This one is a 'semi' Doug's choice. I'm due for one...where I elevate a selection from the list because of personal interest. This time, I'm stumped.

The Neal Morse Band (The Similitude of a Dream) has come in 2nd place in the last two polls. And, I'm interested in hearing this album.

But, I'm attending the Transatlantic concert on Saturday the 16th, where they'll be playing their latest album, The Absolute Universe. So, I leave it to y'all to decide. Once I do one of these, I likely won't get back around to music in this series by Neal Morse for a few months. And, I should say that, if NMB wins, I'll likely still listen to the Transatlantic album before the concert. Vote for the one you'd rather see in the video.

The poll will run through Tuesday, April 12. Happy voting!

The absolute Universe is kinda meh. Similitude is a masterpiece. Easy pick this time.

TSOAD it’s the best NMB album. TAU isn’t even ranking third in TA discography

Matt Hardman

Shoot this is tough for me. Similitude is absolutely the better album but I feel like Doug needs to hear TA before seeing them. Hmmm. I might have to abstain…

Shawn Painter

Yes please! Looking forward to TSOAD and Doug's insightful analysis.

Garance A Drosehn

TSoaD is the better album, IMO. And if Doug is going to the Transatlantic show, then he'll want to sit back and enjoy their new album "as a fan" instead of being in analysis mode.

Gary Thobaben

If the TA choice were the Bridge Across Forever record… oof that’d be hard.

David Michael

TSOAD would normally be my top choice but I have to think that you’ll be TA play the TAU like you said. TAU is so much to digest that you should at least hear it beforehand. IMO you should go with the version that they’ll be playing which is actually the arrangement that Mike Portnoy put together for the blu ray DVD. It’s called the Ultimate Edition. It combines the other two versions together. There is a YT vid for the Ultimate Edition version with some good graphics. I recommend that one! It even has time stamps to break up the sections! https://youtu.be/N5tOLPWdI8s

David Michael

TSOAD is perhaps Neal’s greatest collaborative masterpiece which says a lot right there! If you do end up doing TSOAD, there used to be a YT vid that incorporated all of the music videos and lyric videos into one package but I can’t find that anymore. This version seems like the best thing now but I would only use the audio and not really look at the video for it. It does have time stamps though which is good. https://youtu.be/va6Z92NeMFE Interesting note: Mike Portnoy put a play through of the entire album where you can see and hear him react to the different parts and talk more about the behind the scenes of what was happening. I enjoyed this too. https://youtu.be/kRNTUj7PN7E

Joakim Skurk

Definetely NMB. To me the question mark("?") Album is his best, tho. The latest TA album is their weakest. Of albums Neal Morse is a part of it wouldn't even make top 25 IMO. Sorry TA. 😅

Bjørn Olav Bjørgum

TSOAD is a masterpiece. I’m almost sad it got made, because everything that comes after is a disappointment. I highly recommend watching the documentary on the making of the album.

Patholas

I agree with most of the comments above.... I'd like Doug to have digested TAU before the gig, but I'm more interested to hear what he thinks of TSOAD... Maybe he can listen to TAU (Ultimate Edition) _by himself_ just for enjoyment for once? (Then give us a reaction to the concert? ;-) )

“It's a lot like playing the violin You cannot start off and be Yehudi Menuhin. So Amateur hour goes on and on”

Gustavo G. Firmino

Doug, you’re picking the wrong Transatlantic songs… best one to start with: All Of The Above Find a good quality luve version, you won’t regret 👍🏻

Anthony Taylor

Of these two choices, Similitude Of A Dream by a wide margin, absolute masterpiece (as long as it's the studio version). Of Neal Morse's catalog, Sola Scriptura would be a Daily Doug classic. Looking forward to it!

This is an easy choice. You take Transatlantic right out of the running. I know it’s opposite of what everyone is saying here, but whether it’s 40 years of listening to their music or a new album, I starve myself of a bands music before a gig. Preferably for about a month before the gig. This is to make the live performance as fresh as possible and not just another time hearing it. The Doctor needs to go to the show and just enjoy it. They are all first rate musicians, so anything they play live will be first rate. Being surprised by hearing new music live is not a bad thing. Actually, exciting in my opinion. So, Neal Morse Band gets my vote!

Fred Beaulieu

While I enjoy both of these albums, I think that TSOAD edges out TAU. It is a bit more concise and varied. And it tells a great story.

Arpeggio Blues

I'll just have to say.. Do them BOTH.. two shots of Neal Morse, cannot be bad for anyone.. ;) right?

David Crossen

Don't like either, so not voting this time.

BRIAN MILLER

I'm not familiar with either band yet, so don't have a preference.

Illume Eltanin

I don't know either album, so I'm approaching this differently. I understand the sentiment of attending an album performance with fresh ears, and hearing new to me music for the first time. However, I have two questions for Dr. Doug. First, will the set list be exactly the same as what you would react to, so hearing the album after seeing the show be a duplicate? If not, then I see no real difference than doing the reverse, i.e., listening to the album first and then reacting to a live performance. As long as eventually you do get to an analysis of it for us. Second, can you listen to new to you music without going in to music critique mode? Will you be able to sit back and enjoy the show without analyzing what you hear? These answers may influence my vote.

Michael Strawn

Similitude of a Dream is among my top five albums of the 21t century so this is a no brainer. The new Transatlantic is pretty disappointing in comparison.

Eirik Morken

Yes! Finally some NMB! Maybe you will notice in your read in, but NMB's story is kinda cool. The guitarist and the keyboard player sent in videos of themself on a audition, and got picked. Videos are on YouTube. Guess you know the album is based on the book The Pilgrim's Progress. So yes, it's got christian content. Personally I'm not a "practising christian", allthough I share many values with many religions, but I have no problem listening to Neals lyrics. I loved your breakdown on The Whirlwind, and can really relate to it. Many of Neal's lyrics can be interpreted in several ways, both spiritually and religiously. Hope you and your patreons listen to it with an open heart, independent of personal beliefs. Sorry for any wrong use of words of weird sentences, I'm from Norway. 😉

Barbara Hughes

Voting for NMB. I’m not familiar with either of these artists, but the opinions and/or logic presented by Doug and all those commenting above lead me to that conclusion. I know Doug will create some great listening for us no matter what!

Wade Markham

I'd like to see Doug react to Neal's solo albums. For example, Testimony or Question Mark, or Sola Scriptura.

John Gamesby

Only two bands to choose from and never heard of either. You tubed them and they see to sound like two or three other bands, nothing new. I will not be voting this time round.

grnmntl

Ok after your pick, please consider King Crimson's

grnmntl

Discipline

grnmntl

sorry for stutter

John Gamesby

Or Crimso's Cirkus, including Entry of the Chameleons.

Tom Brophy

I've never heard Neal Morse so I'll be curious. I would also like to throw in the ring for the future. Peter Gabriel's, Passion. The score for Last Temptation of Christ.

Marcos de Brum Lopes

As much as I love Transatlantic, this not the right album to start with. Voted for TNMB

Justin Humberger

For those of you who have avoided Neal's material or this album because you're not a fan of the Christian and gospel elements of his other material, this message is for you... This album isn't really very gospel or preachy at all. It's more about a spiritual journey of a person, which many bands have done albums just like this regardless of their religious backgrounds. The situations the character finds himself in in this album is something that *everyone* in life can relate to, this is not a Christian themed album as many may believe at face value. But it is, rather, a spiritual journey. You'd be doing yourself justice to give this album a fair shot if that was your prior reasoning.

Paul

Similitude of a Dream is one of my favourite albums. I can't wait to hear your reaction.

Bikonito

I'm so excited to hear what you have to say about Similitude, it's a masterpiece.

Clay Walnum

I don’t think that The Absolute Universe is up to par with Transatlantic’s previous stuff. Similitude of a Dream is way better.
