I think that greatly depends on the quality of the steel. My guess, rinsed in clean water dried and then c II aged in a thin mineral oil, it should.be fine...

While i love the katana, most japanize warriors would have carried a Yumi (longbow) or a naginata (polearm similar to a glaive) and even the legendary samurai turned in their swords once Portuguese muskets came into circulation in the 16th century. he doesn't seem to have traditional samurai armor (which normally was very heavy and expensive, being made of lots of interlocking plates (typically clay)) which makes me think he would be on the lower end of the military caste, perhaps as an ashigaru (peasant soldier or militia). I might be a nerd...

it could also be that he just ditched his armor in favor of actually surviving, but most armor was so prohibitively expensive it could have brought dishonor to his name to abandon it

Japanese steel had an extremely high carbon content, which made it very hard, and very easy to rust. Sword etiquette demanded turning your head away from the blade when looking at it. Even the moisture in a breath would start it rusting. If you respected your blades, and the sword smith who made them, you cleaned and oiled them at least once a day. He looks like a samurai in everyday “civvies”. Unless heading to combat, his armor and katana would be carefully stored away. A wakizashi was his EDC sword.

I like traditionalist! Blade care has become a lost art. When I grew up and adult never left the home without a good utility pocket knife on them, and usually knew how to clean and sharpen it!

I also came up with a name for the Japanese man who was washed up. His name is Reiji Norikano. As for the keidran duo, I thought of naming the wolf keidran, Karu, and the Tigress keidran, Mura. Hope you guys like those names!

I would most certainly be down for a few followup sketches (or at least a color version at minimum, which given the response is a shoe-in). I love the premise setup, and the character designs (have to agree though, the wolf especially)

A watery clay “paint” was used as part of the differential heat treatment process. It kept parts of the steel cooler, which kept it softer and springier. Only the tiniest part of the cutting edge needed to be crystal hard, with the rest being stronger and tougher to handle the shock. An artistic smith “paints” patterns on the blade with the clay. After final polishing, the difference in hardening showed up as shiny and “frosty” areas. In addition to being crucial to the design of the sword, it was a chance for the smith to show off his artistic skills.

I wonder if the plot of this side-story would be similar to Nagasarete Airantou... Guy gets washed ashore on an island inhabited only by women, but there's a fair bit of supernatural stuff going on in the background to keep this sort of problem going.

I believe kimonos are different from what he's wearing. They're more like robes than full-body clothing and normally are worn in the same manner as a western Tuxedo would be worn.
