Actually, this is perfectly acceptable. It's called "Core Rope Memory", which is more or less knitting but with cabling to create ROM code. It's very, very old tech, but NASA actually used it for Mars and Apollo missions in the 60's. I've actually heard that they had to actually hire old women to knit the cabling properly since it was a bloody hard job to do (and very inefficient by today's standards), but it's a nice anecdote to know.
