Thanks for voting in the first round of this episode's poll. Jethro Tull has won the first round, and now we're moving on to round 2. Vote for your preferred album that you'd like me to react to from the list provided below.

I have not included Thick as a Brick because I've already reviewed that album on the YT channel. I've heard some music from Aqualung and Songs from the Wood previously and no music from A Passion Play, Mistrel in the Gallery, or Stand Up. Each of the choices suggested would be a full album reaction.

Round 2 will be active through Friday the 14th. I'll plan on recording the upcoming episode this weekend.

Happy voting!

I personally don't know any Tull outside of aqualung and thick as a brick. Love those records but struggled where to go from there. I tried passion play and it certainly wasn't like either of those albums.

Nickie Kelly

Songs From the Wood my favourite, such a great blend of styles. Minstrel would be next, for me, anyway, although I love JT across the board.

Matthew A Aper

Hopefully next time around Heavy Horses will be a choice. Love that record

Steve MacArthur

To be honest, if War Child had been in the mix, I'd have likely picked that - while it's probably their most "pop" album (no crime there, but it is what it is), David Palmer's orchestrations really open up the palate for some interesting journeys. As a secondary thought, "By Kind Permission Of" from Living In The Past would be interesting to see the Doug-meister's reaction - while it's (more or less) a solo piece, there's a lot of fun stuff going on...

BRIAN MILLER

Jethro Tull was my favorite band for a while when I was a teenager, and I've listened to all of the albums multiple times over the years. They are all enjoyable listens, but I usually list Minstrel in the Gallery as one of my Top 5 albums of all time by any band.

David Crossen

It's a shame that A Passion Play (APP) is so underrated. I suppose Aqualung is a classic album, but not as cohesive as APP.

Brian Ashton

Thanks Murdock! I think I like the more folkier side of Tull. I've heard all the blues rock I'd want to hear, but I like the more atmospheric and moody approach to folk music like what Genesis and Tull dabbled in. Not sure if I'm describing that right, but that's what I get out of it, the atmosphere and the mood. Like sitting in the woods on a full moon staring into space.

Trent Curtis

Passion Play! It would be interesting for you to hear it, after having heard Thick as a Brick. The comparisons/contrasts would be fun.

Brian Ashton

Looks like we can change our votes. Let's get something in we and Doug haven't heard to death!

Richard Rathbun

Out of these, had to vote for SFTW. I love Minstrel among this list, and Passion Play is so different from everything that it too would have been a good journey for Doug. But I think among these, SFTW is the most musically interesting. Plus I want to see Aqualung out-voted not because I hate it -- quite the opposite -- but for this channel there are better options, IMO.

Alan Gillespie

Stand Up for me. Doesn't look like it'll win, but it's the only one on the list I haven't heard (yet).

Randy Hammill

I’m voting Minstrel in the Gallery because I think it’s an

Joseph Riordan

Aqualung, really? Come on! Let's go a little deeper into their catalogue than that.

Randy Hammill

often overlooked gem and Ian’s best vocal performance. However, even though I wouldn’t consider it their absolute best, Aqualung is a must and is truly the first of the critical run of Ian and the band in top form. I’m particularly interested in Doug’s reaction to the lyrics on this one. Of course it’s hard to pick the “best” album for a band who had a run of several near-perfect albums.

Bryan Sheehan

I went for APP, which seems low on the list at the moment. There's 3 different lineups listed, all great in my opinion, but I've always gravitated towards the Anderson/Barre/Evans/Hammond (or Glascock)/Barlow era. Better production sounds for starters, and I think JT were definitely in their prime around the mid-70s.

Martin Broten

Had to vote for "A Passion Play". "Songs..." would be good too. Don't know why, but I never really connected with "Aqualung".

Richard Moore

Aqualung is a fine album, but I rank it last in this set because it's so familiar. Stand Up and Songs from the Wood are tied for 3rd in my ranking. Not bad choices, but we can do even better. Minstrel in the Gallery is near-perfect, but a less ambitious album than my top choice. Doug, A Passion Play is Tull's proggiest work. I'd love for this one to get selected because: It's very complex and full of surprises, so would benefit the most from an in-depth analysis; the lyrics are full of fun word play and deep allegory; and I think that this is one you will enjoy a lot and could become your new favorite :-)

Matbeard420

Had to pick sftw. A super solid cover to cover album. Every track is a hit. My favorite Tull.

Great Scott

I would have gone for War Child had it been a choice, but going for SFTW this time. I love Aqualung (esp. Locomotive Breath), but think one of the others would be better for the next analysis. If we could only get some to change their votes for this new #2 choice...

Jason Stockwell

for an "extended play", Passion Play is most appropriate because it was designed as a single song. Aqualung is not actually a concept album and the songs don't flow as well.

Glenn Matteson

Any of these would be a fine choice, but for me Stand Up has long been a favorite. It's only their 2nd album and their style was still evolving but it was fairly clear they were headed for prog greatness. Another time perhaps.

Dale S Josephs

There's some good material on Aqualung, but Minstrel or Songs hold together as albums better (I voted for SFTW)

Itsfun2listen

A passion play is one of the Steve Wilson’s better mixes and lays the ground for the many of the albums which followed. Artistically it’s where Tull came of age

Michel Paré

oups ministrel in the gallery…

Paul Mouradjian

A Passion Play would be superior Extended Play offering. Minstrel would be my close second. Songs from Stand Up & AquaLung would be great for a regular Daily Doug reaction. Idea: How 'bout a Jethro Tull 3 banger week? Monday is Metal Wednesday is Weird Music day Teus. Wed. & Friday is Tull day ....Thursday is open.

Robert W Rucker

I agree with Jason above that Passion Play is the one of these that pretty much HAS to be an extended play. So that's my vote, although it's ok if Aqualung wins; some folks are complaining that it's overplayed, but I'm guessing that it's not overplayed for Doug.

Paul Mouradjian

A bit sad that the 3 best offerings PP, MiG, & SUp are sadly behind in the polls. Ugh. Hope this changes. AqLg, & Sngs frm Wd are great albums too. But ........ They got there from the other albums.... There is a development process with Tull's writing and sound. It would be great with Till to have a linear projection in reactions. Just my $0.02

Blinky

A shame that Aqualung is winning, not because it's a bad album, but because I think the songs on it stand alone as excellent pieces in isolation, whereas albums like Songs from the Wood and Passion Play flow as complete whole experiences better.

Scot Poland

Songs and Minstrel I think have the most to offer from Doug’s perspective. I chose Minstrel because it will be entirely new to him.

Andrew Wingham

Aqualung is the obvious choice. Songs From The Wood is heartfelt

Rick Morse

Ian Anderson is on record that "Songs From the Wood" was their best album musically. In terms of what Dr. Doug has to analyze, this would be the most intriguing.

Einaras Sipavičius

I'm a fan of energetic Jethro Tull sound in A Passion Play and Minstrel In The Gallery. Those are probably my two favourite JT albums. It's a shame they won't win, because I agree with some people, Aqualung is overplayed and it is not necessary to listen to that album in one listen. Aqualung works as well by listening separate songs. And talking about Songs From The Wood, I haven't listened to that album that much so maybe I don't mind if Songs will win. Then the new episode will force me to remember that album.

Eusebio R-Z

I agree that Songs from the Wood may be more interesting musically but, once you add the lyrics Aqualung will probably be more fun to watch

Rand Kelly

The problem with polls is they utilize democracy and the problem with democracy is if the majority are wrong they are useless. Aqualung is winning but it’s a Rock album not a Prog album.

Rand Kelly

pt.2: if you want complex Prog JT you don’t want Aqualung trust us. A Passion Play,Minstrel In The Gallery,Songs From The Wood are the truly adventurous albums here. Please go with the runner up this time.

Aaron West

I think it’s fine to not do a prog album for once. The second place finisher was Led Zep. This is Aqualung’s 50th anniversary and it’s an important album. Worth a reaction imo.

Ray Sincere

Aqualung's probably going to win. I think Aqualung would make more sense to do on the YouTube channel, myself. But you can do it here. Remember: Get Steven Wilson's remix, because it's splendid! Very faithful to the original. But a BIG, BIG improvement in the sound. Original mix: dull and muffled. Remix: clean and clear.

Jim Reeves

I voted for Songs From the Wood for the reasons noted above. I love Aqualung and all JT albums of course. I'd love to hear a review of Broadsword and the Beast too. "By the way, which one's Jethro?" LOL

Edward Wright

Aqualung was not only interesting musically, it was their biggest commercial success. What gave it such broad appeal? I would love Doug's take.

Wakelyn

As much as I love (and even prefer) Aqualung and Songs from the Wood, I really hope A Passion Play comes out on top, as it's the most musically challenging of their albums, so I feel like Doug would have more to say about it.

Ryan Kirch

100% agree, George. I think even Crest of a Knave is interesting in that way. Jethro Tull (or Ian, if you will) is at its best when they turn the corner to something new. In any case, Doug, if you do A Passion Play, please react to the 2014 Extended Performance Stereo Remix by Steven Wilson. It's really that much better. So many nuances pulled from the masters, you wouldn't believe it.

Itsfun2listen

Shame to see we not are taking the opportunity to look at an extended masterpiece like Passion Play, would also be great to see Doug’s response to “the hare that lost its spectacles” 😂

doughelvering

Hey y'all...rest assured this won't be the last JT Extended Play. If your album doesn't win this time, please be patient! I appreciate the passion for this band. I've reached out to the band's US publicist with an interview request. I'm hoping to score something for the upcoming album.

Bryan Sheehan

I have no doubt Doug will check out more of JT. He's obviously a fan, and we won't let him forget, right everyone? lol

Itsfun2listen

Guess they will be keen, new album out end of month

Alex Libia

A Passion Play is going to blow Doug's mind
