A note for the community...

Here's a short note on current events and how we will attempt to manage heightened emotions around local and world events. Much love, y'all.

Totally agree, Doug. We are all different people with different viewpoints on many different topics, but we are united on this channel by a shared love and appreciation of music. The Golden Rule is in play at all times. Stay safe everyone.

Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)

One of the most magical aspects of music is how it brings people together unconditionally. Sharing a common love regardless of anything else about us. We, as a community and as a larger society, need to look to the example that music provides for us and realise that we can come together in mutual respect and love. It doesn't make hard issues go away. Hopefully, it makes us hold on to our commonality in spite of hard issues. We've been conditioned for years to abandon that commonality. Communities like this can serve to help us rediscover it.

Juergen Larys

All I can say is: You are just great, Doug, including the way you handle this. Looking at your face I think: The guy needs a vacation. And then I realize: The guy IS ON VACATION. Crazy world, crazy times... Looking forward to composition class with you! Best wishes from Germany, Juergen

Anthony Taylor

Thanks Doug, we are certainly in this together. From my limited time spent on your various outlets, especially your YouTube platform, we have maintained maturity with regard and respect for all individual's tastes in music. You've done a great job with your content, looking forward to more of that. Cheers!

Frank Katzenberger

What's more important than politics is respect and respectfully work through it. Respectfully working through it isn't trying to convince the other that your opinion is better and right. It's about sharing perspective and then dropping it. This is wisdom and opinion that everyone can learn from and something you can help others foster. It's what Christians should have been doing all along, but failed to do. As a result, they have captivated division and not being there for hurt people unless they were like minded. It was bad pastoral leadership. Your platform is on its way to helping those who are different learn to respect others via music. Taking a public stance should never be the first option for anyone on the internet. Wisdom first.

David Marshall

Yours is no disgrace. Many thanks for your courage and forthrightness.

Tom Brophy

Thank you Doug. Yours is a safe space where ideas can flow and when I can interact I do. This is a very difficult time and we are all trying to navigate these rough waters the best we can. May we continue to do it with civility. I welcome more political discourse.

Brian Brylow

Thanks for putting this so eloquently Doug. There are a lot of difficult situations that are occurring in the world and every day seems to bring us a new one but the most important thing that we can do here is to be a community that is bonded together for a common purpose of sharing the love of music and the company and enjoyment of each other. I would suggest that there are many platforms out there like Facebook and Twitter that are grievously littered with the controversies of the day and most of that is not a healthy read. I believe that this community is bonded together for an entirely different purpose. Thanks again for putting this message out.

Illume Eltanin

Dr. Doug, I know policy is to not share the Vimeo links. Is an exception allowed in this case? I'm on a few other Discords, and I know of another creator who is considering starting up a Discord. I would love to share this with others to see a well thought out policy regarding these situations on public platforms.

Make Latvanen

Doug, your words showed dignity, compassion, honesty and courage. The world needs folks like you, desperately. Huge respect from Northern Europe. Thank you.

Marc La Porte

It's your channel, so do what you want to do. I for one am here for the music only and your professional opinion on it as a composer, and certainly will not ever be watching any politically oriented videos you post. No disrespect here, but I am just not at all interested in your personal opinion on political matters.

EphesiansSix

Well said, Doug. I'm someone who really doesn't like to talk about what's going on in the world on social media. As a matter of fact, I'm off all of it and have been for over 3 years. Patreon/Discord is the closest I have come to that within that time. As your fellow member and friend, I would like to ask that everyone here respects the fact that I don't prefer to discuss hot topics and world events on social media or pretty much ever, period. While I empathize/pray for those who are hurting and angry and sad, I personally don't wanna discuss it. That doesn't mean I have no love for you guys. It's just my boundaries and the way I feel. So if I don't respond to something it doesn't mean I don't care. I just don't want to discuss things like that. That's not why I'm here. On that note, I'm all for everything you said Doug. I'm glad that this community can be a safe and non-hostile environment for people who want to vent emotionally. Props to that, and to keeping it a loving, strong and musical environment. Much love.

Steve Ben-Shalom

as a nihilist atheist who believes that music is the only religion that delivers, your low key approach is refreshing to someone who is inundated daily with the overbearing swing to the right this country has taken. Thank you

Thom P

The community and "safe space" you have created and nurture here is priceless. Everybody has their own baggage and the added weight of what is happening in this country, and around the world, have some of us at their tipping point. But... music has always been my sanity. It is why I am a musician and why I spend as much free time as possible in my studio. Your You Tube channel, Patreon, and Discord, and what has grown from it, could not have come at a better time. YOU could not have come at a better time. Thank you for all you do. I don't know if you realize how far your reach extends, but it has touched me. Much love.

Peter Tutak

Well stated. I also am here only for the music, and like Ephesians Six, I avoid online discussions on religion and politics. It's just not my thing. So long as any such discussions are parked in areas/threads where I can easily drive around them, and are not interwoven into the existing threads on music, I will continue to be a happy, musically engaged, and supportive member of this community.

Sid Levy

Music unites us all. It speaks to love, sadness, frustration, fantasy and a host of every emotion that is the human experience. I subscribe to your channel because you are our tour director and guide on our shared experience. In the time we spend with you, we break the shackles of day-to-day living and return to the music. Some people just witness the music and others like us study it and dive head first into it. Yes, the world is spinning out of control as it always does. Its ok to speak about it since it has an impact on us if we are paying attention. But in those brief moments of pause, let us gather together to enjoy the song, tune, movement, or whatever.

Jeff Koke

Doug, this is your space. Say what you think and alienate people. If you lose some subscribers, fuck em. I don't know what your political views are, but I love your commentary, both musical and not. Be true to yourself.

Mark J Moerman

Very well said; thank you. It's a tough situation, and I fully agree with your approach.

MrWondrous David Beckwith

Your thoughtful comments, together with the thoughtful comments from fans just reinforce what you said about this being a valuable, insightful, intelligent community. Don't let the hinterlands get you down. You'll be back in civilization soon. I can relate. I live in Charlotte, which is a thoughtful oasis in a sea of slack. In discussions, I feel sure people will raise the quality of argument, rather than amplitude of voice or vituperation. Points can be made, or remembered, simply in song. What if they played "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" along troublesome borders? Might not some hearts be melted, and positions softened? Rather than argue in words, you might challenge folks to "argue" in song. "On the Turning Away" vs I dunno "Material Girl"? The younger generations need to know about Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young and so on...but many have no clue. Have groupmind gather all the great protest songs and artists. It might inspire a new generation! Drive safely, my man, and take your time. East Coast drivers! Check in when ya get there!

Joseph Riordan

Thanks for this post Doug. I have always viewed your posts as a respite from so much internet noise. You play and give feedback about much music that I have always loved but hasn't gotten much acknowledgment. I love your willingness to learn about music and artists that you know little or nothing about. Do I agree with all your listening choices? Of course not, but, your feedback is always interesting and respectful. These are perilous times for our country but we have been here before. If I may make a suggestion, there is a woman named Heather Cox Richardson who puts out an almost daily news letter called "Letters From An American". She is a brilliant historian and great writer. She dissects current events with a historical perspective that is refreshing and hopeful. If you don't know of her you may want to check her out. In the meantime, Happy fourth for all of us crazy Americans. Let us remember we are one people and let's try to come together to solve our many problems. We can do this.

Stephen Martin

I left social media years ago, because I couldn't post anything expressing my point of view without someone from the other side of the aisle telling me why I am wrong. I even had someone insist that I remove a post. So I am thankful for the respectful atmosphere here. I feel I can safely dip my toe in the Discord every once in awhile.

Morten Bay

I am in total awe of your restraint and your ability to be diplomatic and respectful in the face of deeply divisive news. You have shown these traits and abilities before, and this video is another example. I couldn't do it. But I wish I could. Thanks for being a role model.

Zsuzsanna Vázsonyi

Doug, thank you so much for this video! It was like hearing my own thoughts. Due to the big time difference (I'm in Hungary) and my crazy work schedule I can hardly join any live conversations, but I'm glad I'm a member of this community. 😊

Adam Miles

Thanks for these comments, Doug. I don't know that I could show the same restraint and compassion. That's a lie; I know I couldn't. But I am glad we have someone like you to chart a path of decency and dignity during these incredibly fraught times. And remember what Roger Waters said when someone told him that they've been listening to his music for 30 years but they don't like his new stuff because it's too political: "You've been listening for 30 years? You haven't been listening very f***ing closely!"

Frank D

I'd hope and expect that everyone on Doug's channel are respectful of the fact that this is the man's business - it's his income. So while I'm sure Doug welcomes robust conversation, we need to remember that we are essentially members of a club, and clubs have rules to protect the owner and the members. There are plenty of other avenues to vent your spleen in a way that wouldn't be acceptable here. This is a fantastic resource and in general I see only informative and interesting comment. I hope it can stay that way while the world goes through a very strange period. Treating others as we'd wish to be treated ourselves is a good starting point in my opinion.

Artemisty

It is very difficult when family disagree with you.

Pam Norris

Doug I appreciate your message very much and that this community is inclusive of everyone. Our commonality in our love of music and the arts is what binds is together. I would caution you to not bring politics onto your wider YouTube channel though as it is your livelihood and growing nicely. We are all so supportive of you and you have a safe space to share your views as well but the wider audience may not be the place to vent. It may just be disheartening to you and get you off focus.

Arpeggio Blues

It was exactly what I needed to hear. So many of my friends have divorced themselves from politics, and some refuse to even bother to vote; it seems that more and more and dropping out.. I am worried, very worried.. sigh.. "Oh, Canada" I have no more trust for the SCOTUS.. :(( very sad.

Gerard Dion

Thank you for that statement Doug. Viewpoints on this volatile issue run across a very wide spectrum indeed. I have personally struggled with this issue ethically over these many years and have strong opinions that I choose not to share at this moment. Having said that, I’d like to think that I’m open to honest, intelligent, and respectful discourse on the issue and sincerely hope others are willing to do the same. Carry on, Doug with your fine work. Cheers!

Patrick Aris

The reason this is a great community is because we are all united by a love for music. Bringing in politics risks fracturing that unity. There are plenty of spaces on the internet to speak out about current events, and a big reason why I value the Daily Doug is because it is not one of those spaces. I hope I can continue to support this space, but it's disheartening to see even the tiniest bit of current political controversy leaking into this community, no matter how diplomatic it may be. Ultimately you should do what you feel is right, but I hope in this community we can continue to focus on what unites us.

Peter Cocoros

Well said Doug. One of the reasons I've chosen to support you on Patreon is because of your thoughtful, well spoken commentaries on the artistic message behind the music your analyzing, and how that relates to your personal convictions. You do that in a manner that's incredibly well thought out, humble, and eloquent, at least from my perspective. I know of few who use their public platform to share their views as respectfully as you do while at the same time not compromising on your beliefs. It's unfortunate you've had to block people, but I think your approach will ultimately be accepted by this open minded and respectful community

Yes You Can Play Guitar Reaction Community!

In this crazy world I always say at least we still have music.... it's tough keeping everyone happy but the fastest way to ruin something good is to get into arguments and debates about devisive topics. I hear you Doug and I'm with you. :)

Bikonito

Eh, personally I don't care if I hurt a fascist's feelings.

William Drum Marcus

Good for you, if you remember when the Nazi party came into power, people there said they came for my neighbors I said nothing, they came for my friends I said nothing, then they came for me.
