I'm gonna put this out there for everyone: I was watching the 1998 version when I came up with the idea. I've never watched the 2019 version and I never plan to. Also, I'm happy that one of my suggestions was finally picked. So that's a plus.

It's because the adaptation rights literally forbid the use of animation, they had to thread as close to the live action as possible. T.S. Eliot hated the idea of a Disney film based on his books, so he only allowed adaptation rights to be sold if it wasn't animation, and that rule holds to this day.

I used to love that movie… now that I’m in my 40’s I’ve been going on a bit of a nostalgia trip and buying DVD’s of some of my old favourites… but I haven’t been able to find a copy of Cats Don’t Dance in region 2… at a price I would be willing to pay…
