How Rose and Trace met, suggested by GreyWolf! Saria probably should have mentioned she lived with a Keidran.

LORE!!!!

Twokinds fan

So glad trace is good now right

Mx KaNeko

Did Saria love Trace AND Rose in a romantic sense?

RemyHindle

Poor Roselyn, even their first encounter wasn't a good one

SophieTRat-Skunk

Well, all we know of Rose and (old) Trace is that he was intrigued by the colour’ of her magic and that he then carried out experiments on her…

SophieTRat-Skunk

Nice to see the Twokinds sketches back on my Patreon wall… did anyone else lose them for a while earlier?

Ordithus

Not a great first impression. Poor Rosey

bowman502

I own a short sword for home defence, just as the founders intended.

TheLoreMaker

Probably would have been wise considering who Trace is/was.

Caleb

Her expression adds more than just 1,000 words to this picture 😆.

Muninn_Crow

Nope. Saria and Rose were just best friends. It's been mentioned in the comic what good friends they were. Basically a roommate here. :P

Patrick Horton

I feel sorry for Rose throughout this whole comic. She been through some insanity since teenage years.

Jaugernaut _1319

I’ll have to go reread, I don’t remember that.

Noxitious

Such a vibrant woman, now just a greyscale figure at the end of a long lost madman's strings...

Darwinskeeper

I'm not quite certain of the depth of Saria's love for Rose. I know that the two were extremely close, and some of the Sunday strips suggest that their relationship may have had romantic and possibly sexual overtones. Still, from what I have seen from the main strip Rose and Saria were just extremely close friends.

Anonymous1988

Trace: "...so, you freed her from imprisonment and almost-certain execution, and offered her a place to stay?" Saria: "That's about the gist of it, yes." Trace: "And she's in the bed because...?" Saria: "Well, were you expecting her to sleep on a mat on the floor?" Trace: "I mean, now that you mention it--" Saria: "TRACE!!!"

Darwinskeeper

Rose's backstory, as far as the strip is concerned is pretty long and involved, but I'll try to provide a condensed version. Rose is the sister of Eucre, a white wolf who was gifted at magic and was able to flawlessly transform into a human. Eucre used this skill to secretly study magic at the Templar Institute and had an affair with Mary Silverlock, the dean of the Institute. Raine Silverlock Is Eucre's and Mary's daughter. Rose made the mistake of trying to spy on Eucre, was caught by the Templars, and was nearly executed. She was somehow rescued by an armorsmith named Saria au Gruhen, became her servant and very close friend. Saria eventually fell in love with Trace Legacy, a very ambitious young Templar. Trace, like most Templars, had a very dim view of Keidran and this became a point of contention between him and Saria. When Trace and Saria married, Rose joined their new household, and remained close with Saria, Trace loved Saria enough to be friendly with Rose and apparently taught her some magic. After Saria was killed by a wolf, Rose grieved but remained at the Legacy Estate. She was anxious to see Saria again and agreed to become part of Trace's plan to bring back Saria by binding her soul to a local innkeeper, Maren Taverndatter. Eventually Rose died and allowed Trace to use magic to bind her soul to the estate. Eventually Trace and Rose, with some help from Saria stopped the transformation of Saria's soul into Maren, and Rose's soul is beginning to separate from the manor and will eventually spend eternity with her friend Saria. At least that's my interpretation of recent events.

RivCA

I never did, no. But then again, I also get email updates when Patreon creators that I track have updates.

wjd1206

The old Trace... but love will out! Even the old Trace begrudgingly accepts his wife's friend!

Jaugernaut _1319

You just saved me hours of reading, thank you friend.

wjd1206

I think Rose is the best secondary character in the entire story line! Just like anyone you care about, I hate the thought of her 'crossing the veil' into eternity, but knowing how much she loved and missed her best friend Saria, I would feel terrible if she didn't get to be with her. Beyond that, I think she's somewhat torn herself over Trace and Flora. Wanting to protect them and their child.

AetherSprite224

This picture is making me suddenly think of the scene from Django where Stephen reacts to the idea of Django staying in the manor...

Vicroc4

Considering the path he took after Saria's death, his reaction here makes an alarming amount of sense, unfortunately. There had to be a bit of a bigot in him already for him to go off the deep end like that. I suspect that even pre-Saria's death Trace would be horrified at what he's become.

Netari Icefyng

So Rose was Saria's friend is this something akin to a life debt like Chewbacca to han solo? Gotta say it's kinda odd seeing Rose in traditional Keidran garb outside of the dragon mask comic....and flash backs, i wonder if we'll ever see Raine in Keidram form in traditional Keidran Garb

Iago24

Well, at least he didn't surprise them in the same bed...

Iago24

In the comic flashbacks from ages ago, Trace's bigotry was casual. He didn't hate the Keidran or want to make them suffer, but he didn't see anything wrong with keeping them as slaves, either.

Vicroc4

Right, okay, so this makes a lot of sense then. I'd forgotten about that tbh.

Muddypaws

Poor Rose… with only a blanket to maintain her modesty. Hell of a welcome you have there Trace. I’d hate to get you sore at a cocktail party.

Netari Icefyng

Keidran don't wear clothing typically

Drazgon

Thank you for such a great suggestion! Is Trace left-handed?

Drazgon

Now we have to burn sheets! Trace, probably

Iago24

No? That was never the canon, the slave bought by Trace was a completely different Keidran who was only ever seen in one panel. Rose was rescued by Saria before she and Trace had even met and stuck with her ever since.

Glenn Sellers

Sure they do. It's just that we humans call their clothing fur.

Glenn Sellers

As much as I'd like to think that (me being a lefty and all), most likely this is a case where the artist needed to make him look more menacing and, because of where Trace is in the drawing, he had to put the sword in Trace's left hand.

Cameron Park

Actually this WASNT Trace’s first meeting with Rose, as he was there when she was brought to the academy he attended as a student after she was caught trying to find her cousin Euchre! He almost certainly saw her, because he was sent to fetch the head Templar.

Kzitold

I've heard the left side of the robe should always go on top, soo... maybe this whole image is mirrored?

Kai Sörensen

also to the likely situation at the time (Raids IIRC , if not war)

Drazgon

Tom, probably, not wanting to think about such things: "He's an ambidexter."

Drazgon

I like the idea of Trace being able to wield a sword. Ma man isn't just a skinny mage 💪🏻

feralcat52

Since the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only us left-handed people are in our right minds. BTW, Flora may very likely be a lefty, as most felines are left paw dominant.

Silent Thunder

(Short for “If I Remember Correctly”)

Silent Thunder

Technically Rose and Eucre are cousins, not siblings, but close enough.

Fortress120

Someone is about to sleep on the couch or be kicked out of the house

SCD

[Rose pulls out her gun and shoots Trace] Saria: Oh, my god! You just killed him, Rose! Rose: He's a bureaucrat, Saria! I-I don't respect him! Saria: Um... Rose, I think you've said that before. That's out of context here. Rose: NAH!

CrimsonQuill086

Poor Roselyn just could not catch a break, huh? I am guessing this is after the Dragon Masquerade, but I could be wrong. Still, it's clear how Saria may have had a softening effect over time-hopefully he started to see Rose as a companion in time. Still, the expressions here are great!

wayne sampson

All I have to say is.... someone is getting the silent treatment

Tazer Silverscar

I mean, given who Trace was before the memory loss, I'm surprised it didn't play out any worse 🤔

wjd1206

Clothing is fun, it's for fashion and status!

wjd1206

I'd rather a short shotgun. Armslength is far closer than I'd like under those circumstances!

Patrick Horton

To be fair, looking at the sketches of Keidran, they don't seem to mind.

starkiller1286

This was before he corrupted himself but being slightly clueless seems to be a core personality trait.
