concert! Mean, really, but in the end, a point well made! The rest of the bands are too much into the fame side of it, and less into the music in my book.

Jozo

I’ll wait patiently for the day you react to a full Haken album. Love coming amazing! Hopefully Aquarius or Visions 🙏

Arrow2theACL
>>72113368

Amen Jozo. Haken has been 2nd or 3rd in the poll since they been on. Doug needs just a smidge more metal on the Patreon exclusives. I think the folks here would actually enjoy a reaction to The Mountain. Although Aquarius is my favorite.

Claudio Fernandes

Hi Doug. Can I suggest a poll for a Zappa extended play lounge?

Fred Hill Jr

Frank Zappa is one of the all-time greats. We've lost a great!
